Many moons ago I bought an E-flite blade cx rtf and learned the expensive way just like you. The simulator came with it which helped with learning how to operate, trim and fly but nothing prepared me for real life wind/turbulent conditions indoor or especially outdoor. After several years and HUNDREDS of broken parts my cx is pretty much done. Im looking into the next step and don't even have a local hobby shop especially a flying club so I'm in the "goin' it alone" group and shopping exclusively online. The selection is overwhelming. Something small/ 200ish that can fly more easily outside. I much prefer RTF. The blade 230s rtf looks ideal but the more I research it the more it looks twitchy and difficult to fly in most of the videos I've seen. "random china brands" have some disposable options but look hard to get parts for especially after a year or so old (I crash a lot) but I have zero issue fixing things. I've been looking at the blade 230s, GOOSKY s2 or the OMP M2 EVO. Leaning mostly towards the OMP. Looks like a quality machine with readily available parts and decent reviews. Totally agree with the Experience Helper who can guide you throughout the hobby. With my first helicopter, I really had a hard time putting it on air due to some factory defects, but thanks to a good friend of mine who is also in the hobby for reconfiguring my K110s.

I started with an MSR and moved up via MSRX, 120SR, 200SRX and 230S. I'm still flying basics and only relatively recently bought a Sim. I don't practice enough. Flying circuits is still hit and miss and "nose in" still scares me! You've made me realise that I need to go back a bit and get some self discipline. Not crashed the 230S yet (I've got a second-hand bought spare one for when I do!) but I've come close a few times! I'm 70 now, having flown mediocre fixed wing for most of my life and helis in my latter years, so I'm not expecting to reach 3D standard before my time is up!
In my day it was a Hirobo Shuttle with a 30 engine, some form of JR radio and if you were lucky, a mechanical gyro. Then the CSM360 piezo gyro came out and that was a total game changer. I still have my heli hanging from the ceiling in the other room but I haven’t flown it in at least 10 years.
I have done both since i started in june 2023. Started with the sim and a micro heli. And joining a club and buddyboxing with a trex 600 from a club member. By now i am allowed to fly by my self, but a teacher must be present until i get my licence. By now learning upside down orientations and having a lot of fun.
I have OMP M 2 Evo. I didn't read anywhere on which channel and how many % I should set. So I personally take it that the rescue mode is that I switch from advanced or expert mode to beginner mode as quickly as possible. And that's what I do... Advice, tips, tricks?
Thanks for the inspiring chat. Doing the self learning route using especially advice from UA-cam tutorials such as yours. Love it and yes broken some stuff on the Nano S3 in the process. Forced to use indoors as it is just too windy. Really wish I could get some calm days for Horizon Cub S2 fixed wing. Had one of those cheap twin rotor helicopters years ago that had an optical connection. Wasn't too good outside. Learn'd that these skills have to be practiced regularly to retain skills.

I started flying remote control helicopters in 2007 or 8. At the time either simulators didn't exist or we're not common enough for people to recommend them. Right now the simulator setup isn't cheap but the cost of repairing helicopters over and over again make simulators seem cheap. Definitely recommend taking that route. It was a very expensive hobby to learn the other way
The best is to get a 127 ready to fly for about 60 bucks. I am amazed at how great these are!! So light it can crash and rarely break. I love to fly it inside my living room. Long fight time. So cheap you can buy 2 and learn and learn.
Thumbs up. More people should care about helicopters for their natural high endurance of flight time. I modified my 230s to become a FPV helicopter at 249 grams and HD onboard video recording that flips and snaps with 35 minutes of flight time per charge. No quads under 250 grams can ever beat that, not even professionally designed DJI. They either have to change a battery and going over 250 grams, or they have to turn off HD video and turn off FPV and navigation and make the drone fly in a circle at constant speed to get 35 minutes per charge, and even then, they can't snap or flip.

what if i wanted to get the Protos 380 EVO V2 and the only reason why is cause i wanted to but a heli i can keep and grow with as i get better and not buy as i get better .what do you think or can i get the trainer for the skids
My dream so far is this goosky s2 & rs4. First heli i go to 4 channel xk 127 to mastering the orientation with gyro hover. But now i dont want to rush go to 6 channel bcause i know im going crash instantly & lot of money for repair. Now im learning & train finger on phoenix simulator even the simulator not realistic like real flight or accurc. First heli i wanna buy goosky s2 & rs4 bcause the parts was cheap. 😊
We call that TAMING the HELI DOWN. OUTSTANDING Info here, especially about the DANGERS. I flew with a gent who SADLY was Killed by a 90 SIZE Heli about 10 years ago. These ARENT toys, regardless of size.
Don't listen to this guy talking about getting a 550 as your second model. He's setting you up to fail big time. Getting something that size should be purely based upon your skill level, not how many models you've previously bought or flown. I would personally recomend you be able to do upright and inverted figure 8s, forward and backwards b4 getting something the 500 size or larger. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for major frustration and a lot of wasted $ from crash cost.
So a simulator 100+ a controller 200 you pay 300 dollars and you not sure you will love it or good with it? Do you have like a free simulator and controller for 50? :)
@@PaulNugent-v1y You can disagree all you want, but proof is in the results. There isn't a single decent 3d heli pilot that hasn't put significant time in on a simulator. If you aren't into 3d, then maybe. But if that's the case then like i said, you won't get that good. Not crashing isn't a badge of honor in this hobby. It just means you aren't pushing yourself. 20 flights are not much...I agree too, you can't become a good 3d pilot without a simulator. Decades ago simulators weren't available but thats the reason why people fly big helicopters too but only scale-like. If you only want to fly scale maybe it work without a simulator but not for starting with acrobatics/3D

Before getting an S2, I definitely recommend getting a Blade Nano and spending a few months with it first.
I would say that my Goosky is more stable with self level off .

You can buy a cheap USB Controller. It's like a remote but only for flying on computer. You can use simulators in demo mode without costs.
Nope - never used a simulator. flew my toy Twister Ninja for a few months then went straight to a goosky S2. So far 20 flights not a single accident.
That's good, but you're simply not going to get very good without practicing on a simulator. You just aren't.
