    This content is about polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), a condition that causes bilateral joint pain, especially in the shoulders. The primary treatment for PMR is prednisone, an anti-inflammatory drug. However, long-term use of prednisone can lead to side effects. Dr. Megan, the Prednisone pharmacist, offers a Prednisone checklist to help manage treatment and reduce risks associated with prednisone use.

    Key Takeaways:
    1. Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a condition that causes bilateral joint pain, especially in the shoulders, and is typically diagnosed in individuals over 50 years old.
    2. The primary treatment for PMR is prednisone, an anti-inflammatory drug that quickly relieves symptoms. However, long-term use of prednisone can lead to side effects such as weight gain, mood swings, and bone loss.
    3. Alternative treatments for PMR include biologic medications like Actemra and Kevzara, which target inflammation in a different way. These medications have shown some effectiveness in achieving remission but also have their own side effects.
    4. It is advised to focus on exercise to counteract the side effects of prednisone and to have regular follow-ups with healthcare providers.
    5. Dr. Megan, the Prednisone pharmacist, offers a Prednisone checklist to help individuals manage their treatment and reduce risks associated with prednisone use. It is important to avoid common mistakes when taking prednisone.

    This was EXCELLENT and very informative. Here's my dilemma;
    One Rheumatologist says I have PMR and wants me to take Hydroxychloroquine (I have weaned off Prednisone and do not want to go back to it). I read the side effects of Hydroxychloroquine and they scare me. Same with Kevzara and every other drug you mentioned.
    The other Rheumatologist (from an unrelated and different doctor's office) says I do not have PMR. He thinks it may be osteoarthritis. CRP and ESR tests are just a little above normal. Both docs said nothing to worry about based on the blood tests as at this time GCA (Giant Cell Arteritis) is not in the picture.
    At this point I am going to try extra strength Tylenol (220 mg) because I am still having aches if I don’t take something. Now I read that Tylenol can also have side effects. Gee ...

    Aloha Doc! PMR is wickedly painful - I've burnt, broken and poked my body in a variety of interesting ways and PMR is a top contender for pain and a close second to eye injury. On 2mg Prednisone and tapering off. Thanks for the excellent info I wish I'd had 3 years ago :)

    God bless you for your information.
    I’m 71. I have had PMR for 10 months. It’s an awful affliction. Started at 15 mg. I’m down to 6mg per day doing slowly 1 mg every three weeks. Now even slower since I have reached 6mg.
    Take your time tapering.
