My aunt gave me her mandolin shortly after her wife died. ive struggled a lot in the past with finding and instrument to play that i feel comfort with but now that ive started playing i can barely put it down. thank you Aunt Treese, and I love you Aunt Dawn
Really sorry for you and your aunt's loss, but it's a wonderful thing that you have a part of her with you that gives you comfort, if not a sweet reason for how you got into the mando as well 💙
The mandolin is a great instrument. Whenever I tell folks I play the mando they assume it's bluegrass. Fact is I play very little bluegrass music. I can play along with just about anything that's going.
Indeed. Mandolin is one of the instrument the stereotypical Italian play, at least in the eyes of the foreigners. Germans usually say "Italians, pizza, spaghetti, mandolino" (the more sophisticated throw a guitar in it) and indeed the mandolin was invented in Italy, almost at the same time both in Naples and in Lombardy (the region where Milan is, home for example to the Stradivari violin makers - sorry if I sound nerdish and know-it-all).
Given the roots of the mandolin I would imagine there are way more mandolin tunes that aren't bluegrass than are! Great job. I would add Heart's Silvan Song/Dream of the Archer as a favourite.
You can play almost anything on almost any instrument. I play a flute, which is an instrument that can't play multiple notes at the same time, but I play Metallica, Black Sabbath, and Night on Bald Mountain on it like every day. You can figure it out if you try.
Cool! You have good technique! Thee are also thousands of pieces of classical music. None are bluegrass. Lol! I love Bach, Vivaldi, Händel, etc. Baroque dounds great on mandolin. Beethoven wrote 4 or 6 pieces for mandolin for some gal he was in love with. Mozart also wrote some music for mandolin. There are a lot of superb turn of the 20th century Italian virtuoso mandolin pieces such as Munier's Capriccio Spagnuolo. And the list goes on. Anything written for violin is good for mandolin since mando is a plucked version of the violin I need to taste something besides classic as I've had a hankering for something more modern for just the last month so I really like your offering here. Very nice! Hahaha! Perfect coincidental timing for me. I have two mandos. One flatback and my favorite, my bowlback. Thanks for posting this!
@@theredcomet844 I used to really dislike the mandolin when I started listening to bluegrass. Became a running joke with a friend. These days I'm used to it and that was the start of learning to love it.

One of the songs I used to teach myself mandolin, transferring my knowledge over from guitar: “Here Comes The Sun.” George Harrison actually used a capo way up on a guitar, to get it into a mandolin register. I thought, hey, skip the middle man and figure it out on a mandolin. It sounds great, too!

@cat and biscuit Mandolin is Italian!
It's the staple instrument of Southern Italian traditional music
Technically most of the mandolin canon in bluegrass was written for fiddle anyway
Nice, thanks. In addition all the Irish Traditional jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc. are very well suited to mandolin.
Also any classical pieces written for violin
That's for sure. Nothing nicer than Irish- style on the mandolin.

Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
I laughed and she'd smile
It would last for awhile
You don't know what you got till you lose it all again
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go
A cool evening dance
Listening to the bluegrass band takes the chill
From the air 'til they play the last song
I'll do my time
Keeping you off my mind but there's moments
That I find, I'm not feeling so strong
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go
Running down by the lake shore
She did love the sound of a summer storm
It played on the lake like a mandolin
Now it's washing her away again
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go
The boat's steaming in
I watch the side wheel spin and I
Think about her when I hear that whistle blow
I can't change my mind
I knew all the time that she'd go
But that's a choice I made long ago
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go
