    great video as always. we just got a claimed 4k with loop and very disappointed more on that later. But with OBS you have to consider several items when doing captures at 60fps as the first one you did does about 40 to 48fps in real world use. bit rate, frame buffer and keyframe all play a big part in how OBS creates it capture when you only allow it to select the default profile. because Elgato's profile is already defaulting to the higher frame rate, there are really no adjustment you need to make. However the other ones you will need to manually configure to get the frame rates higher. Also, it 1280x720 which is really the 60fps mode, but you can get better at 1920x1080 too. We are setting up some information as we started back to a few projects. the C19 issues and all that have put many projects on hold.

    Thanks for the review and the revelation.
    A few other things I'd like to see in such reviews, because these factors can drastically affect how video is processed and how it appears on a display.
    1) Does the adapter have HARDware encoding/decoding, and if so, which codec(s) are supported? (often only 1)
    2) Is your computer doing HARDware encoding/decoding and if so, which codec(s) are supported? (often only 1)
    3) Are the computer and software you're using supporting and processing using the GPU or is it all being done by the CPU?
    The CPU% I saw listed (2.5%) seemed a bit low, but then again you weren't processing a massive amount of motion in the images so if the CPU is powerful and fast enough that might make not reveal any major differences with such limited data rates. Also, whether or not the software supports multiple simultaneous CPU threads would be a performance factor as well (depends on the OS and the software and of course the CPU).
    4) It would be interesting to know if a given video adapter and software ever supports H.265+, because H.265+ handles and displays lots of motion MUCH better than H.264, and I'm looking forward to hardware and software that can handle it. H.264 is actually quite poor at encoding motion between frames. I'm unsure if H.265+ is proprietary and/or just too expensive to license for manufacturers to use.

    • @PE4Doers
      @PE4Doers  3 роки тому

      Unfortunately for these low cost units, there is 'very little' technical information available. I honestly do not believe any H/W encoding is embedded in the knock-off chip, since some people have had issues with specific types of content.

    Hi PE4Doers. Thanks for your opinion on the capture devices basic features you analised in this presentation. In this regard, please advise - would it be possible to rely on these capture devices in such an arrangement: Video Camera (RCA output) Recorder (i.e. Handycam V8) > RCA to HDMI AV Converter > one of those capture devices under your consideration here (with HDMI input). • @PE4Doers

      @@ThriftyAV I did not try a compare having actually returned the one in the metal case, but I have used it for about 2 hrs continuously when recording one of my videos and it set for a continuous side-side to capture anything my primary camera missed. I took it off right after that and did not feel more than a slightly warn case. Also, all the video taken during that period appeared fine (but was not used in the end since my 4K camera caught everything I needed). I did read that same concern in comments from others, but I did not see that they actually had a problem caused by heat - I did not have such problems, so maybe its just a theoretical problem somebody thought through due to the plastic body.

  • @billfreeman5201

    Thanks for the more in depth review. Where I come from the newer version is cheaper than the original and I have discovered that despite the blue USB 3.0 on the original, it is actually running USB 2.0, which other than misleading, does not seem to affect performance. As for the 60 vs 30fps thing is concerned, it is a very minor thing really because the vast amount of video material that we actually watch is actually 30fps or less. When it comes to the comparison with the Elgato it does show that the Elgato is way overpriced, regardless of it's ability to work with a 4K (although, as your demo showed, still recording only at 1080p). So easily worth a punt for the very low price. There is one aspect of the devices that I feel would be very useful, especially to gamers wishing to record their time whilst playing is whether any of them show any appreciable lag that would make real time gaming possible or not.

    • @PE4Doers
      @PE4Doers  3 роки тому

      I wish I could have 'accurately' measured the device 'lag' (in microseconds), unfortunately I have not had a working duel-trace Oscilloscope for a number of years (which I may change if enough people are interested in Electrical Engineer DYI projects), which would have also required my bread-boarding of an HDMI cable.
      I have seen other online videos come up with Lag measurements, however it appears to me that they a mostly estimates done by comparing screen captures between what is believed to have a 'known' lag to the device being tested. In my opinion that is prone to an error of at least 20% from the research I did leading up to both videos I created on these low-cost capture devices. For example, I have the elgato 4K60 pro that advertises a specific lag time, but if you read the fine-print, they have a large number of conditions (such as PC performance) that get in the way of that being highly accurate.
      I did see someone using Games to provide the estimated lag, but I have to question the accuracy of those estimates not knowing all the other factors the software is considering in the calculation, or, to be honest, the integrity of some of those estimates due to market pressures.
      I apologize if this response doesn't help very much, however I intentionally decided to leave information like 'lag' out of my videos, not having the equipment I would have to trusted to perform the testing accurately, then defending those results.

    • @billfreeman5201
      @billfreeman5201 3 роки тому

      @@PE4Doers Thanks for the response. Even a personal demonstration base on your own experience of the feel of lag would be useful to give some indication of whether there is a lot or not,

    I received the newer card (without cable) today - costing 13 Euro (15 USD) including postage. I get very high quality video from my camcorder HDMI. It gives many times better colour, sharpness and contrast than my webcam. The only drawback I have at present is that the video seems to be maybe 300-400ms delayed compared to the audio from my USB headset microphone. I guess I could plug a microphone into my webcam to get audio also via HDMI, but will probably stick with the headset microphone for now as it works well.
    Maybe the delayed video is because of my PC's hardware? I haven't found any way to reduce the default video quality or resolution - maybe that could reduce the bandwidth/processing requirements and so reduce the video delay?
    Thanks for the great videos!

    • @PE4Doers

    Just a remark, for the test it will be more "scientific" to have testing the device on the same USB 3.0 port, because (even if not the seem case here) using an other USB 3.0 port could alterate the result.

    • @PE4Doers
      @PE4Doers  3 роки тому

      I believe the advertisement on the one with the 'Blue' USB connector is clearly false. When I tested it, I could only get throughput up to USB 2.0 specs. However, both worked 'Exactly' the same in terms of resolution and FPS. I believe this video shows they have the same single chip doing all the work - despite what other reviewers said. The test you need to question most severely is the measured latency. I was unable to perform a fully scientific test, however I believe the latency to be between 100 and 160 ms. Both devices fell within that range based on my 'Dead Reckoning' method of measurement (comparing screens in a video editor frame by frame, and comparing them to my camera HDMI output that is 'advertised' as being 90 ms - not scientific at all). If I had a modern dual-trace logic analyzer of even an oscilloscope - like I had in Electrical Engineering labs - I could have come up with a scientific measurement. Using an estimate from a game (which I believe some others used) has too many variables, such as the system load and interrupt handler rates at any specific moment.

As I mentioned more than once in this video, I was becoming concerned that some of my viewers were spending or about to spend more than they had to for this device. It was clear to me when I did my research before ordering the first one that they were likely 'exactly' the same. One company probably created it, fabricated a few million manufactured, then sold to many other companies.

    Is there a cheap capture card that does a good job of capturing a Windows desktop? I bought one of the plastic PH4SBD units but although it works, I found everything was a bit blurry and lacking definition, which maybe you wouldn’t notice capturing video, but very noticeable for icons, text, etc.
    I ordered one of the metal units (coming tomorrow), having seen good reviews from others on UA-cam but having seen your video, I’m now expecting the results to be the same. Do you know if the Elgato Camlink, or any other USB capture card gives a crisp image? May have to spend £120 to get a decent product instead of wasting my time and money on these cheap ones!

      The elgato card is definitely top of the line. I may get one myself once I start live streaming (and I have some more funds fo such purchases). These cards are low end and will have some quirks - a clear case of 'You Get What You Paid For'. I kept mine just as a backup, or if a particular video or event I am doing needs another 'higher quality' USB camera.

    I absolutely see what you mean about the frame rate, and agree it would be better if the manufacturer(s) labeled them as 30fps units. But I would have to disagree that the two were the same when it comes to video quality. As I replay your side by side comparison, it seem quite clear to me that the video to the right has much greater detail than the video on the left. Take particular note of the skin texture between the two. For me, the greater detail would easily warrant paying the extra $15.

    • @PE4Doers
      @PE4Doers  3 роки тому

      I appreciate you comment and observations. I still honestly believe they use the same logic chip inside those devices. I have also noticed that recent ads of the two units have actually swapped prices, with the one I spent the extra $25 on dropping to just $18, while the the cheaper one that purchased, is now over $25. I wish it was my video that could have had that impact on the market, however my 10K views pails in comparison to the views other reviewers have had after looking at these two video devices
      One other thing to consider = In addition to how they worked for me when I was comparing them, I also completed some research on how embedded identifiers are established on smart USB devices, and based on that, along with my skepticism that the two identifiers reported to OBS could match 'exactly' by pure coincidence, I am 99.7% sure (three Standard deviations) of that hypothesis.
      I do take you opinion seriously however, so I went back and viewed the original source files for the two outputs. To me they look close enough on both of my 4K monitors, but that is obviously my opinion only.

    • @PE4Doers
      @PE4Doers  3 роки тому

      As an additional follow-up, I just watched the raw video clips (all three directly from OBS) several time - once again - and the only things I've noticed is that: 1) My body body is slightly shifted from one low-cost card to the other, which changed the camera exposure by about 8% (per my editing S/W), which makes that clip slightly darker, so I bumped up the exposure on the editor and there is no other perceptible difference; and 2) that the version from the elgato 4K60 capture card definitely has better color and clarity over the other two.

    They are exactly the same, worth the money, but not 60fps or USB 3.0. Over here, the metal case one is less expensive. AKA as the Can't-Link. However, it's a lottery as to what the latency is as some of them have really low latency under 50ms, and some have ones over 100ms - it isn't consistent between the same model. Great capture card for cheap, but unfortunately mislabeled and mismarketed. If they labelled it for what it was - 1080p@30fps and USB 2.0, it would still be a steal.

    • @PE4Doers
      @PE4Doers  3 роки тому

      I fully agree, they are the same device, as my testing indicated. I did not attempt a latency measurement however due to testing equipment limitations I currently have.
      How did you check the latency?

    • @boxfan6656
      @boxfan6656 3 роки тому

      Some channels actually have measured latency on this device and many others. EposVox - who was actually the first one who turned me onto this card has an extensive compilation of latency numbers for over a hundered different cards, including these two. The way I check latency is to have my HDR-CX handycam go into a 4-way splitter, then each feed on the splitter goes into a different capture card. Then I raise my hand and see which feed has the hand go up first - also it's possible to record in OBS and playback later like you did with the "dancing fingers". Epos actually did find one of the 2.0 versions of this cheap card with a very low latency. In my case, my Ripsaw HD wins. The USB 3.0 labelled one still looks good upon record, but the Ripsaw is better for live monitoring only due to the latency. The USB 3.0 is still a great deal even though it is mislabeled as USB 3.0 and 60fps. There was no reason for them to try to fool people with the mislabeling as it is still worth more than it costs, given today's market prices even if it is only USB 2.0 and 1080p 30fps and marginally inferior quality wise to my $160 card.

Also, they are only USB 2.0, even though one of them shows a 'Blue' USB connector. In addition, if you tried to feed a 4K signal into either of them you would only get a blank output screen. The point of this video was to show that they have 'exactly' the same controller chip, which I believe my tests did show that as being fact - even though one sells for twice the price. I do use one of them (having returned the more expensive one) quite often when I have Zoom meetings and training classes - if that helps.

    Poor Example. Couple notes here. Elgato has additional software that controls the core drivers, setting desired framerates and resolutions for "default" usage. Depending on your Elgato Capture Card, this may be 1080p 60fps, 4k 30fps, or even 720p 60fps. You don't have any software for managing your alternative capture cards. I recommend manually changing the resolution and framerates when setting up the capture source. Next, 3 different recordings isn't a great option for comparison videos past the double-frame buffering due to a 30fps to 60fps video stream. Since it is a capture card, give it a static pre-recorded 60fps video on another HDMI device (a monitor connected to the computer, another computer, console, etc) to not only support the framerate claims (which I don't doubt given this example) but also quality differences between capture cards. Alternatively, recording a clock or stopwatch with milliseconds is also an okay option. A few devices (cameras are notorious for it) will add motion blur frames to force 60fps when it can only capture 30fps. Probably irrelevant for the current setup, but is an important thing to test against future forward. Final note, both capture cards list 60fps for 720p, not 1080p. Would probably not have made this post if the video were listed as something more akin to "budget capture card framerate tests" rather than "price / perf testing"

    If you check the specs on the devices it clearly states that it can ingest 1080p60 but will output only 1080p30. However, it can also output 720p60 if you need 60fps.

      So it does do 1080p 60fps. Or, at least the one we received is doing it. (not so much with live streaming but we have done a few 1080p 60fps live stream. We have done successful captures with different capture software. We feel it optimizes at 48 fps with our hardware used. It is not to say that it is doing sustained 60fps, but it is doing greater than 30 fps at 1080p.
      We reviewed 1 sec 60 images and found that the majority of them are different cells, assume the video feed has not dropped or is producing at least 60 or greater frames per second. We feel the limiting factor is that it is not running USB 3.0 as such the device itself will push the limits based on hardware. Although we have tested with both 2/4 and 4/8 core systems and there is not a huge difference.
      For the price the image quality and the even doing greater than 1080p ie 2k resolution display it is a great buy.

      I have gotten so many comments and emails on this (with the original and video along with this one) that it is mind-boggling. I have also noticed that a couple of other UA-camrs (with much larger audiences than I have) have also been dealing with it. From what I can tell however, I am the only one that 'admits' they are the same except for the packaging (and the color of the USB internal plastic piece). My guess is that accepting the fact that a person paid more than they could have is just too hard to let go - it's water under the bridge (sunk cost, unless you have free returns available). I plan on eventually paying the premium to support 40K60 (an a minimum 4K30), to buy one of the top-line devices. I will use the one I still have (having returned the expensive one) as a 'stop gap' and a backup.

      I really did not notice that. The key thing is that the chips in both identified themselves to OBS 'exactly' the same, which is strong evidence that they use the same chip. WOW, you got a great deal. I could not find it less than $30 when I was looking for it. I am all over UA-cam trying to figure out how much TIME a video capture card will record... even at 40 fps & 4k ~ I just need some kind of base from where to begin.
    It 8s for a cheap security camera... but I don't know what length of thy time zi can record... 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 2 hours... is it even worth investing any $ in at all. These sites all use the word TIME but no one even tries to reveal it. It's pretty messed up when you only need a simple answer but absolutely no answer Revelation to your understanding is given.

      The only thing I can think of to 'possibly' help, is describe how much space my videos use at 4K, 30fps.
      The number I experience for that resolution and speed is 5min, 40secs, take up just about 4gig of space on my storage drives. It seem very consistent for me using three different 4K cameras. I am looking at a 4K video file right now that is almost exactly 1gig in size and it's runs 1min, 26secs, at 4K, 30fps.
      I guess if I were trying to size a video capture device with internal storage, I would start with the 1gig example I just described. Of course you would have to tweak the math for a different FPS value.
      I hope that helps.

    So great news, the plain paper box one works as advertised. Or, at least the one I got. We just upload the first long video that shows the capture card in action with a popular PS4 game using a PS4 for the HDMI source. ua-cam.com/video/zzsJFj_fV2E/v-deo.html
    We have an old Elgato device in our archives for capture and had looked at the possible cost of over 200 USD/UROS for a update capture card. That was until we started to see these USB small footprint ones.
    Your review was so great, and we were a bit scared that the device was not going to be as advertised and only do 30 fps. But to our great joy it does capture at 60 fps if the source video also is produced at 60 fps or greater.
    We are going to do a 4K test soon too, but because we mostly produce 30fps HD content, this device will fit in just fine to our tools.

    As a professional engineer with certifications in addition to yours, plus 40 years experience in designing electronic communications and computation systems, I respectfully disagree that your test is conclusive. You may be correct in your assertion that the device are identical intenallly, but you didn't prove it.
    That the firmware string of two devices identifies itself as the same doesn't mean that the hardware is identical. There is not a comprehensive standard followed by all device makers for identifying HDMI device capability in band. What exists is a simple handshake to identify the class of device.
    Consider that a Windows 11 PC may identify the processor base speed but not the turbo speed. It may not know what the processor chip's capabilites are and require those to be enabled through the BIOS. The capability of the graphics card may not be exploitable by the OS without the card maker's driver to enable the graphics processor. Similarly, the capture card software which you deigned to examine may be required to change the operating mode of the hardware.
    Testing that software could be easily accomplished at no risk to a test computer running a virtual instance of a computer environment. Modern processors are much faster than the data rate of 1080p/60Hz of your limited motion test and wouldnlt be a test factor. Only if you were using a complex test scene where the majority of the image was in constant change would the computer be a factor in testing maximum capability of a video adapter.

      You present a very interesting argument.
      I do have to say however, that I was somewhat limited in my ability to be 100% certain that the devices are, or are not, the same.
      If I were doing a full electrical engineering review I would have requested access to any schematics, logic diagrams, or embedded micro code source to have that level of certainty.
      I would say however, that there are facts that are inescapably supportive of my determination. For example, the alternative would have been if some competitive company had reverse engineered the electronic circuitry and design. If that were truly the case however, I have my professional doubts they would have used the same device ID text as the one device they were copying. That would be somewhat incriminating should the matter ever found its way to a legal case, since the text would have been quite easy to modify.
      Also, I am intrigued at your supposition that using virtual computer environments would have provided improved evaluation results. I have learned (as most computer engineers have) that virtualization provides improved performance optimization of multi-threaded CPU designs, however they would never exceed the performance of a single embedded (usually a discrete logic based) CPU.
      I do pride myself on being 100% open-minded however, so I would love the opportunity to discuss this further with you in a Live Collaboration Stream. If you are amenable to that, please reach out to me through my UA-cam contact information.

Few things to reinforce: The units are not USB 3, connectors might be(this is true on most advertised USB 3 capture devices under 30.00USD). Can it capture 4k and 60fps, well yes to some degree in real world such as OBS 48FBS there lower resolution 60FS is there, 4k only about 7 to 12 fps.
