      Kevin, you have no idea how much your comments mean to me! Thank YOU so much. I try to just reflect what I do full time and my experience...often 7 days a week. This is stuff I do and help clients with over and over again, and I try to bring that level of experience ..no BS, no fancy descriptive words, no fads...just whitetail strategies that have been proven over decades and that truly work. I appreciate that the message rings true with you and again it means a lot to me! This is one of those comments I read to my wife Diane - she appreciates it too 🙂 So happy this stuff works for you...

    Beem fpllowing your videos but hear little about the west texas area. I have an ATV seeder/spreader, and sprayer, and can purchase a culti packer. What would be a good annual program for this area that has less than 20" of rain on average each year? Looking to start doing a few food plots each spring/fall to improve my hunting spots. This video REALLY spoke volumes because I dont want to invest in large equipment. Would appreciate any advice you can provide. Great stuff....Ty

    Is it good to plant clover & brassicas on the same kill plot?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  3 роки тому

      I prefer something other than clover purely because it lacks the volume and attraction mid season in most locations...but for sure, I often split my kill plots in 1/2 with brassica on 1 side and heavy peas, beans and lime oats on the other. I then tip dress the peas, beans and oats with 200#s of rye about 4-5 weeks later and if the brassica failed due to over browsing or drought I spread the rye there too.

    Jeff,
    Great comments...doing any food plot with any equipment...the key key is spending the time and getting the job done. Each time you put in food plots you learn from your mistakes. After more than 20 yrs., we are still learning from your experience and suggestions. The buckwheat is a few inches already and coming strong with all the rain.
    Thanks for all you have done for us, and do for sportsmen in general!!!!!

      You are very welcome Bob and thank you! I appreciate how hard you have worked on your plan and I believe you are inspiration on here to other clients who may not realize just how much work it takes...but the rewards are so sweet. I love hearing about how things are going! This is what I want you to do this year...I hope that it makes sense?
      I plant my normal crops into the buckwheat...I split my plots and I would like you to as well. This year my personal and what I would recommend to you, will be to broadcast into the standing buckwheat 100#s of peas per acre on one 1/2, combined with 50#s oats around 8/1. Of course it is not a bad thing to use your drill! I will follow up on that 1/2 alone with 200#s of rye roughly labor day, just broadcast over the top at that point. On the other half I will use a straight brassica blend, seeded at the same time as the oats and peas on the other 1/2. I will use no rye on that 1/2. After I seed I crush the buckwheat with the cultipacker. Buckwheat and soybeans are the only seed varieties you can effectively do this with...maybe iron clay peas. Buckwheat is perfect tho because the deer don't eat it as much as soybeans during the summer so it is a great smother crop for weed suppression. If weeds are present within the buckwheat I spray gly...gly also keeps the buckwheat from popping back up and shading out food plot forage germination.
      In the spring I broadcast into the rye (on one 1/2) and into the open ground brassica area on the other 1/2. I like to cut my brassica blend in 1/2 and make up that half by adding 7-8#s of tillage radish into the blend during that 8/1 broadcasting.
      I spread the buckwheat at 50#s per acre between 7-8 weeks from the time I expect to plant my Fall plots. That timing will determine what I do either rye and any Spring weeds. For example if the rye is 18" high I will broadcast buckwheat and mow, or crush and kill with the cultipacker. I don't have a brush hog...so that means crush and spray. If we have a late spring and the rye is only a foot high like this year...I broadcast and spray.
      This is the best method (buckwheat/Fall combo planting) for limiting chemicals while still being able to use high quality plants with small to medium equipment, but you still have to spray at least once per year or your efforts will be severely hampered.
      So many food plotters are trying to not use chemicals with small to medium sized equipment and it isn't practical or effective. Kind of a fad right now based on a lot of inexperienced advice...

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому

      Thanks Jim! I have to be honest but it has been many years since I have used inoculant, for better or worse. Make sure to separate your plots...pure brassica (radish,rape,turnip) on one 1/2...the test on the other. Rye needs to be planted 1 month later than peas and beans...light oats (50#s or less per acre) can be planted early with peas and beans. Make sure to plant a AT LEAST 100#s per acre of peas...200#s per acre of rye around Labor Day.
      Here is a similar recommendation I gave to a client today...

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому

      Hi John, the rye will be too thick for the clover at this point...even spraying alone there would be too much rye debris to seed into. If you could immediately disc or till into the soil that would be great. Rye shouldn't be planted until labor day.
      Seeding heavily peas and beans into it now and mowing over it could work. Depends on the amount of weeds in the stand of rye...of the seed get good seed to soil contact or not.
      Tough call without being there, but discing or tilling would probably be your safest bet, after cutting it...

Rye should also be planted around Labor day. If just opting for rye you can till or disc labor day timing and enjoy free seed.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому

      That's 41% common Glyphosate concentration per acre. I typically use about 12.5 gallons per acre of total water/gly mix. The easiest thing to do is to figure your sprayer coverage rate of gallons per acre at a certain speed (I use 8mph), and then add the mix to your tank and go spray.

    Spray with weed killer wait a 2 weeks then mow it with a trail mower I bought for 150 dollars.
    After that I disk it with an old brinly disk and a craftsman spike harrow that I have less than 100 dollars in both. Usually go over the ground 2-3 passes with this combo. 2 75 lb tractor weights on the disk and on hard ground that will give me about 3/4s of an inch loose soil.
    Spread my seed with an old 3 point electric seeder I modified to fit on the front of the atv that I paid 50 dollars for then run over it with my yard roller I had given to me for hauling off some junk for my neighbor.

    Jeff, I’m always concerned of using too much glyphosate; at 4:45 you mentioned post-emergent. What does that mean? Also, once you spray does it affect future growth of anything? I’m afraid it will affect my plot crop.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому

      Hi Ben, as soon as Glyphosate hits the ground it is nutralized. There is not residual. It only kills when plants are in full leaf and have already emerged - "post emergence". For example you can soak a small tree or bush before it fully buds out and it will not kill it...it has to be full leaf, and then it will kill. You can soak your seeds with it...it will not kill, they have to be emerged and at full leaf. If you add water from a creek that has soil particles, the gly will not work. It will not effect future growth from anything after you spray, other than what has already emerged. It will not stay in soil and kill later plantings. It will not harm seeds. Been using it since 99, a lot. In lots of different ways. But again it is a post emergent. 2-4D is a post emergent broadleaf-only killer. Simazine or atrazine is a pre emergent killer. You can soak growth that has already emerged and it won't kill it. 2-4D has a residual of about 2 weeks in it. Meaning if you spray and then immediately plant beans, buckwheat, peas, clover...it will kill what comes up within that 2 weeks because it has a residual.... glyphosate does not. Simazine and Atrazine stays in the ground for up to 60 days.
      I hope that helps Ben...I personally believe the Round-up scare is overblown, which is why every at and discount tractor store still sells it...why most US farmers still use it...and why we still readily consume food that was grown with it.
      What's crazy is the majority of online social media folks that are shying away from it, have very little experience with it.

    • @benpena2832

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Steve and you are welcome! I actually have seen a very big difference either way. I love long broad shaped Vs. sometimes those cutters are very thin and seed can either get jammed in too deep (rape,turnip,radish,clover,chicory,switch) or not into the ground enough. These broad Vs allow seed to trickle into the center of the V, and it is a more gentle, but heavy push. The Packermaxx HD weighs 450#s with water...650#s with sand. That is VERY heavy for the width.
      Hope that makes sense! I like heavy and a broad V a lot more than skinny, lighter and with thin cutting plates/teeth

    Just made my first food plot this season. 40 yrs of hunting and I decided to give it a shot, ATV with a Fimco Sprayer a homemade Thatching Rake and a Groundhog Disk for the ATV.
    Sprayed weeds and grass 3' tall, came back 3 weeks later and drug the rake for 3-5 hrs at a time for 2 days.
    Came back 2 weeks later and did the same raking for 1 day. Broke ground the following day and spread 100 lbs of Forage Oats and 50 lbs Fall Blend on about 1/2- 3/4 acre in the woods.
    Offshore right now can't wait to get home and see the results

    Hey Jeff, I got a new piece of land in NY acre of open field that has never been planted before. This past summer that field was 5ft high of weeds. I have an atv, Backpack sprayer, and earthway spreader. What should I do? Mow in the spring? Or just spray and once i get a full kill plant buckwheat?

    Just starting out with food plots already have the quad, sprayer,and a pull behind seeder but not able to get bigger equipment to most spots here in Illinois I burnt off the fields they grew back like crazy what should I use to spray these fields to kill it off to seed if I don’t have the disc or tiller?

    I dig your knowledge. I also challenge you to build organic food plots.

      Thank you Curtis and you are welcome! Believe me I would if I could. No chemicals is kind of the "in" thing...but unfortunately really not practical for nearly all food plotters. It severely limits you for what you plant and it is nearly impossible to plant quality forages that actually work to help your herd and hunt. It is kind of a fad right now by a lot of folks online who have very little practical knowledge about food plotting...or experience that is. If I couldn't plant food plots on private land with chemicals I would honestly just purely hunt public land. We had a lease for 4 years we just dropped this year...not totally the reason...but the fact that we couldn't use chemicals made food plotting a waste of time with limited equipment. It sounds good on paper and so eco friendly but it is not practical for 99% of food plotters. I stand for opposite of just feel good practices...I crave effective results per resources spent.
      I am not ashamed to use them 🙂 And both my herd management, the herd and my hunting success is better off for it. After analyzing and then prescribing food plot programs for nearly 900 clients in 25 states and then doing it myself since 95...that is what I have experienced. Over and over again. Sorry to sound so harsh, and I think it is important to limit chemicals when you can, but conserving soil, soil moisture, limited tillage, erosion control, building soil and soil nutrients, quality forages and quality herds based in those quality forages in the Fall...are all goals I want to accomplish with or without chemicals. So much to balance...not just chemical use. Just like the farmers around here who are my neighbors...the bulk of them use chemicals and understand the big picture.
      The Summer buckwheat/Fall quality food combo is a great option-maybe the best for limiting chemicals AND allowing food plotters to efficiently plant high powered, small foodnplots. BUT, you still want to control weeds either once or twice per year. When you do not use chemicals at all, even with that combo...your efforts can lead to some pretty poor plots that really don't have enough power or efficiency to help during the Fall. It's tough and without chemicals food plots can be a waste of time...I've seen that okay out true in every way that you can plant a plot - for decades.
      I'm with you on limiting chemicals, but it just isn't practical unless using big tractors, drills and crimpers. Even then you are very limited for forage varieties. For example if a neighbor of mine was using that system for 20 acres of food plots next door on 200 acres, I feel I could control the daylight movement with chemicals and 3 acres of plots on my land. There just wouldn't be enough diversity next door...I could throw the deer on their land after dark. So far, far less fuel, thousands of dollars less in fertilizer and seed costs, and tens of thousands less needed in equipment...with much higher results. Oh...and a LOT less time spent. It's a balance of all...but high powered and small
      can often be worth several times larger and average. And so much less resources of time and money spent. That's what I work with my clients a lot on...the most bang for their resources spent. Chemicals are NOT the only concern or balance to weigh. So many resources and levels of effectiveness or efficiency to consider.

    Jeff, I see you are using a few different sprayers here. Reading their website, the 2 nozzle says the coverage is 7 feet and the 3 nozzle says 36 feet. Is this what you've experienced? Can you fine tune the 3 nozzle to spray a shorter width?

  • @justinanderson1492

    Awesome video this is exactly what I needed to see for sandy middle ga. So keep it sprayed and limed. After a good spraying I can plant buckwheat in the summer. If they hammer it I can overseed. If it’s 3 foot tall by the time the fall plots are gonna be ready smash it with that cultipacker and seed in rye. One question can you get buckwheat and rye roundup ready so I could kill the weeds everyone in a while

    When you spray 3 times did you have drag over the food plot spot get the dead weeds and grass off? So you get good seed to soil contact

      Great question! I really like the front mount ATV spreader. You can watch your seed being spread and the tow behind is extremely tippy on all but the best of extremely level surfaces. I have a tow behind I have used once...that was enough ☺️

      Hi Mike thank you very much! I just used the Genesis in 2017...wasn't really a good fit for myself, and most of my readers, viewers and clients. GREAT product tho...just a very narrow range of use as it relates to most food plotters resources. I feel a lot more comfortable sticking to my roots 🙂

Or at least find some lease land...

    Great stuff as always. I have a 1979 John Deere and my 4 wheeler.CanAm gets into the small places.Getting ready to RIP up small section of logging road.Borders thick 2nd growth timber with small creek .High weeds on other. See big rub line their year after year.Just have to be patient. Thinking of clover and rye.What do ya think?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому

      Thanks D! Clover and rye is a great logging road shaded area choice. Food equals risk to deer tho, make sure it isn't too much...and that you don't have to use that logging road to access the rest of the land. I see a lot of folks seed their access trails and then spook even more deer because it it.
      I would actually do heavy oats with clover this year...or layered heavy rye. The oats would die out over the Winter and leave you with clover in the Spring. Or you can just cut, kill or disc up the rye in Spring if you go that route.

I’ll have my old Arctic cat in pretty good shape soon. My back and right hip won’t let me walk far anymore and my wheeler comes in handy I know that much be safe out there brother GOD BLESS.
