How to install a speed control on a belt grinder

- I use a belt grinder in most of my knifemaking and leather crafting work, and I wanted it to have more speed control. Here's how I did it.
Here are the listings for the motor and VFD I used:

I say "Variable Feed Drive" but that's a mistake. VFD stands for "Variable Frequency Drive" because it changes the frequency of the three-phase current to control the speed of the motor.
Also, the motor is a Leeson 110145.00, and the VFD is a 1HP KBAC-24D NEMA4X ANALOG VFD 115/230VAC 9987. The website seems to change regularly, so no links stay good, but these part numbers should help you find them.
Thanks for sharing! I’m not that confident in my electrical skills.
Thanks for watching!
Can this be added to any belt sander ? Even cheap ones ?
It will depend on the kind of motor on the grinder. You will have to choose the speed control based on the motor, and some motors cannot use speed controls.
@@DrPronghorn thank you.
Do You have model numbers for the motor and vfd? links to website don't work. Thanks

Nice conversion! You happen to have part# for speed controller?
Yes, check one of the other comments, where I've put in the speed controller and motor part numbers. I'll go and pin it now.
It saying part no longer available. I think it crossed the number to another one. But looking at your install it’s awesome how 3 phase going 120v and speed controlled.👍 I’m definitely a subscriber now!
@@DrPronghorn I wonder if you can add a kbac 24d to the Kalamazoo belt sander? Would be nice to control speed.
Hi and thanks for the video.
I plan to buy a mini bench grinder equiped with speed controller but the lower speed is something around 1or2000rpm and i would like it to be able to turn at much slower speed 100rpm maybe). Can I add a second speed controller to have it go at slower rpm? Sorry for my naive question, I'm definitely not an electrician !!!!
I don't think you can; I think you'll have to replace the speed controller, or maybe there is a way to re-wire it. You should check out Jeremy Fielding's channel: he knows so much about electric motors. www.youtube.com/@JeremyFieldingSr
Do you think this would work on a Bucktool combo BG2600?
You might be able to retrofit a speed controller, but it would have to be a different model than the one I used. It depends on what kind of motor it has, and I can't tell from the info online.
Is it the 110112 motor that is on electric motor wholesale?
They changed their website!! I believe it is this one:
www.electricmotorwholesale.com/LEESON-110145/
Is this brand vfd able to over speed the motor?
I don't think so. The documentation didn't seem to indicate it could go over the designed full speed of the motor. I could be wrong, though: I'm still a novice when it comes to these machines.
