Using "like" as a filler word too much is looked down on sometimes in the US, but using "like" as a substitute for "for example" is no problem. This is such a helpful lesson!

text books often seek to teach national speech i.e. speech as it is used nationwide, German e.g. has a fair number of local words which are considered slang and never get taught in textbooks. If I said in berlin "ikle will ne schrippe" everyone would know what i mean
i suspect google translate would have no idea.
so maybe zhu fan is local to Taiwan?
just ran it through my translator and yeah google is dumb i just wanted a roll lol.
Good one. There are also huge differences between textbooks, I think 當代中文 is the best choice and you actually would find most of the colloquial phrases from the video in there. Some other textbooks are really outdated/unnatural but for some reason still used by schools as for my experience (just wondering why though..)
Needless to say, the best choice is always this Channel! ;))
Thanks for the video! This is really helpful for me because a lot of my friends speak more textbook-like, probably because they go to Chinese schools and things like that. My whole family's Taiwanese and I've never been formally taught how to speak Mandarin formally so I've just picked up the natural/everyday language instead. This should make it easier for me to understand my friends now haha. It's also so relieving to hear someone with a Taiwanese accent teaching since a bunch of other teachers on UA-cam don't sound like what I'm used to at home if that makes sense.

表演得太棒了 or 表演太棒了 or 這表演太棒了 聽起來比較口語 用好的話聽起來有那麼一點正式. 也可以說太扯了 不過謹慎使用說話的語調可能讓意思完全相反
Lao Shi, I may have question, I have learned mandarin when I was elementary school for 5 years. I can write, speak,read and listening Mandarin language. But because I have rarely use mandarin, now I'm lacking those skill.
I used to write Mandarin in simplified word. My question is, is it wrong to use simplified word ?
Good question! I won’t say it’s wrong but if your goal is clear, you want to learn Taiwanese mandarin, then you definitely should go with the right materials, which should be traditional characters, taiwanese culture, taiwanese point of views…which will be different if you use simplified characters. Plus using traditional characters can help you communicate better with Taiwanese friends. We feel you’re addressing to us:)

課本只會出現「做飯」，我的猜測是：中國北方基本上都說「做飯」，而華語的來源基本上就是中國北方，所以課本才會這麼寫。
只是，既然是台灣的華語課本，我也覺得應該配合台灣的習慣用語，畢竟這是教台灣華語的課本。
而且，中國北方很常用「疼」，台灣卻幾乎沒有人用「疼」來表達身體上不舒服的感受，只會表達「疼惜」的意思。這就是有趣的地方。

A good lecture but unfortunately marred by the type of systemic error most other Chinese language teachers keep making: you focus on English rather than on Chinese; you teach Chinese wrapped into English rather than Chinese focused on Chinese only. This is unhelpful for (at least) two reasons: (i) you remove the word-by-word map between the two languages (however incongruous this may sometimes be) and a possibility for the learners of Chinese to glean onto how Chinese think and express their thoughts, and (ii) not everyone who is trying to learn Chinese is a native English speaker (and thinking in English). We are not infants trying to learn their first language; we are adults with experienced and well structured mental processes of learning. We need to understand the thought behind the words, rather than senselessly parrot a sentence from a book, a lecture or a video clip. Do you understand what I am trying to say here? Please, de-Americanize your Chinese and make it more true Chinese. Thank you.
