Durin III jumping to his certain death made sense to me on an emotional level rather than from a standpoint of strategic prudence. What I saw in his eyes was “I have led us astray, possibly to our doom. I no longer deserve to be king. My son was right all along, and he should be king now.”
I’m a fan of your work, Robert. And, I’m happy to see that you’ve taken a balanced view of this show instead of going the route of many raging troll-critics attempting to standout from the crowd with bombast and anger. The show is what it is- fan fiction trying to weave an entire epoch of the legendarium into 8 relatively short tv episodes with narrative that has consistent characters and storylines season to season. The gripes about lacking dogged adherence to Tolkien’s writing are pointless. They aren’t allowed to include Silmarillion material and have to construct their own narrative with spotty source material from the after-ran books that I don’t think are all that great to begin with. It’s like the braggart that exclaims that “the book is so much deeper than the movie” when of course 100’s of pages of development are deeper than an adapted 100 page screenplay. Season 2 was an improvement and I agree that the Annatar-Celebrimbor segments were the strongest. The Harfoot thing needs to go. It’s weak in a Disney/Lucasfilms vein. The dwarves are fascinating and there’s little source material on them so I’m curious how they develop that plot line. The Numenor development now has enough wheels in motion to roll along through its downfall with pace. I think the writers should develop Lindon further as this is a kingdom, not a backwater. I hope they don’t squander too much time having Gandalf roam the East aimlessly.
I like the Rings of Power in the way that I respect that the Roman pantheon borrowed from the Greek pantheon and the Greek Pantheon borrowed from their predecessors. With all great legends comes nuances in who tells the story. Just because something doesn't align with an original idea doesn't mean that it can't be of any merit with an open mind and an understanding that this is just one individual's artistic interpretation of another realm. Tolkien himself was changing and rearranging and rewriting, drafting and redrafting his own stories. It's just a part of the creative process. Normally I don't voice my point of view on these things publicly but I just wanted to put that out there as somebody who appreciates art for what it is, not everybody has to like somebody's interpretation, but somebody is allowed their artistic expression and creative freedoms stemming from an original inspiration
Also IDG there is a vanity fair article about the ROP finale with the writer Patrick McKay saying that the dark wizard being Saruman is “highly improbable”.
It's not "Saruman" it's the proto saruman before he took that name. So no he's not "saruman" in tv production terms, but he will in the end become saruman
Hi Robert, I have no subscription to watch the episodes, but follow your and some other channels talking about TROP. I was wondering if the dark wizard is Saruman and is not a nice guy in second era, why would the valar send him again in the third era? And why would Gandalf trust him in that third era?
292 To Joy Hill, Allen & Unwin [Tolkien had been sent details of a proposed ‘sequel’ to The Lord of the Rings that a ‘fan’ was going to write himself.] 76 Sandfield Road, Headington, Oxford 12 December 1966 Dear Miss Hill, I send you the enclosed impertinent contribution to my troubles. I do not know what the legal position is, I suppose that since one cannot claim property in inventing proper names, that there is no legal obstacle to this young ass publishing his sequel, if he could find any publisher, either respectable or disreputable, who would accept such tripe. I have merely informed him that I have forwarded his letter and samples to you. I think that a suitable letter from Allen & Unwin might be more effective than one from me. I once had a similar proposal, couched in the most obsequious terms, from a young woman, and when I replied in the negative, I received a most vituperative letter. With best wishes, Yours sincerely, J. R. R. Tolkien.
Annatar and celebrimbor was the standout, Durin was excellent again. The numenorian story line was poor, not very progressive, and Gandalf and the hobbits story line was very poor and uninteresting. Overall, S2 was soo much better, definitely room for improvement but I’m excited for S3.
I like the idea of prerecorded “live” chat if you are going to do them without preparation. What do I mean by that - your live chats have the magic of spontinuity and your voice sounds much better for me compered with prepared short videos (which I sometimes find almost too reheresed and little bit rushed). So, pls do the “live” chats on the spot without any preaparation and I believe they will be great as these ones I enjoy so much. Thank you. This might seem weird
@@markwareham6031 I really hoped that it would be. But the script, the plot and the dialogue as well as the portrayal of Galadriel (I don’t mind her being an angry warrior) all feel very poorly written and decided upon. Bless the actress for being able to pull off such a character, but any way you slice it, that’s just NOT Galadriel. I wish it was fantastic but it’s just terribly disappointing. I expected so much more especially considering all they put behind it. Can you imagine how incredible the potential was for this series to be an in depth character driven glimpse into the early days of the second age of Tolkien’s incredible world? But instead everything feels like a poorly penned, terribly simple and not thoroughly thought out mockery of what we actually love about Tolkien’s source material.
Around 95% of the complaints and hate that I hear about the show can be summed up as “That’s not what happened in the books!” …which is a silly complaint for many reasons. Tolkien didn’t write his books with movies or TV shows in mind. All adaptations have changes because things that work on the page don’t necessarily work on screen. Do you have any actual complaints about specific things? I think the show has many flaws and things we can complain about, but it’s silly to just say “that’s not what the book said” as though that’s somehow automatically a bad thing in itself.
@@landofalwayswinter666 here's an example: there can NEVER be 2 Durins at once. The creators of this disaster know nothing of Tolkien's work. There's a zillion example with dates, characters who couldn't have known each other, characters not at all the same, "diversity" that make no sense, etc etc etc

I agree, I enjoyed it substantially more than season 1, which I also enjoyed

What about Kemen = Mouth of Sauron?

Now the fun of watching the part I missed😊

Except for some characters and places names that Tolkien actually wrote is there anything canonical at all in this show?
