  • How can we use design to creatively re-imagine our world without single-use plastic? In many cases, it's just a matter of thinking outside of the bottle.
The plastic crisis is out of control, and corporations are trying to distract us with false promises like recycling and ocean clean-ups. But there are much simpler, more creative ways to solve this waste problem - ones we can start with today. The Story of Stuff Project is pleased to present our latest series, Solving Plastic, wherein we spotlight viable, simpler, and efficient solutions that drive us away from plastic and promote real system change.

Just want to correct this here as there seems to be confusion in the comments. Blueland does NOT dehydrate its tablets. They have formulated their product to never have water in them from the jump. Hope this helps!

Michelle, am I incorrect in thinking that you work for Blueland?

Then the problem is not in the comments but about the way the message has been conveyed in the video.

While dehydration can help reduce emissions, it's still an energy intensive process.
We should be advocating for locally produced cleaning supplies instead of shipping stuff like this across the planet.
There are a whole new set of VC backed startups popping up, who aim to help consumers (and employees) feel less helpless about the climate crisis, and make some money doing so. Getting a B Corp Certification also seem to be a consistent theme with such companies.
Blueland (so far) looks like one of these.
But, If Blueland genuinely cares about the environment, they could setup local manufacturing partners, instead of shipping stuff from the US to New Zealand.

I would imagine that the concentrated cleaners can be produced in cake/pill form, rather than dehydrated from a solution.
      +1 for local production.

We have a similar invention in Australia, so don't worry everyone is looking to buy solutions from their own country.

They actually do not dehydrate their products. This is an inaccurate portion of the video so your comment regarding energy in this instance is inaccurate.

Additionally, think of shipping these goods ( small and light) as opposed to larger bulky products weighed down by water and consider how much more efficient that is...

Here is an idea, vinegar and backing soda will clean most kittens and bathrooms. You don't need to buy so many different cleaners that are bad for your health and the environment.

I checked their pricing. They are not "significantly cheaper" than conventional items. 6 hand soap tablets cost $30. I can definitely buy cheaper conventional ones.
Another company which doesn't understand the real solution.

You may have been looking at the wrong product! They actually sell them 5 for $10.

Neat, but I can't help but wonder how well the cleaning products actually work.

I had a terrible experience with the bottles breaking all the time. Not from dropping, just randomly cracking. The bathroom spray resulted in pink mold. Went right back to method cleaners. I wish the products worked, but they don’t.

Yup they don't. We had good expectations from them given all the marketing but unfortunately they couldn't deliver the actual purpose of those cleaners.

The same ONE bottle is being *re-used* 1000s of times, not 1000 bottles being used ONCE. Moron! 🤦🏽‍♂😮‍💨
