Hello Mr. Mando-Lessons. A few years back, my great - grandmother died and I inherited a 1960s german mandolin. Now I'm in my mid-20s and finally decided to give it a go. I just put new strings in it today and thanks to your videos I'm going to able to learn this awesome instrument! Thanks for the great content!
I had been trying to learn to play the guitar, however after having to have surgery on both of my hands and still dealing with neurological issues i can't hold onto the my guitar. So my Adopted Mom suprised me with the gift of a very lovely mandolin. I know absolutely nothing about them at ALL except I can grasp it.. So there's hope? It's gonna hurt my hands to play... But I'm also learning pain is life... I wanna Live!! & Learn & Play!! Teach me!!! New strings will be here Wednesday!☺❤
Awesome! Hope you learn a few tunes. It's a nice sounding instrument. I just got one, so I know absolutely nothing about them either, but slowly getting used to it. 🙂👍
I broke a finger really badly years ago right as i was getting better at guitar and kinda gave up.. the finger is still not great but im thinking about a mandolin, viola or banjo, something where reach isn't at such a premium. I think this could work, best of luck
I like your updated beginner series. It's nice to go back after a year of playing to see how my technique is, and make sure I haven't developed bad habits.
I look many years ago for mandolin lessons or info any where online and found nothing other than "go learn the violin and you'll know enough" so I didn't buy a mandolin but with the glut of content on your channel I have finally decided to pull the trigger! Thank you so much!
Thank you. So far, this is the best first lesson I have found. Some of us never even picked up a stringed instrument, ever (and I am sixty, so that is a long time..) and we need this sort of thing. I think I shall go find a strap, now that I just got my *first ever* instrument, an A-oval-hole-mandolin. Thank you! i will certainly be back.
Hi Anne! I have found a kindred soul. I am even older than you (by, er, a little) and never attempted a stringed instrument in my life. For some reason, I decided to take up the hobby and learn the mandolin. I followed Baron's advice to purchase a Kentucky KM-250 A string mando kit (Elderly's service was fantastic). So, the first obstacle was getting the darn strap on the end pin and figuring out where to secure the other end. The end pin part was NOT easy! I feel that one of the flaws (for me) in Baron's 1st lessons is that he didn't explain frets and how HARD I have to push between the frets (not ON the fret like I first tried and produced a sound like "thunk"). .Maybe my instrument needs lighter strings (?) or lowered at the bridge. Fortunately I have found a teacher in my town who (online anyway) has a good rep and I start next week. I don't think I would be able to make a good start without some personal assistance. I am just curious how it is going for you after 2 months. I really wish YT still let us have PM, but I don't know how to get in touch other than publicly. If you do not wish to reply, I will understand.
@@timkennedy1192 Well, I figured out the strap (for me, and they are all different), and am very happy with the $12 leather strap I got. (I put it around the top - or bottom? they call it the bottom, I think.. of fret-board and it works great.) Regarding fretting; it takes a while and it takes days and weeks of hours-long work (don't make your fingers bleed, but, do play scales every day, no matter how frustrating.) I also recommend an hour, a day, of strumming practice. If you feel like playing with your left hand, do it. But, how am I doing? Well, it doesn't sound all that pretty, but I can play six songs, now, and they can be recognized as songs (well, maybe not the jig; behind the haystack..) I taught myself two (or three?) songs, completely by ear, and am pretty pleased with that/ I looked and looked for some help on, "Fly Me to the Moon", on mando; nothing. So, I kept at it, for a few days, and picked out the notes. When it sounds a bit better, I will post myself playing it, but it may be a while. (I have to practice it every day for a bit.) How long are you in it? I am about ten weeks, now, and it's been terrific.
@@timkennedy1192 By the way, first wrap the end of strap around the neck/head.., and then attach to the pin (if your has a pin, and if not, have one installed.) That took me a bit to do,but., am very glad I did it that way and not with the string. (I tossed the string.)
@@timkennedy1192 Sorry; one final thing; Baron generally does a live gig on Saturdays, around noon (I think is noon Eastern, but, I may be wrong. May be noon Central time.) Anyway, if you sign on during his live gigs, you can ask him all sorts of questions, particularly if it pertains to mandolin or other stringed instruments. Time for me to practice, again! Cheers.
Please keep your videosa up! I just got a mandolin from my husband for Christmas after asking for a guitar- he bought me both! I am excited to play this as both my grandpa and brother played and it's such a darn cute instrument I am very happy to find your videos! Thanks for making them
I found old banjoline (banjo + mandolin hybrid) and I'm in love with this instrument. I can't find any bright tutorials for begginers to play banjoline but your mandolin lesson help me so much to start my own music journey! Thanks ;)
Thank you for this. I'm a terrible sloucher so I thought it would be hard to learn to sit up straight, but this actually made it super easy. The tip about angling the instrument to suit your arms rather than vice versa was right helpful. As someone who's never seen a mandolin before now, let alone tried to play one, the focus on dead basic stuff is wonderful :)
Hi, im completely new to mandolin, was a guitar player many years ago, im now 57 years old and im looking forward to all your lessons, thanks for the video ( just subscribed ) 👍.
I had one 30 years ago. I have been thinking about getting one lateley. I learned how to srltring, tune and play chords. Ive gotten into choir singing since then but would be fun to pick it up again
im still 13 years old and i never played a mandolin ever but i really love the instrument, i hope i can be a good mandolin player in the future lol and also i think mandolins are underrated
I just left guitar center and was. Looking for an acoustic guitar but put my hands on a mandolin and was super impressed with its sound and started to change my mind
Getting a mandolin tomorrow from my uncle, the thing is I am a violinist (been playing for 9 years) so the fingering and strings are extremely easy for me to remember lol
Oh good! Another violinist! I've played around with the guitar, but it's just so huge and awkward after the violin. My nephew suggested mandolin. I think it makes more sense from what I've seen so far. I also play piano.
This is great! Thanks for making your lessons free! I had purchased an old mandolin on eBay and it has sat on a shelf daring me to learn to play it. Going to do so now by following your clear and friendly lessons.
I'm in my 50s and never learned to play a musical instrument. The mandolin has one of the most beautiful sounds of any instrument. If I was to learn to play anything, it would be the mandolin.
I love the videos. Helping me start up after some years off. I actually live down the street from the man that made your mandolin. I went to school with his kids and got the pleasure to meet him and see his workshop as a teenager. He is an awesome guy and a hell of a bass player. I look for that Ellis name everytime I see a mandolin. You got yourself a mighty fine instrument there sir.

Thanks for doing your lessons for free! Your my main Channel for mandolin stuff :) I played other stringed instruments before so I’ve got a nice head start
I’m blind in my left eye, so over time I ended up adapting how I hold an instrument so I can see what I’m playing - mandolin, guitar, or bass - something I did without even thinking about it, but eventually noticed it. My instrument is always off to my right side, and pointing somewhere between straight forward like a shotgun or 45 degrees off to the left. The lesson here is, do whatever works for you! Start off with some guidelines, but don’t feel bound to them if something happens to fit you better.
