Detailed voice over, practical demonstrations and animated 3d illustrations; all while keeping it fun and entertaining to watch.... this is about the best instructional video i've ever watched. The finished desk looks amazing too.
Very impressive. Exactly what I wanted to have for my digital piano and Viscount Legend organ console. This video will help me with talking points to the carpenter. Thanks for documenting your plans and steps.
I am always messing with the keyboard and wanted to build a desk for my job but also wanted a desk to combine my music hobby. This is incredible! Some adjustments and i have my ultimate work/studio desk. Thank you very much for sharing!
Your choice of stains and varnishes that you have selected have definitely proven a gorgeous combination! If it doesn’t look as good in real life, we’ll then at least it’s photogenic! THANK YOU FOR SHARING!! This makes me really want to find a method to plan and execute a DIY setup that would resemble the ‘A frame’ style 3,4, and or 5 tier Synth stands that you see quite often. I own quite a few synths but nothing over 5 octaves. Hmm, I really am contemplating getting 4 pairs of the tracks, like for your keyboard drawer and hoping that I’d be able to create a sort of multiple tiered stack of synthesizer drawers. As long as I put a sort of rigidity - tier (or two) in place that does not have the drawers on its edges, then it ought to hold together. I’ll have to check into it, but I think those drawers might be a decent way to go! THANKS AGAIN, great work!!
Thanks for this video! I am close to a start point to building a desk and this is going to help tremendously. Probably going to do more of a desk with angled sides, but was stumped on how to do the legs (sides). I love how you did yours and will likely go with that same look.
nice job! Mines is all getto although noone would ever know. Metal framed rectangular eating table 4 legs with a decorative piece that could be removed 4 sections 2 long 2 short ones. Took out the one long piece, put in some right angle braces from a busted up arcade machine so it wont collaps, monitor is on a stand on a old organ bench off to the side of the whole contraption and midi controllers plopped on top of the desk. The typing keyboard stand is a flatscreen wall mount bolted to the bottom of the desk with a cutting board atached to it hah! Made the whole concoction during quarantine in the spring when home depot and gc were closed and it is holding up pun intended quite well! Roomy, supports 3 different midi controlers, yamaha fb-01, a small tenma scope, a caraoke mixer thing being used as a rizer for other equipment behind axium49, my drinking cups and snacks, my smaller maudio B monitors, and other bells and wistles.
Mike to Mike! Dude!! You’re nuts!! 🥜 Completely, absolutely nuts! That desk tho..... man!! It’s amazing!! Damn! I wanna do that and I don’t have time or energy to do that but I still really really wanna do that and it’s all you fault my good sir! 😁
I wish I was as talented as u to make such an amazing desk urself I'm.really inspired by ur video..surely gonna use ur ideas and custom make something like that for my room..my keyboard size and height..
Nicely done--I've been studying many designs and yours is among the cleanest and nicest. Of course, since I am also still planning to build my studio/music room I've found it near mind-boggling to absorb all the great ideas and incorporate them into my space LOL!. Thanks for your terrifically presented video and instructions--very professional! 👍👍 Not sure if your design will be ideal for me yet and I may need to make a mock-up to evaluate it better, but it was valuable to watch nonetheless!
Very nice work designing and building your desk. I have been looking for some time now for a desk design that would work for me. I think this fits the bill 100%. It will hold my 88 key controller as well as my 34" display, speakers, computer and rack gear. Thank you for providing the plans and I am looking forward to building this once I finish with the house renovations. Cheers!
Well done mike. Not only was the build very impressive, the video you have produced is one of the best on youtube. Really top level video editing on your channel. Keep up the good work brother!!! P.s where's fiddler lately 😂😂😂😂
Thanks Glyn, it's really nice that it's noticed. Almost a full week went into this one, which is unsustainable in a way, but once in a while ok. It's just the way I saw it in my head, so that's how it had to be! Really I'm not any kind of carpenter, so hopefully it can inspire someone to say "if he can do it, so can I" The toddler is busy on Twitter! I'm sure we will see him again :p
Excellent, I only have a doubt, how do I make it so that when the keyboard is pulled, it stays fixed and does not move when it comes to pressing the keys hard, some way that it is fixed when it is in the touching position, and some way that it is fixed in the closed position, such as fixing the rails?
Yep, I remember watching so many videos. Gather as many viewers ideas as you can. In the video, it kind of looked very smooth. In reality, I made some errors here and there, and had to adapt on the fly. But I was glad I was 90% prepared!
Very nice... I do have a question on the rails you used? I am making my desk now and need to sturdy drawer rails for a 56" lenght keyboard shelf that is 12" deep. I am using an M-Audio Oxygen pro. Not heavy, but looking for something that I can work with the day I step up. Thanks and once again, great build!!
Hi Mike! I hope you're well... You are awesome! Thanks for all these wonderful in-depth videos; I have learned so much from you! Keep up the great work! :)
Hello, good job, I really like your desk design, that's exactly what I was looking for. Just a couple of questions: what's the length of the tray rails ? And what kind of black matte paint did you use? Was it normal acrylic paint ? Thanks.
nice work bro i hit you with a sub im trying to figure out which model desk id like to build u did a really clean job on this impressive work man.. this is a great video appreciate it..
I was wondering if your drawer was holding up. I have an 88-key keyboard as well (though maybe not as heavy) and was wondering about the wide span when it comes to the weight of the board as well as maybe sometimes hitting the keys hard. Now that you've had it a while, does the MDF seem like it will last? Thanks! Awesome desk!
Hi, good question. Its absolutely rock solid. I guess the key to the MDF here is that the back panel of the draw being glued to it, prevents any possibility of it bending under the weight. In addition, the actual size of the keyboard means the weight is dispersed evenly. You can sense the weight of the keyboard and the drawer combined though, so I think it imperative that people dont compromise on the sliding rails. Make sure they are rated to carry the keyboard, the drawer PLUS downward weight from your playing. For anyone reading, DON'T think you will get away with the kind of sliders you see on most IKEA furniture!
Thumbs up from me! Just out of curiosity... how much does your controller keyboard weigh? I have a Korg Kronos 88 key that clocks in at about 55 pounds and have been trying to come up with a similar solution.
Cheers! My keyboard at the time weighed 33lbs. When you buy the rails, they are weight rated. I made the wood a little thicker, to take longer screws for the rails, and used many screws! It's never felt close to being under strain to be honest.
I just finished building my own desk. One thing I kind of regret is I used a maple vaneer plywood top. I wish I would have gotten a little bit of a nicer piece of wood. What kind of wood did you use for the top? Was it the same wood for the whole desk?
Bro u did it BY urself like u didn't grab any pieces off the web 😂. I don't know if it's in my budget but it sounds interesting I hope I can make something that fits my studio's needs
Cool stuff! I'd try to build something like that (have some crafting skills) but since this is Japan, I don't need to. Must do EVERYTHING on one square meter of "studio" space, hehe
Hi Michael, thank you. Around $1100 was the cost, but do keep in mind that here in Australia, timber is expensive, and shipping in a stick desk is even more expensive!
@Creative Sauce... Awesome video and nice desk. I've already started this project but was wondering on page 3 under side view, you have 200mm for the depth of your rack units. Is that an error? I have a Focurite Clarett8PreX and the depth of it is 250mm. Did you want the back of your rack units to stick out the back side?
Hey Warren - I think it was just based upon a nice join for the top, and the gear I have. I do have one that pokes out a little, but I don't mind it (cant see it).

Thanks Mike. Just the inspiration that I needed. Planning some wood purchases now.
