In terms of Abaddon becoming a demon prince: it is mentioned in certain lore bits that he has been able to ascend for a long time by this point but he has purposely held back that transformation through force of will so that he can ascend after the emperor is destroyed. I think part of his concern is that as a demon prince he might lose some of his essential purpose and drive he had as a mortal and become distracted from dealing with the imperium (much like the Demon Primarchs have to varying degrees until recently).

No, sorcerer lords of nurgle for example will start turning into demon princes automatically around the same lvls that heralds become great unclean ones
