    Wow! This is the first time hearing this version. The first and last time, I played this Suite was in High School, 1965. I was 1st Chair, Clairnet and Oboe. Then I went to War, as a combat medic in Vietnam, 1966-1969. I survived, but never picked up an instrument again.
    Thank you for sharing.

    Tiny clarification: This is the music of the ORCHESTRAL SUITE, 25 minutes of a ballet that lasts, in one recording of the complete version, 37 minutes or half again as long. This performance offers the original orchestration for piano, flute, clarinet, bassoon, and strings. Because only 13 musicians could fit into the small orchestra pit at the Library of Congress where the ballet premiered, the strings were originally limited to two first violins, two seconds, two violas, two cellos and a bass. Here, each string section is covered by a larger group, but the music is no less delightful for that. Thanks for posting!

      On top of that, this isn’t even the original orchestral suite. The original suite has much more dense and difficult parts for the performer. It is the 13 Instrument Chamber Version of the Suite done by a large orchestra. This is far from the original version of the full ballet that it is claiming to be.

      Thank you for sharing. No matter how large or small the orchestra is, Aaron Copland, is a Pure, American Musical Poet. Pure Genius. He gave American Literature, a Musical Voice, Sound and Substance, that All American's, could relate to.

    My eyes drew immediately to the aged audience. I thought, where are the younger people? I always enjoyed the great classics. Even at an early age. I think i was in my 30's/40's when this 'reproduction' of yet another great classic was first performed. Still have the vinyl copy. But getting back to the 'ages', I'm so grateful that many of our young today throughout the world are the new musicians as witnessed here. Fantastic group of young talent. My appreciation to all of them and to the parents who guided them.

    I prefer this version. The orchestration is thick enough to where it sounds full, but thin enough to where you can literally hear every part. Very nice performance.

    Finally a blog where the contributors confined their comments to the music! This is the first time I have listened to this beautiful evocative piece of American music.

      Nadia, listen to these pieces as well......................
      "Morning Mood" and "Ases Death" by Edvard Grieg
      "Romeo and Juliet Overture" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
      "The Planets" by Gustav Holst
      "Pictures At An Exhibition" by Modest Mussorgsky (orchestral version, NOT the piano version).
      "Adagio For Strings" by Samuel Barber. Now with THIS song here, SOME people will say that the best version is by Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1988.
      The easiest way to find that version is to type "Barber Adagio For Strings Slatkin" into the youtube search window and look for the 9:09 version that shows Samuel Barber himself sitting at a desk while wearing a long sleeved blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up just above the elbows. Barber is holding a pen in his right hand and there are a few pieces of music paper on top of the desk he is sitting at.
      SOME people consider THIS version to be the greatest recording of that song EVER.

      Just curious!........did this score ever accompany any type of historical film ? In my opinion it would have fit in quite nicely for a "serious" film production. Thank You ! P.S. GOOD JOB YOUNG PEOPLE AND CONDUCTOR ! 🎻🎼🎵

      Damn!.......What a sour audience ! People, couldn't you have been a bit more demonstrative in appreciation by offering a more robust applause than that weak stuff you put out there ? Sorry kids! You and your conductor did very well ! I can just imagine the many hours of rehearsals and hard work that you put into this fine composition. 🎶 P.S. GOOD LUCK !

    Great music and great playing. It is not the original, complete version, though. This the suite version (13- instruments, here with an enlarge string section) - without the about 10 minutes or so music Copland cut out of the complete ballet for the suite.

    I’m not sure that substituting the harp for the piano was the best idea in particular for Simple Gifts. There’s a certain subtlety that Copland was going for that this pianist lacked. There was a little disregard for balance, either on the part of the pianist or the arranger. The only part that it fit right in was at the end of simple gifts where it just added a nice oomph. Aside from that, this is a beautiful rendition.

    Bassoon after 8:33 ......there should be at least a LITTLE MORE solo Bassoon before the strings come in. Maybe another 2 - 4 seconds.............just as a "breather" for the audience between one section of moving notes and the next section of music at all.

      Every conductor will dictate what he/she wishes to elaborate on. I agree to a point, but that's what makes and breaks conductors.

    • @france1662

      There is no percussion in the original Suite.

    • @Gwailo54
      @Gwailo54 6 років тому

      Not only is there no percussion in the original ballet score, but it was for 13 instruments. This ensemble is far too overweight in the strings. This lacks the leaner sound of the original ensemble.
      As you might have guessed by now, I prefer the original!

    • @facusaquito
      @facusaquito 3 роки тому

      Gwailo54 Copland allows to the conductor the possibility to expand the strings to 16 violins 8 violas 4 cellis and 2 basses. He wrote it in his score ;)

  • @Teladian2
    @Teladian2 4 роки тому

    But this isnt the original version, well the music is but the number of players is wrong and sobit throws off the ballance and burries the wind players and piano. If yiu do the original version it has to be 13 instruments. The performancr as a performance is fine... just not able to hear the ballance properly...
