@@CriscCiaddu .. no, it was not "one of the biggest and powerful Navy in 1880-1900" They could go after Turkish Navy or Austro-Hungarian Navy, they could be a threat to French or British Mediterranean squadrons, but that's pretty much all they could muster. They were far, far away from Royal Navy, American Navy, or even newly emerged Japanese Navy. Only two battleships were built by Italians in 1880, and (being allies in Triple Alliance), in case of a joint action against France, the Italians agreed that Admiral Haus, the Austrian commander in chief should take command of the proposed joint fleet.
To think that such a desperate united defense would mean nothing politically as the Russo-Japanase War and WW1 followed, breaking apart any notions of comradery built here. But learning about such a standalone event where 7 nations at each other's throats join forces like they always were to hold out at Peking and to save those trapped there is very fun and interesting. This really is one of the greatest moments in modern history, and will forever be memorialized in every version of 55 Days at Peking sung throughout the modern world.
I don't think there was much comradery there as all these nations just wanted to protect their own interests in China. And a few years later their interests didn't align anymore.
As some guy who studied rudimentary Chinese history in middle school in Chinese, it always tickles me how badass the Chinese name 義和拳 (Righteous and Harmonious Fists per wikipedia) is, and then the West just calls them "boxers" which I guess is really fitting seeing how funny the concept of some people trying to bring their fists to a gun fight while thinking they're invincible because they summoned gods to possess them is

Every time I learn of a historical event, either from youtube, classes, or personal research, I am always curious as to how much hiatory could have changed if tony changes were made to it. How would it have changed if the 100 fays reform kept going and succeeded? How would it have gone if the chinese sent their whole force and decimated the delegations? I love to think of these and wonder how things could have changed, for better or for worse.

Part of me would like a what if "Boxer Victory" the other part knows it would be mostly war crimes as the great powers lunched the mother of all punitive wars.

@@gloverfox9135 "germany" as we know it, has always been relatively compact under the holy roman empire, sure there were a lot of micro kingdoms but they were all part of that confederation. Bismark just united them formally. Italy on the other hand has always been intrinsically devided (still is btw) and has been occupied by many other countries like the normans, the spanish, the austrian and the french. And finally, italy had very very few natural resources unlike germany with the Rhur vally...
It's sad when people make fun of italy, it's almost like making fun of a disable kid... oh well, i guess it can't be helped, sadly my nation peaked more than 2000 years ago.
@@waterwatereverywhere3574Bro Italy was their fault. Not entirely but a very good bunch. But Italy was far more richer than the micro states or the HRE most of the time. Tuscan, Venice, Genoa. Don't made up like Italy was totally innocent ant their lack of ability was always not their fault. They were involved in it partially.
Great video, I actually visited a museum in a former monastery earlier this year and part of their collection were the robes of one of their missionaries that died in the boxer rebellion.
It makes sense that the Japanese divisions won
As mentioned in the video they had the power of modern weapons and DETERMINATION
And they were the largest contingent as well.

That man better get a memorial for that shit he pulled
I actually did a presentation of the Boxer rebellion for my final exams. Very interesting event.

There was the Orthodox as well.
@arnowisp6244 yeah, sry I forgot they evangelize Manchuria
YOOOOO!!! This is such an awesome video! So glad to see a classic channel make a video giving more history to such an interesting event. The German version of the song that you played at the start is my favorite, it’s such a banger!!! Awesome video!
Oh my god you’re like the third person to ever mention the 55 days at Peking on UA-cam I saw one video of all the nations involved like the song and I was obsessed but there were no more videos thank you
🥊 The transitions are becoming cooler day by day.
Already love the video
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 ❤
So this is where you have all been for this entire month? Well, it was totally worth it...
It was either my third or fourth time opening the app, and when I saw this, I started clapping and cheering like it was a football game. Ezekiel, thank you for creating this video.
Edit: 🥊
Always happy to see another good video on history that you've made.
Such a bizzare and crazy time image running a D%D campain in this setting
Man, I sure do love the story of the boxer rebellion, great video
I can only imagine the amount of mixed messages the Italians were getting, one moment they are assaulted by cannonballs and next they are given condolences and watermelons from the Qings
This was quite possibly the best animated documentary on the boxer rebellion I watched, its insane how I only just discovered this channel, please take my sub and I hope for more awesome videos like this.
22:43 IS THAT THE KENSHI SOUNDTRACK?!
Cixi try not to fuck up the stability and future sovereignty of China challenge: (impossible)
frrrrr “let’s build a marble boat guys”
She was ironically the one keeping it together, reason as to why she was the regent of China. If not for her a lot of famous military leaders and scholars would have overthrown the Qing.
@@巫轟good
@@巫轟 She did a very good job at keeping it together! I'm certain that China absolutely did not break down into civil war soon after, right?
@@EmperorProtects1 I hope you realize how fallacious your remark is.
Qing breaking after her death proves my point that she kept it together, lmao. Besides it was after Yuan Shikai that China fell into the hands of various warlords.
And Yuan Shikai did supported the coup because he knew he would be removed when the court had no longer use for him. Which may I remind you was after the death of Cixi.
She was not perfect, especially given the Boxer Rebellion debacle and the later Sino-Japanese War (cannot blame her fully for the latter given even Western experts were certain Qing would win with ease - indeed if conflict over Korea had started a few years prior Qing would most likely have won based on the journals of Takashima Kaemon who had close connection to Meiji officials and bureaucrats, and is famous for his divination practices that affirm the policy of Meiji Elite.)
Thank you, Ezekiel!
This really should have more views, absolutely incredible!
Glad you covered this.
That was a very interesting comparation between qin China and Japan. Nice video.
Bluds really thought they where inmune to bullets 💀

Poor Italy just wanted the Sanmen Bay but nobody of his friends told him that he needed a fleet.🇮🇹 9:23
Poor Italy learned nothing from her big brothers Great Britain, France, USA, or even her younger brothers Germany and Japan... How on Earth do you want to play the "gun boat diplomacy" game, when you have no gun boats? :P :P
@@CipiRipi-in7df Austria even demonstrated first hand to Italy during the Austro-Prussian War that they really need to upgrade their fleet, but didn't seem to learn from it. -_-
@@imgvillasrc1608 ...some folks never learn... 🤥🤥
Emmm the Regia Marina was one of the biggest and powerfull Navy in 1880-1900.....
The problem of italy was the poor international presence(bad italian politics, not so aggressive as UK, France etc)
@@CriscCiaddu .. no, it was not "one of the biggest and powerful Navy in 1880-1900"
They could go after Turkish Navy or Austro-Hungarian Navy, they could be a threat to French or British Mediterranean squadrons, but that's pretty much all they could muster.
The year was nineteen hundred tis worth remembering the men who lived through 55 days Peking
Such an epic video! Thank you for making this! And MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁
In our defense, no one told us that we were supposed to have a fleet.

'Peking' is what the British called Beijing because they couldn't pronounce it properly.
thanks for information
And to this day they still can't pronounce Tuesday
Peking is the Cantonese pronunciation of Beijing, which was the main Chinese variant spoken in British Hong Kong
Peking is the original name before Mao
I just call it Xigrad
As a Chinese person, I dont remember any of this fondly. But it goes to show that we are well and truly our own worst enemy.
As some guy who studied rudimentary Chinese history in middle school in Chinese, it always tickles me how badass the Chinese name 義和拳 (Righteous and Harmonious Fists per wikipedia) is, and then the West just calls them "boxers" which I guess is really fitting seeing how funny the concept of some people trying to bring their fists to a gun fight while thinking they're invincible because they summoned gods to possess them is
Different idea concepts.

This is one of my favorite stories ever thank you for doing this video.I think everyone should know about the boxer rebellion and the siege of the Peking 🥊 🥊🥊🥊🥊
Admirable dedication to using period-accurate Postal romanization.
25:09 it has been their favourite pastime activity. Mao did it later with the Cultural Revolution and Xi is trying to erase several fringe cultures as we speak.
