Finally someone who explained in detail - my issue was exactly how to have the right hand on it .. I hope I’m holding it right now.. do you have a video teaching bending? I tried the techniques I learned of from other posts, but I can’t apply it to actually achieve the bend :(
Hi, Tomlin... I'm a novice LEFTY who feels much more comfortable with the harp in my RIGHT hand, cupping with my left hand for solid seals and stronger wah-wahs. Acceptable if it helps me progress through your videos more successfully?
I just started today and just learned Piano Man. I'm stoked, but all I have is a 12 hole harmonica that was my grandmom's. My right hand can't cup entire device. Does this change being able to do blues effects and any tips how to adjust?
While playing I figured out another way of holding instrument it gives me more control in sliding, moving frome hole to hole, better warbles BUT it makes me almost unable to make wah-wahs. If I figure out how to wah-wah in that way is it good to find own way to hold harmonica? I am asking because I don`t want to have bad habits and miss some oportunity to progress. Is that 'classic' way to hold instrument only good way for some reasons?
Hi Jakub, as long as you have good control of the instrument and can do all the techniques you want to then it doesn't matter how you hold the harmonica. ;-)
Should the harmonica be parallel ? It seems to me if it is not it will ruin the shape of your mouth :) and I also feel today that it is more leaky if it is not parallel
I seem to be getting my harp not straight .... it's angled up to the right, down to the left. I think its because i dont seem to feel comfortable bending my left wrist (i think its too straight not bernt) and therefore my left thumb base "collapses" down onto the palm of my right hand. Is this wrong? I assume so because either my harp doesn't sit straight or i have to really bend my right wrist uncomfortably. Any help / ideas? (anyone, not necc. Tomlin)
Finally got the relaxed-lips-deep-mouth-upward-tilt lip purse method to work well, and now it interferes with this way of holding the harmonica. Nose slides across my fingers. I can live with that, but it seems strange. Guess I'm too deep. LOL
yes hold in your left......this what a left-handed person like myself would do...and did.......this is also known as PLAYING LEFT HANDED.........HOLDING IN YOUR RIGHT IS right handed playing........no matter what "handed" the person is..... the hand holding it determines the "handed" of the playing.......dont let anyone tell you any different......which will happen......I hold in my left and have been told that that is right handed playing..........bull! most people and therefore most players are right handed....these right handed freak of nature backward players...think that they can call the proper way to play harp.....in your left.....as right-handed playing!...right handed people not used to reversing and using their opposite hand have named the type of playing after themselves lol.....no offense right handers!.....btw bike travel.........try your utmost to do it left-handed.......but if you feel more comfortable playing right then do it put find a way to cup the low notes when amplifying...........there are numerous right handed awesome players.....sonny Terry Carey bell.......William Clarke.......Paul Butterfield was a left-handed person but played right handed.........maybe you are the next Paul Butterfield?
im past the beginner phase of playing......but i appreciate you telling people that although players may choose a different way .....the proper way of holding is in your left hand...........i might caution everyone to stick with tomlin for lessons and questions..........why ? because for example there are 2 very popular harmonica sites/blogs that dont teach the proper way........worse still both of these alleged places of harmonica learning.....actually call holding the harp in your lefthand is right handed playing and holding in your right hand is referred to as left handed playing............?????????? what kind of crazy is that....? so you newbies and intrmeadiate players stick with tomlin......he is the best on youtube.......thanks tomlin

Men, really good videos, i starting to learn how to play and ur videos helping me a lot! Greetings from Chile!
Thank you that helped out a lot sounds better to.
When you've been playing Harmonica for months and figure out that you've been holding the harp with the wrong hand the whole time...
That's ok John - an easy fix :-)
fucking exactly. I never even thought about it.
Tell that to Sonny Terry. He held his harp backwards. He was blind.

Thank you for the awesome lessons. I love the backing track. Do you have any links or leads to it?

Hi Tomlin. I'm playing in the right position and the sound is fine, but my left hand hurts after playing. What could I be doing wrong?
Should the harmonica be parallel ? It seems to me if it is not it will ruin the shape of your mouth :) and I also feel today that it is more leaky if it is not parallel
I don't get to a closed cuped position. Where is that link?

3:07 so even left-handed people should hold the harmonica with the left?

Very helpful. Incidentally, what’s up with the romantic, background music? 😆

I appreciate the recommendation! Thanks :-)
All this time and I’ve held it back assswards! LOL🤡💥
How can i reach you??
by walking up to him
nice!, but what with the porn music in the background?
+greenGrass Lol - I hadn't thought about it like that. It was supposed to be a nice 12 bar blues :-)
Literally everyone says to hold it differently though????
Why is this video so seductive...
Annoying, distracting, too loud, unnecessary guitar playing during your otherwise excellent tutorial, which is much enjoyed.
