been playing shockabilly / rockabilly / punk for years. but man i love your tutorials here. you explain how these chords work and fit together very well. cheers eh. keep em coming
Luv Psychobilly played for a few years . there is not a whole lot of Psychobilly lessons out there period especially with good theory behind it so keep them coming! Good work!
Good video. I'm having a surreal moment. I did this stuff in the Radium Cats at the time (80's). So I can give you some thoughts of someone who helped invent this shit. We were basically trying to do rockabilly, but in minor keys (because it was scary, like the Munsters theme). I was listening to Django Reinhardt at the time (minor swing, minor blues) which influenced a lot of psychobilly at the time. There was an interview in 1980 something, that said Eddie Cochran listened to Django. We were all just making it up. How can we make rockabilly sound creepy.
I remember finding your band about 10 years ago, (don’t remember the name but I’m sure I’ll be re-acquainted shortly) and your guitar playing absolutely stood out. I was in a psychobilly band for about a decade.
Hey guys, checkout my patreon - there's now nearly a dozen full transcriptions matching youtube lessons on full tunes - Nekromantiix, Tiger Army, Krewmen, RHH, Demented are Go and more! There's PDFs of lesson material as well. It all matches my other videos lessons which are free, but the options are there if you'd like to support! Very exciting to see how this video has continued to grow, thank you all so much!!!
There doesn't seem to be any scarcity of psychobilly tutorials these days, ten years on from this upload. There's a variety of interpretations but that's no bad thing, we want to hear something unique about your own input, I'm certainly not disappointed here. The only offensive tutorials are those preaching the roots by people who weren't there. Specifically, those who get it wrong. A statement of appreciation is fine, we don't all have to be experts.
Hey mate, I’ve got heaps of lessons and full transcription of psychobilly songs and more on my UA-cam channel and Patreon now, not sure if you’re still into it but thought I’d let you know!
G'day Adrian. Awesome video, mate. Hey, you are right about some players hitting chords & not knowing what they are. I've met quite a few rockabilly players like that, & they can hit some awesome notes & not really know what the chord is, but they know that it falls in with what they are playing. I use many kind of strange "off notes" if you want to call them that with my rock & roll playing. The 'G' chord is one of my favorites as you can do a lot of the Cliff Gallup style playing & it sounds cool. Of course you can play Cliff Gallup style in any chord really, but 'G' is one of my favorites. One last thing, mate, yep, you gotta have a Bigsby!
i love it..i use this allot in my own music...simple and fun.....you sound really awesome....i just need to learn the scales and what i am actually doing...as i do it all by ear...not sure what i am playing..but its what you are showing...lol.....:)
Not sure if you’re keen, but if you check my channel again it will be worth it for you, I’ve got heaps more videos and a whole thread on theory for rockabilly and psychobilly :)
Hey man, I’ve added a link to this video to my Patreon that has heaps of material now on psychobilly but more importantly I’ve uploaded a few videos to my UA-cam channe recently and thought you might be interested in knowing :)
Personal preference mate - think about the sound you want, and then chase it! Or, play with the dials until it sounds right. So much of the tone comes from your fingers so practice and keep working at your tone through your fingers and your amp! I don't have a set formula for the dials to be honest
Thanks! Well mate- you certainly don't have to use it! I guess I come from a Jazz background. I tend to like things that sound a bit odd sometimes, or else it all gets the same! In this context it may seem odd, but try even just strumming a d major instead of doing the boogie power chord thing and it might fit better. This is very common in minor blues, but your ear is boss...
Hey dude, personal preference really! I'm using 10 - 46 here, elixirs. It's worth spending the extra money on good strings though, that's for sure! I would say don't go too thin, you want some beef to your tone. I would say 10 - 46 is a great starting point, the thinness of the low E (.046) gives it bite whist the the top end is not to thin to have some punch!
Hey mate, it should be standard tuning unless I'm out slightly (I often tune my personal guitar to different tunings and return it back by ear so it could be out of concert pitch)
Awesome tone and easy to follow instruction especially for an accomplished metal player who wants to learn psychobilly . Any videos on tone for psychobilly? I have a compressor with slap back running through a fender twin reverb. Any suggestions?
Watched the video on a psychology tone. It helped tremendously and I especially enjoyed the difference in the clean surf sounding psychobilly tone and the dirtier nekromantix/Tiger Army tone. A little off subject but what do you think of Batmobile?
Hey mate, sorry for the late reply - actually it's just a standard brass nut. The video quality is a bit grainy, I might have to invest in a better camera because I get a few questions that the ordinary pixel quality is responsible for! haha
Brilliant playing and I'll be working on that tutorial. Very inspiring.. love the way you explained the music theory (as I know jack) great sounding guitar.. Thanks for sharing!
I like the hollowbody personally - it's just a more interesting sound! But ultimately it's up to you - what do you hear in your head? I just did a video about psychobilly guitar tones - check it out!
Great lesson thanks. I love this sound! I have no idea who to listen too that sounds like it. Original Rockabilly yes, but who would you suggest as a good place to start with for the psychobilly vibe?
Not sure if I replied to this- listen to all of it! It's all relevant. I don't see how people get so up tight about it, given that the word psychobilly to my knowledge came out of the that old johnny cash song "one piece at a time".. Kinda says to me it's as much an attitude and feel than a specific band, style or era!
By the way, Cozy and myself are joining your Patreon as soon as we can. Unfortunately, at the moment, I am so broke that I am literally learning to play & sing the blues. 😂
Lol It sounds like you might be using your camera mic to pick up the guitar and vocals try using a interface have a lavalier mic and mic up the amp then sync the audio and video later without using the camera mics audio. Anyways besides that I still dig your lessons a lot where you from? I'm recently making guitar lessons for a rockabilly teacher ill be posting some vids in a month ill send you a link tell me what you think from Santa Ana California. Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!
Graveyard Bats i use a strymon el Capistan, and there’s a little bit of natural drive from the amp, which is a budda SuperDrive 30 watt, el84 based tube amp! Hope that helps!
With this kind of guitar clean through something with el84s, something like a vox or fender bullies junior perhaps. This was through a Budda SuperDrive 30 which is a bit like the amps I mention above
Hey dude, checkout my other videos- I have a duo jet with T Armonds in it- I love them =) These are the single coil dynas that come stock with gretsches. I also just got a jazzmaster and can't wait to sit down and do some vids!

Thank you for Zuvembi Stroll Good Sir!
I have a few CDs and records from you guys and the pole cats
Excellent teacher! Best on the internet. I wish he offered a full course.
Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated! When I get round to the next tutorial I think I'll just make up a solo and teach it!
Thankfully I have learned the basics so I can play along!
Holy cow. First 10 seconds of this video is mind blowing.
been trying to work these sounds out on my own, thanks for the good work explaining.
Great to hear, thanks Chris!
Very cool. Love the little tidbits of knowledge you included about how to get the psychobilly sound. Super informative.
I remember finding your band about 10 years ago, (don’t remember the name but I’m sure I’ll be re-acquainted shortly) and your guitar playing absolutely stood out. I was in a psychobilly band for about a decade.
That would be the Vaudevillains - thank you man, that is awesome to hear! Awesome!- what band?

Really great tutorial - I have learned a lot from your playing ... Thanks!
Hey mate, these strings were elixir nano webs I reckon. Really like them! I use jazz 3 picks generally: Thanks for commenting!
I might have to put something together in a similar vein, maybe 5 crazy psychobilly licks! lol

Cheers Herbert, I see what you mean!
Back when i wanted to learn there was no tutorial online like this.

Genius. Simply genius.
Sounds great, beautiful tones

Thanks for these tutorials, every bit helps.
Enjoyed this tutorial thanks
bill05555 no problems!
Awesome video man! I've always been interested in rockabilly/psychobilly guitar playing.
I use a strymon El Capistan, with a fairly tight slap back so it doesnt get too mushy! That help?
Excellent a new trick. Saved me a lot of work Thanks...
Great lesson, would like to see more Psychobilly lessons on your channel. ~ Cheers.
Hey mate, I’ve got heaps of lessons and full transcription of psychobilly songs and more on my UA-cam channel and Patreon now, not sure if you’re still into it but thought I’d let you know!

Aw man, I used to see you guys at the underage gigs at the Arthouse! Those were good old days. Great video!

+Adrian Whyte what pedal(s) are you using and what settings... love the tone and that's great echo...appreciate the response!
Awesome videos! Thank you!
Hey mate, sorry for the late reply - actually it's just a standard brass nut. The video quality is a bit grainy, I might have to invest in a better camera because I get a few questions that the ordinary pixel quality is responsible for! haha

great job. one minor pt - when using the little finger for the 3rd minor, do you palm mute and press hard with finger or use the finger as a mute ?
Brilliant playing and I'll be working on that tutorial. Very inspiring.. love the way you explained the music theory (as I know jack) great sounding guitar.. Thanks for sharing!
+tim toft Thanks Tim, hope you go well with it!
Cool, checkout the vaudevillains as well in case I didn't mention that. That was my old full band
Hey Adrian, what kind of nut is that? Looks like you have to run the strings through it, I've never seen one like that. Great playing.
Thanks for the video, inspiring.
Thanks man, love it!!
Cheers!
I like the hollowbody personally - it's just a more interesting sound! But ultimately it's up to you - what do you hear in your head? I just did a video about psychobilly guitar tones - check it out!
Good stuff.
Morris Ashby thank you!
Thats a beautiful Gretsch.
Great lesson thanks. I love this sound! I have no idea who to listen too that sounds like it. Original Rockabilly yes, but who would you suggest as a good place to start with for the psychobilly vibe?
Nekromantix
Nekromantix
dont listen shit shitmantix. listen to the frogs, retarted rats, magnetix, bollox quiffs, fireball xl5, highliners, frenzy, turnpike cruisers, KING KURT!!
Not sure if I replied to this- listen to all of it! It's all relevant. I don't see how people get so up tight about it, given that the word psychobilly to my knowledge came out of the that old johnny cash song "one piece at a time".. Great video, what’s your opinion on the Rev Horton guitar?
Sean Wakeling it’s cool! Good guitar. Personally I’d just go for the 6120 with trestle bracing and tv Jones, and make it your own signature model! ;)
Adrian Whyte Thank you Adrian, your videos and playing are awesome
Sean Wakeling thank you Sean!
thank you very much! this is great!
The Harley Riding the beast.
i wish i could jam on my upright with you! come to Los Angeles!!
how should i tune my guitar to get this psychobily sound?
Hey man, yeah when you play the D major and hit that F#, that's does create a harmonic minor vibe against the G minor tonality, so in short - right!!
Thanks sir!
Psychobilly ain't suppose to be Smooth. Very nice. I will be praticing this tonight.
It sure ain't! Thanks for the comment!
what is a good gauge string for this style?
Hi, does your index bar the G the whole time while shifting from G to C? Is G sort of acting a bass note the whole time? Thanks. Cool lesson.
i´m hope i´ll get it ones
By the way, Cozy and myself are joining your Patreon as soon as we can. Unfortunately, at the moment, I am so broke that I am literally learning to play & sing the blues. 😂
No stress at all! Let me know if you need some tabs :)
and what amp settings should i use?
Another incredibly helpful tutorial. Thanks for this! You must bring back the side whiskers! You look 10 years younger and at least 73% kookier. 😀
Ha! I was 10 years younger though - mind you I think I’ve become 10 years kookier since!
Great video. I'm a guitar noob. This helps tons
Good to hear! Have fun with it man :)
Lol It sounds like you might be using your camera mic to pick up the guitar and vocals try using a interface have a lavalier mic and mic up the amp then sync the audio and video later without using the camera mics audio. What strings and picks you use bro? Great vids love your style! I'm really into the jazz/rockabilly/hillbilly thing.
what tuning
Great lesson man, thanks :)
yo !! good job, many thanks.
What reverb effect are you using to get that slap back like that? Or is it a delay? And a overdrive I guess it is?
Graveyard Bats i use a strymon el Capistan, and there’s a little bit of natural drive from the amp, which is a budda SuperDrive 30 watt, el84 based tube amp! Hope that helps!
Adrian Whyte sounds really great!
Dude, you’re radical!!!
Sorry I never saw this!!
Good stuff brochacho
Thanks Dude!
When you add the F# it's a harmonic minor, right?
Adrian, GREAT lesson! Man, YOU could sure use a StringRay!
Haha yeah I remember the days when I was first working it out!
How did you get this tone
With this kind of guitar clean through something with el84s, something like a vox or fender bullies junior perhaps. This was through a Budda SuperDrive 30 which is a bit like the amps I mention above
No worries!
Can you upload a psychobilly boogie backing track? PLEASE
Sure does, thanks!
Hey dude, checkout my other videos- I have a duo jet with T Armonds in it- I love them =) These are the single coil dynas that come stock with gretsches. I also just got a jazzmaster and can't wait to sit down and do some vids!
Very decent! Thanks.
