is the tenth episode of the renovation of the old stone house from 1957 last century. In this video, you will see how I made a bedroom in the attic. I first had to fix the new beam with slats to get a plane on which I later screw the OSB board and thus get the final detail. The layers that I work on from the direction of the attic to the outside are OSB boards, vapor barrier, rock wool, and the final covering profiled sheet metal to which a layer of geotextile is glued.
1.- OSB BOARD: the usability of OSB boards and their characteristics are more or less known to everyone.
2.-VAPOR BARRIER: Water and moisture are the enemies of thermal insulation because they lose their properties in contact with them. That's why vapor barriers - vapor-impermeable foils - are placed on the inside of the wall and roof construction, towards the room. They prevent the penetration of water and moisture into the thermal insulation, that is, the penetration of moisture further into the roof or wall construction. On the other hand, they allow the room, walls, and ceilings to "breathe". During assembly, attention should be paid to the details, i.e. ensure that all joints are watertight.
3.-ROCKWOOL: Stone wool fibers can withstand temperatures above 1000 °C. While the binder starts to evaporate much sooner, the fibers still retain their shape and stability. This is precisely why rock wool retains its thermal conductivity and fire-fighting functionality even when temperatures, for example in the event of a fire, exceed 900 °C. Thermal conductivity depends on the temperature of the object being insulated. At optimal temperatures, rock wool has a thermal conductivity between 0.035 and 0.040 W/mK. The most important advantage of rock wool is its ability to retain its insulating properties for a long time in case of fire. This makes it possible to protect other materials with rock wool from overheating and self-ignition. By using rock wool, temperature deviations are reduced, and in the event of a fire, the potential speed of fire spread is also reduced. The energy of the sound vibrations travels through the structure of the rock wool and is converted into heat. The structure of rock wool simply destroys vibrations in the air and absorbs them with its interwoven fibers. This simple fiber structure makes rock wool one of the best absorbent building materials. Moisture inside insulating materials is known to reduce thermal conductivity properties. ROCKWOOL may appear wet when exposed to water or rain, but this is only superficial because ROCKWOOL fibers are water-resistant.

The room is now worthy of the rest of the cabin. What you have done is nothing short of incredible. The heat that will rise from the main floor will be recirculating throughout the entire cabin now. The way you are going about this complete build is exactly how all real builders would want to make it but never do. I love that your videos are all doing and no narrative. It makes them very peaceful to watch. I spent last weekend digging a drainage ditch under my house. It's work that needs to be done as the previous builder didn't drain properly. It's been backbreaking work, and it's really pushed me. The ground was so hard it needed to be jack hammered, so I spent all day lifting a 90 pound jackhammer in and out of the ditch. Funny thing is, when I was done for the day I felt really good. I'm fixing a problem in the very foundation of my house. It's like active therapy. I think a lot of men should choose to build things as a form of therapy, there's a need for it, the calming feeling of simply building something useful.

Incredible transformation, that little cabin is becoming a warm, modern, yet still very traditional home. You've kept the most important aspects of it alive while upgrading it to utilize cutting edge technology as well, winters there are almost assuredly going to be cozy with the amount of insulation you've incorporated. Built around 1960, it survived until now, and with your construction skill, I'm sure it will last another 60 years at least, more like 100 years more likely. Taking time out to play with Lajka shows how much you love her, and keeps her engaged with your work. As a kid, my best friend was a wolf named Shasta who lived on the mountain where our property was located, and while we lived our own lives, she and I always found time to go on adventures together. My campsite was nothing more than a tent and campfire, and she would curl up next to my fire at night to stay warm, once you get the wood stoves installed I'm sure your girl will be sleeping next to them whenever it gets cold there.
Your attention to detail and work ethic are astounding, something that is dying and almost gone here in the USA unless you can find an "old school" craftsman to do the work, be proud of yourself! Happy New Year, may you and your loved ones have a great year filled with love and laughter. Give that girl a belly rub and lots of treats, she's always a joy to watch in your videos.

Hi Mr. Luxon, Looking very nice. The rock wool looks heavy duty, and should be a cozy place. Years ago when I worked with rock wool, it was spun in batting, and was a nightmare to work with. If that's a wood stove chimney....6 inch clearance around the stovepipe is pretty standard. Some places it's alot more. You could get a metal box to put around the inside roof part so that your plywood would have a border to butt up to and not be a fire hazard. The floor needs a box too. Duravents are what I used.

The attic needs some type of ventilation to allow the hot air to escape in summer months and to prevent condensation on rafters in winter months.

Yeah, I'm no expert but unless you can do an absolute thermal break with spray-foam on all surfaces of the metal roof, this will be condensation hell and sealing the top and bottom will be very problematic as there will be no evacuation possible. Usually you put water-sheding systems toward the exterior (housewrap like Tyvek), then insulation and then vapor-barier on the inside to prevent moisture from the room (even your breath contains moisture) from going inside the walls. I'm worried about this for the mid-term.
In order for condensation to occur, warm air must come from the premises to the sheet metal, which is not possible in this case. Thanks for watching.

You are making the attic almost airtight. How will you provide for exhausting inside vapor and preventing condensation?

It needs some air flow between the insulation and the metal roof ! The rockwool , the timberframe, the foam , the osb, the metal sheets , all respond diferentlly even to night and day temperature cicle , not to mention frost/defrost. The way it's sealed now , it can't be dry in between , the moist will work there silently with no visible signs !

When freezing outside , right on top of the surface of the thin metal sheet it will be negative degrees , right under there it will be pozitive degrees , the rock wool density determines the pecentage of air inside , wich is not pure gas , it has humidity , I'm telling you becuse I like your project and I know these things since I worked as a salesman and technical representative for a roofing company. @@luxonbushcraftGood luck !
