It is unbelievable how such soulful, utterly Spanish, and perfect performance can have less than 200,000 views while John Williams's dull, mechanistic one on a guitar that sounds like a banjo has 15 million. Sad how gullible most people are.
Let me take a wild guess: you're not an actual musician? Because I've never met one so disparaging of such an accomplished performer as Williams and so ready to insult listeners based on that sort of preference. Actually, not that it matters, the guitar teachers I had didn't like Yepes. Either way, sounding like an asshole doesn't make you look like an expert.
Oh my, how I have searched for someone who could play this piece with the spirit that Albéniz' intended. The subtle lead in was stunning. The best is so subjective. However, Yepes has removed all debate. I'm buying the album.
I love this piece...I learned it after my six years classical guitar training...I'm watchin on the tube many perfomances and I have to admit that the most impressive is to me Ana Vidovic performance fast but perfect and passionate in each note...Narciso Yepes is a true Maestro and his playing is as good as Williams...if not better...
This song is truly amazing. I would KILL to be able to play that. I'm only In level 5 of the Royal Conservatory Classical Guitar program so it'll be awhile before I get here I think. This is absolutely breathtaking
i have an album with him playing barrios stuff... really I reckon it must have been his fav cause it is really really so good... the interpretation makes the music so expressive its amazing.
Williams is too romantic; and this is often the case when non Spaniards play Spanish music (probably because of some false clichees), in my opinion . Yepes brings the right touch to this music. He has the Spanish temper: not romantic, but sceptical about the world and austere.
Narciso Yepes was brave & experimental with his transcriptions but was not always received well. This describes him well,, Yepes is a faithful product of the hot, dry Andalucian climate, and his playing has little of the refinement that English listeners associate with the classical guitar. His rhythms are tense and urgent, his phrasing stylized in emphasis, his tone kaleidoscopic but favouring the plangency that non-Iberian players reserve for special effect." (The London Times, May 22, 1965)
I read some comments... I think that is not possible to compare Segovia's performance to the others...Segovia was the "Maestro" who actually "invented" the guitar as a classical instrument...this doesn't necessarily mean he got the best tecnique...Anyway, Segovia played Asturias (his transcrption from original for piano) in his own way...slower, without "strappati" but to be honest some players as yepes, who come after him got a most impressive tecnique more suitable to the piece...
Ok thanks for that insight. Yes I suppose non Spanish musicians tend to play Spanish/Flamenco in a softer tone and it may be for the reasons you mention, or perhaps because they're not Spanish and don't possess that mind set! Interesting perspective:-)
Hi. Just been to your channel after reading your comments on JW's performance of Aranjuez. I hadn't heard of Yepes before (sorry!) but after hearing his version of Aranjuez on your channel I have to agree with you that he is astonishing! He plays this much better:-) I love JW and think he is an excellent guitarist and I like the way he plays, but Yepes might just pip him! Ps. I prefer JW's version of Asturias though! Don't hate me for saying that will you. Music is so subjective. Have subscribed
The album you said on this comment of Yepes, is it rare or something ? I've been trying to find it in ebay / amazon for a while now but i can't seem to find it ever :| Do you know any trusted sites selling vinyls that i can propably try to find it there?
I'm starting to work on this on the piano and it's labeled as "Prelude" to the cycle "Cantos de Espana" Op. 232. Is it a mislabeling or does this piece have two names?
You're right but there is a reality what everybody should to know: If Segovia didn't start the "guitArt", Yepes wouldn't be another thing from a luteist.
Samet GÜNDÜZ Holy Jebus, that's clueless. Segovia created nothing that didn't already exist. Francisco Tarrega (not a lutenist) lived before Segovia. So did Napoleon Coste, Johann Mertz, Zani de Ferranti, Nicolo Paganini (also a guitarist), Luigi Legnani, Giulio Regondi, Mauro Giuliani, Ferdinando Carulli, Fernando Sor, and many many more. To talk as you do is simply ignorant or a lie, however many people do the same.
@Aurelius27x Disagree, technically there is nothing to compare, Yepes is better. Emotionally we could dispute. I personally consider as the best classical guitarist, but that is just my personal favourite, there is a thin difference between the masters - Bream, Segovia, Williams and Yepes.
Yepes died 1997 & Segovia ten years earlier, yet we NEVER hear of Yepes only Segovia, that says more to me about Yepes than all your hyperbole. Perhaps you're looking at it from the wrong direction in that unlike Segovia and others, Yepes NEEDED the extra 4 strings to give his music depth and meaning, for they were there primarily for the resonance they added.
Oh I agree. Asturias to me is 'light classical' There are many pieces that will take you to a much deeper level. It just seems to me somewhere along the line this piece has somehow fallen into that 'yardstick' slot. Beats me how it got there! Segovia? Yes, a competent guitarist but I've always felt he was over-rated. I would put Williams above him. I have now listened to a lot of Ypes here on YT and I'm beginning to warm to him. His playing seems to be on a much deeper level than the others.
Muchas gracias.
"Tell me, what exactly did Segovia create for the classical guitar that never existed before? Think carefully; you are not dealing with an idiot." That's only your opinion.
More technique than Segovia but less soul.Segovia doesn’t play guitar .He lets his instrument talk to your heart ! With all my respect to The very big Yepes .
Unico e incomparable.
Master, Master, Master....Perfection does not exist in this world, but you're very close to it....
Yes! The only guitarist who can play this the way it should be played - in my humble opinion.
Mark Knopfler
What a stunning performance. His tone is so lush, BRAVO !!!!
When I close my eyes i am the void from which the father and I proceed as one.

How the Fuck do you know what Albeniz intended you snob piece of smug shit?

Genius. He makes the slow section sing like no one else.

Best interpretation ever. Full of life, drama...feeling. Bravo!
Great interpretation of a sublime composition.
Great. Who "don't agree" should not listen this kind of music, or not give any opinion if is ignorant.
You can hear him all day long without tire!
He was so good. RIP
Thanks for the up. Found my CD finally lol
As someone wrote: "it's complete riot" !
Thanks Narciso Yepes and RIP.
Muchas gracias MAESTRO. MARAVILLOSO!!!
This song is truly amazing. I would KILL to be able to play that. I'm only In level 5 of the Royal Conservatory Classical Guitar program so it'll be awhile before I get here I think.
This is absolutely breathtaking
¡Excelente!...
Yepes,the best!A genius!
Belleza... belleza total
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡amazing¡¡¡¡¡¡¡excellent¡¡¡¡
Narciso es lo mejor . FANTASTICO 12 en su guitarra olé.
son 10
I think this the best interpretation, better to the ear than Segovia. I must find more Yepes.
But Segovia still captures some essence outside of technique which others find difficult I feel
i have an album with him playing barrios stuff... really I reckon it must have been his fav cause it is really really so good... the interpretation makes the music so expressive its amazing.
buenisimo y precioso tema
Extraordinaire narcisso yepes rip
I met him with Concierto d'aranjuez (2) Love eversince

WELL DONE MAESTRO
I love all versions, but I like the way Yepes takes it even more than Williams, Segovia. But I love the others also.

He was not from Andalucia, Murcia is not Andalucia.
I will check it out. Thanks:-)

Ok thanks for that. I would like to hear that re-recording by Ypes of Asturias. Is it on YT?
Ok thanks for that insight. Yes I suppose non Spanish musicians tend to play Spanish/Flamenco in a softer tone and it may be for the reasons you mention, or perhaps because they're not Spanish and don't possess that mind set! Interesting perspective:-)
Brillante, brillante :fuckyea:
only a Spanish man would play this flawlessly

At first glimpse, this piece sounded very difficult. But once i started practicing i found out that yes it is very difficult
I'm starting to work on this on the piano and it's labeled as "Prelude" to the cycle "Cantos de Espana" Op. 232. Is it a mislabeling or does this piece have two names?
so those extra base strings are not just ornaments
Is it possible to have the video of this?
he plays it in a dvd that came out recently "grandes interpetes" recorded in 1970 by TVE. I recomend the purchase
what is that piece of box ?? where is the guitar???
"Don't waste my time."
You do that well without any help from me.
Yo trabajar en la mercia
How in the name of the lord is he doing slurs on two strings at the same time 1:37
Two deaf people disliked this.
You don´t say. :D he play like 3 guitarist in same time.
it makes me wonder how someone can be serious putting Bream on the same level with Yepes.
Narciso Yepes > Andres Segovia. Simple but true...
alborada777 it is music, not the olympics

Sounds like two guitars.
I am going to disagree with Pascal. I think Segovia's version is great in spite of this being the best version of Asturias that I have heard so far.
Oh I agree. Asturias to me is 'light classical' There are many pieces that will take you to a much deeper level. It just seems to me somewhere along the line this piece has somehow fallen into that 'yardstick' slot. Beats me how it got there!

He has more sense in this interpretation.
Muchas gracias.

good player - but absolutely shocking at finishing off phrases.
@pascal27able he isn't playing it well at all at least 20% of the time.
Djent guitars... Before it was cool, lol
Pretty good but still can't touch Segovia's.
