This helped me so much. For anyone interested,i tought 2 horses to lay down using this method, one did his first laydown after 7 weeks and the other got it in just over 4 weeks, and my friend tried it on her 2 horses, one got it in just under a month, the other took about 5 weeks.
its amazing that you can do this / that the horse is comfortable enough with you to do it. Unfortunately i lost my horse to a mystery illness 7 years ago not long after i fell while on a riding lesson at a school and broke my back and pelvis. its taken me a long time to get over. Any how i just got a job at a riding school which i start next week, so ive been watching horse videos back to back non stop to get ready. i think what you do is the stuff dreams are made of ur so lucky : )
Thank you for this video! I watched and tried your first tutorial on asking to lie down but we weren't getting anywhere. Found this video, and this morning my boy lay down after 7 weeks or training!
Wow! It's incredible how much patience you have and how much time you gave your horse to understand! This is absolutely amazing and I'll definitely try it out sometime
So the days you were working with him on the 'lay down', did you do any other work too or only this exercise to get him to understand it easier/quicker? Btw really helpful video, thank u so much! ♥
This is great! Really comprehensive explanation of the process. Has helped me build trust and confidence with my horses. I abandoned the whip, though- found that for my animals I got a better response touching lightly with my bare hands and then simply pointing once they understood what response I wanted from the pressure. Thanks, keep up the good work.
Thanks so much! I have looked up and tried several methods and so far the only one I got that did anything without using ropes was teaching him to kneel but I need to cradle his leg so he trusts that I won't drop him. :P Tried ropes, neither of us like it. He's a really smart, eager old boy and LOVES playing "touch" with the whip. Point and click per say. Thanks so much for the tutorial. I'm gonna try it out. I ride bareback so it would be nice to have a spare way to get on without needing a fence all the time. :3
excellent video and excellent information. I have a donkey who protects my goats and i would like to teach him some of these things. He is very intelligent and learns quickly, but although I've had him since he was a baby, he doesn't trust me 100% because I've never attempted to interact with him other than food and water. But now that he is almost 3, I think it's time to train him. I only wish I had started when he was a baby. I'll be looking forward to your videos.
You can ask your horse lie down from under saddle or mounted bareback using the same process used on the ground. If you’ve done the groundwork properly your horse should catch on pretty quickly. So, first ask for the head drop, then to gather themselves, then to kneel, and finally to lie down. You may use a crop or small whip from the saddle to very gently tap out your commands, you can also use your hands and feet to push the right buttons. Consistency is key. Making sure to give plenty of release any time you get the slightest movement toward the correct response. Allow your horse plenty of time to think things through before you increase pressure. Once you’re horse is responding correctly to your cues, you can start to use less and less pressure or aids to give the commands. I place my hands in my mare’s mane leaving her on a loose rein, and just push my feet forward toward the back of her front legs while sitting deeply in the saddle or bareback. I don’t have to touch her at all any more, she drops that head, gathers herself and lays down happily. Remember to listen to your horse, don’t let them become agitated, asking a horse to lay down is not something that is natural for them, they have to trust you, it leaves them very vulnerable from their prey animal perspective. Always go back to something your horse if comfortable with if they express confusion, frustration or pain. It’s hard on their joints getting up and down with a rider so be sure you’re balanced and making yourself an easy load for them to bare.
kara leigh baker this is really good, but just one adjustment, you should never make your horse get up with you on there back, maybe with the exception of a very small light person on a draft. It's way too tough on there joints, and it's not worth it just to do a cool trick.
thank you for this tutorial, i didn't know there was another way to do this. I was taught to do this with a rope around the ankle that goes around their bellies like a cinch, which, I felt, was a bit too brutal. Sure it's a faster way of doing it, but I never really liked doing it that way. Now I have another option. Again, Thank you.
Love this, what a great explination. Do you have any advice for a horse who shows zero response to having their belly tapped to "gather"? My horse lowers his head, and keeps it low while popping his front leg, but I am struggling to get any response from prompting him to even slightly move his hind legs.
The horse I ride for my lessons, Ziggy, likes to learn with truly no ropes, like not even a halter, he just follows me around 😂 I’m going to try this, but with pure respect, no treats, just hugs and kisses and other rewards, and no whip, just my hands, and from other encounters with other times with Ziggy, I’m sure it’ll work with just my hands 😄
this is really helpfull! i really wanna do liberty now but i dont own my own horse :( i might try to ask my friend if i could use her calm, very friendly, well behaved horse.... although its not a lesson horse..... what do you think i should do?
Love this method. Can’t stand watching people pull their horses over with ropes. You would think they would want their horse to enjoy the trick, not be forced!
hi my horse is not responding to the tap on belly he donst even move do u know why? love ur videos they are awesome I'm gonna try some other tricks to see if he gets it☺☺
I know this is late but hopefully someone will read this: I tried this today with a pony I have to look after and she collected only the third time I asked her to do so...i already tried to teach her to lay down in lot of different ways but with no results, then with this method she collected immediately. Just want to thank you and tell everybody how this method is helpful:3
Hi there, love the videos. I have tried your particular methods with little success. My problem is that my horse (23 year old Percheron gelding) is borderline bombproof. Very little phases him. I tried the tickling the belly/back legs to get him in the haunches going down position and he just stands there waiting patiently. @_@ Any suggestions? I have had positive outcomes with teaching him to kneel by putting his head between his legs, just wish I could take it further... or at least get him to hold that pose. Thanks for reading and thanks for your time. :)
Hi! You had teaches this horse to lay down since the beginning in this video? I have so many doubts, can you help me? I got a 3 years-old quarter mile horse from my uncle, can I teach him to lay down? How many times by day I need try teach him and for how long?
I enjoy your techniques very much. My boy now does spanish walk and bows. The one thing I ask is after your training, you don't give us your cue for them to perform the action you've taught. what is your cue when you are riding...to bow, to spanish walk? Many thanks!
Cue for bow in the saddle is just tapping the canon bone and asking the horse to go a bit back. For Spanish walk on the ground is touching on the chest with the whip or holding it in front. Under saddle I touch on the shoulder with the whip but eventually it’s just from collecting the walk and alternating weighting my seat bones. Hope this helps!
I think I'll try this...my big guy bows with his feet out front but he's so tall it's hard to mount even with a steady object like the trailer!!! I really want to teach him this so he can carry my mom who can't get on n off without lots of help so this would be helpful!!!
Hi I'm Olive and I'm having some issues with my horse Comanche, he is very scared (because of previous owners) of the whip and I've tried many desensitizing methods, but none seem to be affective, what do you suggest would be best for me to do? Because he is getting very out of hand, and unsafe.
I know this might be a stupid question but i have an older horse (23 years old) would this be ok for him to do? He is in quite nice shape and jumps 2’3. I just wouldnt want to try anything that may hurt him
OreoLiberty is it normal for your horse to not respond to the taping of the whip at first ? I have a very willing horse she already no's how to bow perfectly. I taught her first day within 10min use ing your method.... She no's how to put her head down but when I tap her belly or back of her knees she just stands there lol ?? Does it take some time before they move there legs ?
You should do a tutorial on laying down when mounted, Spanish walk when mounted, and another Liberty video! I'm gonna try the Liberty out as soon as possible! If you let me know what your Instagram is, I'll tag you on the pictures and videos that I'll be taking! My Instagram is @eq_scuses @right_lead_love and @cbeventing7
Hey I really want to teach my horse how to lie down on command X does the horse get confused when the farrier picks up his Hooves or is it only when you tap with the whip behind the leg
I got to the point where my horse will bring the back legs in close with her head down but when I ask for her to pop the front legs, she only steps one or the leg other forward. Do i reward for that too or is that teaching the wrong thing?? We've been working on it about 4x a week for the past month since those are the only days I can be at the barn due to corona. Is it normal to take that long? I feel like i've been trying forever!
@oreoliberty hey I love your videos but I have a problem when I ride bareback my horse tucks his head between his legs and leaps forward trying to get me off and I fell off over 5 times the other day when he did this. I would really love to ride tackles but I feel like he would just try and get me off have you got any ways to solve this thanks xx
I'm afraid that my horse will just lie down even though I don't give him the cue but I really want to teach him to lie down. Should I try to teach him?
Hello! I tried to teach my mare to lie down, but I can not because I had already taught her to take the Spanish step and so she does not understand that she must lie down, in fact she always does the Spanish step ... how can I do?
My horse also tried walking forward instead of mpvong the back legs in, I started doing it with her facing a wall so that it eliminated that option for her and she figured it out quickly after! Now we can do it anywhere off the wall and she does not walk forward
Nicole Gordon yeah that's super annoying... my horse does the same thing. I can tap and tap and tap and she doesn't even attempt to move! Not even a flinch.
Okay so my horse is insanely smart but I've been doing this for 2 weeks and my horse still has not had any reaction what so ever to me tapping his belly or even the back of his legs..I dont know what more to do to try and get his back legs to gather

very nice to see how much patience you have and reward the little steps! Thanks for sharing!

happy to see no ropes - real horsemanship = reaching understanding. also love ur indoor roundpen : )
D T thank you!! I wish that was my round pen!!! This is the barn I used to work at, unfortunately we only have an outdoor arena at our place 😝
its amazing that you can do this / that the horse is comfortable enough with you to do it. This was like the best lay-down tutorial ive ever seen :')👏
Thank you for this video! I watched and tried your first tutorial on asking to lie down but we weren't getting anywhere. Found this video, and this morning my boy lay down after 7 weeks or training!
Your the 1st person I've subscribed to and I've had a UA-cam account for One Year
LOVE IT!! You are so gentle and you can see that the horse really trusts you! Well done!
Terrific method. Can't wait to start when the snow melts in March!
That is a beautiful arena you are working in!
Thanks for making this!! I'm definitely going to teach my horse to lay down now :)
So so happy you did a remake! I understand now! So excited to start this training
Wow! It's incredible how much patience you have and how much time you gave your horse to understand! This is absolutely amazing and I'll definitely try it out sometime
Thanks so much for these videos they really help and are super appreciated. Every Time one pops up I get so excited.
Love your round pen, can you PLEASE do more tutorials?
Thank you so so much!!!! I have been trying to find a vid that worked and I FINALLY found it!!! Thank you so so sooo much

Your indoor round pen is to DIE for 😮
You are so patient and I would love to be able to do what you do, your verging inspiring to me and I love your channel!! 😁

I really like the way you teach your horses and us to teach our horses :D Keep making this kind of videos!?
I try this on my horse and it Tok me 5 weeks. Ps I love how you teach you horses
Awesome! Thank you very much for this video. This is all I need, you perfectly explained the whole thing! Gonna try this method 😍❤️
How do you get them to lie down while your riding them? You should do a vid. Also u should do more liberty videos. Pleaseeeee
Jennesa G yes plz
i want a video for this too!

Just like with cats or young children, it's the small steps and the rewards that do the trick. You'll make a wonderful mother one day!
THANK YOU! I'll try it next week❤
Could you do, teach your horse to hug with his leg and head please xx
Jade Roberts yes plz
Love these videos. Do you teach one trick at a time or are you working on multiple things at a time with the horses?
I usually work on multiple at a time to keep it interesting!

this is inspiring well done!!
Please post more and do more tutorials xx
Your training videos have really helped me in training my young horse. What type of whip do you use? @Oreoliberty
I'm trying to teach my unpredictable chestnut mare, who has 0 patience
How is it going?
You great with horses ^:
Hi! You had teaches this horse to lay down since the beginning in this video? I have so many doubts, can you help me? I got a 3 years-old quarter mile horse from my uncle, can I teach him to lay down? How many times by day I need try teach him and for how long?

i love your way how you teach your horses to lay down
I know this is old, but that sounds like a lot of pressure on the joints to make a pregnant mare lie down over and over again 🙈
hello i cant wait to try this on my 3 horses but i was just wondering if this works the same with miniatures
It would be easier for them, as they are smaller and lower to the ground. xx
I think I'll try this...my big guy bows with his feet out front but he's so tall it's hard to mount even with a steady object like the trailer!!! I really want to teach him this so he can carry my mom who can't get on n off without lots of help so this would be helpful!!!
What do I do if my pony does have any response to the leg/belly tapping?
thank you

Once I noticed him plowing the ground with his nose I couldn't not keep watching his face lol

Honestly i follow the Clinton Anderson method but this is awesome
Me too haha
Same!
@Allyson McCormack he has not! Clinton has a good way of getting horses to respond. Do I agree with everything, No. But still. He is pretty good!
You should do a tutorial on laying down when mounted, Spanish walk when mounted, and another Liberty video! I'm gonna try the Liberty out as soon as possible! Hey I really want to teach my horse how to lie down on command X does the horse get confused when the farrier picks up his Hooves or is it only when you tap with the whip behind the leg
Would a stall be a good place to teach them to lay down?
im a little confused.. are you tapping the horses leg, or the belly?

hey! i really want to learn liberty and free/bitless riding but i don't have a horse. i live in the sac ca area and im fourteen. any recomendations?
@oreoliberty hey I love your videos but I have a problem when I ride bareback my horse tucks his head between his legs and leaps forward trying to get me off and I fell off over 5 times the other day when he did this. Where are you from? I love your voice! x
How do you get them to lie down with you on them????
great video I have a 12 or 13 year old could I teach him to do this
Jean Clayton years sure can teach any horse to do this
I'm afraid that my horse will just lie down even though I don't give him the cue but I really want to teach him to lie down.
Should I try to teach him?
How many times a day do you work with your horse?
Hello! I tried to teach my mare to lie down, but I can not because I had already taught her to take the Spanish step and so she does not understand that she must lie down, in fact she always does the Spanish step ... how can I do?
What do I do if my horse takes the belly tapping as a cue to move forward, and leg tapping as a cue to move backwards
My horse also tried walking forward instead of mpvong the back legs in, I started doing it with her facing a wall so that it eliminated that option for her and she figured it out quickly after! Now we can do it anywhere off the wall and she does not walk forward
What do I do if my pony Chester doesn't move a single step in response to the leg/belly tapping and I've been doing it for about 5 minutes
Nicole Gordon yeah that's super annoying... my horse does the same thing. I can tap and tap and tap and she doesn't even attempt to move! Not even a flinch.
How do you get them to stand up after
Okay so my horse is insanely smart but I've been doing this for 2 weeks and my horse still has not had any reaction what so ever to me tapping his belly or even the back of his legs..I dont know what more to do to try and get his back legs to gather
how many time to do the horse this ?
Is it okay if I try to learn my foal this?
What if your horse starts to panic? Mine idk...he’s a rescue so maybe that’s why...
When u tap under the belly. R u tapping the front legs or the belly? I cant tell from the video
Same
+Anastoey Orangeburg You can see if you look very closely that she taps his belly, up until when she explains going down onto his knees. The whip is going up and down to the belly instead of going side to side like you would do if you tap the legs. But when she is talking about going down to the knees she taps his leg. Hope this helped!
She's doing both :)
Under belly
What type of reward do you use
Libby Clark you would give them a treat
you can check some kinds of horses on my profile, they are awesome and beautiful
how do u do that under saddle
How to teach your horse to LAY DOWN [NO ROPES] (Re Explained)
The horse I have can sit down like a dog and lying down, I just wanted to known how the person did it
My horse is backing up everytime I tap her front legs
:D
it would better if you used correct grammar - in this sentence it should be "lie" not "lay".
Hi! You had teaches this horse to lay down since the beginning in this video? I have so many doubts, can you help me? I got a 3 years-old quarter mile horse from my uncle, can I teach him to lay down? How many times by day I need try teach him and for how long?
20 mins a day every day I heard in video
+haha you don't know me thank you!
