Nice job. I have a 2005 X3 E83 and it has a similar front drive axel as the 328 car. I couldn't find a video on the E83 so I stumbled onto yours. Thanks for the info.
I’m getting ready to do it on a 2006 X3. Looks to be super simple, absolutely nothing in my way to get to the bolts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I saw another video that suggested using new bolts. Any thoughts on that? Seems unnecessary to me. Thanks!
I just replaced my transfer case on my 2013 X3 F25. The problem is that when I connect the plug to power the motor on the transfer case it goes into 4x4 drive. If the leave it unplugged its in 2 wheel drive and drives normal except all the lights are on (4X4, DCS, ABS, Park Brake etc) and a warming to use moderate braking. I've tried turning the small drive in the xfer case and turning the drive on the motor to different positions. Any ideas out there ideas out would be glad to hear them.
Great video. It seemed that you had described the symptoms I am dealing with. Get a humming from front end when decelerating from over 40mph. Replace the front drive shaft this weekend. As you stated very straight forward. And for 80 dollars no biggy. Still have the noise. Doesn't seem like the differential but maybe.
Great DIY Nathan! I’ve been waiting for you to do more e90 videos, glad you got around to doing it. Keep up the great work! Also, thank you for your service to our country.
thanks for watching , if you are referring service to the country I have not served in the armed forces , if you mean service to our country by making bmw videos and yelling about the stealership then yes I have served lol
Nathen good video as always except the torque is 20 nm then an additional 45 degrees. Those bolts are torque to yield also and should be replaced per BMW recommendations.
It's the first time I have seen you repair you're car anyway what would be the noise to diagnose if it's bad you have help me in the past about the rear drive shaft will it cause a low howling noise
Bought an e90 xdrive from a wholesaler this past summer.Shortly after I brought it to a local trusted mechanic due to white smoke and no start. Ended up fixing a bunch of stuff but my favorite was "the front driveshaft is missing".
Nathan I have clunk noise I can feel when I release the clutch every time 328xi manual transmission any idea it’s pretty and best way to describe sound is like a clunk or thump and I can see the transfer case move when I had a buddy release the clutch while I watched underneath
Hi Nathan, I have a 2006 BMW X3 and replacing the front drive shaft and found it is the only year with a spacer on it But the drive shaft i received is the standard size and fits fine without the spacer, do I need the spacer, Thanks
So if you have bad driving shaft or something wrong in it. Can you feel clunking exactly when the car stops, and vibration when you start the car, and transmission shifts odly? Bmw e83 X3 3.0i 4x4 automatic transmission ..Thanks! :)
Hi Nathan, thank you for the video. Im in the middle of doing this on my 2005 BMW X3. I disconnected the front end first and went to pull the driveshaft out, but it was attached to the flange on the transfer case and when I pull on that the transfer case fluid pours out. Is that normal or does that mean I have a defective part or seal? The flange just slips right out, and when I rotate it, its a little difficult to turn my hand and there is some grittiness sound as I rotate it.
tmulliganii01 how did it go? I’m getting ready to do a 2006 X3. I didn’t know that oil could pour out of the transfer case! Any suggestions to keep this from happening? Thank you.
@@MrDutchentre I sent mt x3 down the pike. I did successfully change it but ended up having continued issues with my transfer case. I believe I recall it was normal for the fluid to come out and you just have to replace it. I used the Ravenol product available on Amazon
My F10 550i Xdrive has a driveline vibration after I had my flex disc(guibo) replaced. I'm pretty sure the shop had it put in wrong. My main concern is, how do I tell if the driveshaft is knocked out of balance?
Thank you for upload those great videos..you have help me a lot.. question today I was driving my 03 x5 3.0...out of no where the vehicle stop hard body like I hit the brake. I heard a grinding noise coming in the front right before that happen. I try to move it forward and reverse no luck...would that be transfer case or driveshaft (front) any advice would be really appreciated thank you
My X3 transfer case flange does not move back and forth in order for me to install the front shaft properly?? doesn't want to fit without forcing it into place??
I notice you didn't have to remove the exhaust muffler assembly. What specific model of BMW are you working on. I have a 2008 528xi (E60). I am contemplating a DIY to Replace my Drive Shaft and Guido (Flex). Your video title says E90 E60X5 X3 but which model is the car in your video?
I have a growling noise on decel around 40MPH on my 2014 F10 N55 BMW and nobody can't find what it is. Even BMW did put the car on the hoist and the car does not make any noise up there, only with the weight. They found out that the front axel shaft was leaking grease and could had been that. I replacement myself the axel and the front bearing and still there. Next step is too look at this ujoint on the Drive Shaft. This part is not cheap and I don't want to guess replacing part for fun anymore but I need to find what it is, it drive me crazy.
Nathan you do this such a long time why dont you have a lift by now? For me I dont have one either but this wil not take years because my back is hurting from working like this...you dont have this problem?
I think I have the beginnings of this front driveshaft issue. I feel a little bit of a thump and wobble by my feet when slowing down.. no real noises yet. I’m planning on getting under the car this weekend and check it out. I also hear that you’ll see some red residue on the U joints and lower shield in some cases when the bearings are starting to fail. How many miles on your E90? I’m at 147k
Nathan's DIY Garage it turns out that the up to 2015 X1’s use the same exact front driveshaft, and I found one on eBay with like 14k on it.. that might be the one to buy since the part is like $300-$400 bucks new.

Did you find a video showing how this should be done? I am trying to do that for my 2004 X3 3.0. I hammered 🔨 the shaft but instead of the rear coming out like in the video, it's the front that fell loose. When I tried to yank free the rear, some shiny thing is coming with it from the transfer case. Don't want to spill the fluid like happened to you so I stopped to read comments.
Masoni Chisenga before it comes completely out like what happened to me gently press it back in hold the thing in place with one hand and tap the drive shaft with a hammer to see if it will come loose from the shiny thing (output shaft ) a helper will be ideal in this case to hold the drive shaft and tap it while you hold the out put shaft in place when mine came out I changed the seal and slid it back in and had to replace the fluid which is very expensive that was the first and only time I’ve ever done that job so take my advice with a grain of salt if your successful keep an eye out for leaks just in case there was any damage to the seal as it did slightly pull out good luck
@@vr-cx6lq thank you for that reply. I have taken a break to look for more info and your reply is very helpful. The shaft seems glued to the output shaft! Now that I know they come apart, I will gently pry them apart. I did use quite a bit of force with the hammer, glad no fluid came out, guess the seal is intact.
Masoni Chisenga use a rust penetrating spray as long as the 4 bolts are out and you make sure the output shaft stays in it will take some persuading lol been on there for years

Feels like a rattle grinding on metal coming loose I'm putting one on now just get it removed for the meaning you just won't have awd for lil bit

On ATC300 transfer case (3 and 7 series) usually the bearing in the transfercase is shot if the driveshaft kills its bearings.
Lukas Meyer would a bad driveshaft trigger the awd to fail? I just swapped out my transfer case and it’s still popping up that my awd and DTS is down
