My name is Edward Davis. I am a Vertebrate Paleontologist for the University of Oregon, with positions in both the Earth Sciences Department and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History.
I will be mostly posting videos of my hobbies: making things out of leather, wood, or steel; fixing things like old shoes, fountain pens, wristwatches, and cars; and collecting things like knives, wristwatches, fountain pens, belt buckles, and tools.

Moonswatch unboxing: Mars and Uranus
Just got back from Switzerland, and in addition to chocolate and cheese, I got to enjoy their watches. Here, I unbox the two MoonSwatches I bought, Mars and Uranus. The MoonSwatch is a collaboration between Swatch and Omega to make affordable homages to the venerable Speedmaster, the watch that astronauts wore to the moon, so it's called the "Moonwatch". People seem to have strong opinions about these MoonSwatches, but I'm pretty happy with mine. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Переглядів 202Місяць тому
In this video, we just go over the state of our 1961 Citroen DS wagon (sometimes called a Break or a Safari), and discuss all of the projects we need to do to get the car in good running shape. Let us know what you think we should work on first! We are excited to add a new classic car to our stable, parking it next to the Jeep CJ5. Had to move the Jensen Healey to another location so we can wor...

Unboxing the new Out of Order 10th Anniversary Swiss GMT Automatic Watch! I got number 42!
Переглядів 3676 місяців тому
In this video, I unbox the new special edition Swiss GMT auto wristwatch that Out of Order has released for their 10th anniversary. This watch retails for 1000 euros! Because I visited their headquarters in the summer of 2022, I dared to ask Ricky, the founder, to let me buy watch number 42 out of 65, and he sold it to me! The watch comes in an excellent leather carrying case, with room for two...
My son and I learned how to crack a safe by drilling it!
Переглядів 23610 місяців тому
We bought a safe with no combination and learned how to drill it so we can read the combination off the disks in the lock. Got the safe from Bring Recycling: bringrecycling.org/ I know it's not a "real" safe, but it was a fun project and we learned a lot from it. I hope my viewers learn some things, too!

You said David’s, then you called him Deano-are these for David Sneed?? He goes by both names and that would be such a small world. Anyway thanks so much for this tutorial, I’m gonna give it a shot on my 30 year old ones. Mine went a little too far and I think did get into the cork a little so may not come out as well.
Sorry, if I said David, I mis-spoke. These were for a different fellow. Thanks for watching!
You can always put a bit of a wine cork in for missing cork, I have an example in one of my other videos!
Ages ago, my ‘70 CJ5 quit running on me. It took me months figuring out why it wouldn’t start. Turned out the gas gauge(that didn’t work anyway) was shorting out. Problem was that when it happened it shorted out the entire ignition system.
Wow! That's a frustrating failure, and good to look out for!
I love how the speedo unit’s odometer maxes out at 99,999. They didn’t think to highly of their product in ‘77. Obviously they were wrong. Great job sir.
Thank you! I hope I can get this girl past 99,999!
Very enjoyable video and great job explaining how and why you were doing each step. It's now July 2024 and I'm wondering if you have used up all your sole material. I need my Birkenstocks re-soled! Thanks!
I've resupplied four times now! Send me a message on Etsy and we'll get your sandals fixed!
Looks the same as my CJ 7
It must be a beautiful Jeep, then!
What kind of contact cement do you use?
I only use Barge brand cement
First if all thank you for this interesting Video. I once checked the watch gang website and offers propably two years before. And actually I would consider them almost as a scam. Nothing illegal, but also not honest in their business and prices. If you like the watches I'm glad and happy for you. Enjoy them. But I would recommend to anyone to inroll in that. Anyway thank you for sharing your experience.
Might need to check this out
It's a ton of fun!
Nice watches. Interesting concept. I love Locarno.
Thanks!
Well, This looks pretty fun. I know some folks like the 2CVS. Would be better if everything was in French. 4 on the tree is cool
It was the 4 on the tree that sold me...
just spend $30 to buy a new pair of CUSHIONAIRE.
I'd rather try to reuse as much as possible, and Birkenstocks really do shape to your feet, so it's worth it to most users
Hummmm... I might have to 'borrow' the Mars swatch 😅
It does look nice, doesn't it? I'd be happy with Uranus, too...
Sorry my friend but them are not remotely close to heavy duty work boots.but I'm going to watch your video till the end and hopefully when you are done they will be.
Well, did I make them heavy duty?
Further to my last comment, I have 👍 & subscribed but I think the interior colour is the least important thing you need to think about. There’s a sh*t load of work to do before that needs sorting 😂
Fair enough. What would you tackle first? Right now we're having the devil's own time sourcing a muffler! 😬
I don’t think you have any concept of what you are taking on. There is a life-times work there for a DIY’er…….but good luck anyway.
Thanks! It will be a journey of learning, and if it takes a lifetime, we'll save a lot on not buying other cars to save! 🤣
Very informative! What kind of glue do you recommend to attach the leather back to the cork?
I use Barge brand contact cement
Real handmade shoe repair 👌Old scool Pekdread with Pighair hihihi But this is the new/old time 😉
Thanks!
I mean for that point if its all nh35 movements i might as well just make my own watches for like 250 fully custom
That's kinda where I ended up. I'm just collecting Out of Order now, and making my own custom watches
Great video thank you
Thank you for watching!
Hi, is the blue color on your 304 the original color?
As far as I know, this engine has never been out of this jeep
Wheel strategy video please!!
Maybe when I get some free time this summer...
I enjoyed this.
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
Good video.
Thanks!
All the materials, time and equipment needed....just buy a new pair...
Birkenstocks shape themselves to your feet, so starting over with a new pair isn't as good as getting your existing sandals recrafted!
I dig this. I know exactly where you got it from. I'm very much looking forward to watching the restoration!
Awesome! I'm interested to hear what you know about this car...
@@DrPronghorn Not that much. I'm pretty sure I saw it several times parked on 33rd St.when I drove by though and I wondered if it was going to get restored
Very satisfying to watch ! , are the 'new' soles Non- slip ? , l have a pair of 'Clarks', boatshoes( prestigous handmade in the UK) I behind a bar , where your feet get VERY wet , so, they have allsorts beers, wines & spirts over them !! , l NEVER slipped over Once in 8 years !😂 Would love to 'renovate' them myself , but dont have the skill , so your video was facinating !, thanks
I meant l worked behind a 🍸bar !
Thank you for watching! The white Vibram soles were very sticky, but not as sticky as the siped boat shoes I've had in the past. I haven't been able to find that kind of sole for sale... yet!
Just started watching. They advertise " you might get a Rolex.." lol. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome! I don't think the chance of winning a Rolex is worth it...
It's pronounced ' sit- trin'
Interesting! In the US, we seem to use a pronunciation closer to the French, as I'm just pronouncing it the way I hear my friends in the British car club say the name, and my father has always pronounced it that way, too, as far back as I can remember
I have a wire tracer I can loan you!
I've heard about such tools... how does it work?
It’s two units one that you can hook up at one end of wires and another another end will tell you when you’ve got the correct wires at each end.
I can't wait to hear what she sounds like when she is not in "tractor mode"
Hopefully she's quiet and regal! 🥰
Where did you buy your rebuild kit for the carburetor?
I get just about everything from Summit. I believe that's where I got the kit
Good upload
Thank you! Cheers!
I hope you re getting to take your car out this weekend(Memorial Day). They weather has been glorious!
I did, it was AMAZING!
Where did you buy the vibram sole? I thought they're not for private sale 😮
I buy through Oregon Leather Co. You have to call to order or go in person, they don't have a web store
looks just like the one I grew up in. parked it with my brother in law for restoration one of these days. brings back some great memories, thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
I have a 91 cherokee I've had 21years, I've done everything to it myself. Jeeps are simple to work on. I recently bought a 2008 Honda Accord, I hate working on it, everything is so tight, no room to work.
I love an old Jeep for working on!
Done this a few times.pole a hole on the bottom of it is down facing don’t make as much of a mess if you drain the oil in there first.
Good idea! Thanks!
Damn… robbed blind again… lol
I sold it for the amout I paid for it, so it worked out OK
Hi,does yj dash fits cj5 dash panel?
I wish I knew. I know a lot of pieces fit across the two
@@DrPronghorn I ask because i want to mix wrangler yj and cj5 in one jeep. I like the look of cj5 body's side, and the yj front grill & dash. They are very beautiful.

My Gizeh sandal toe piece came out. How would I fix that?
You might have to pull back the sole and re-glue it. It might require a new sole, but you could try heating it to 180 degrees F in an oven and gently pulling back the sole. I would put new contact cement on to glue everything hack together. Or you could send it to me!
watch gang is a known scam. Only reason you promote it is because you get paid. SHAME
I didn't get paid. And I don't subscribe anymore. I just wanted to document what I got in my two years.
Nice to hear someone using the term "COBBLER" again...Takes me back to the 1950's. 🇬🇧👍
I'm happy I made your day! It's fun to cobble, and I'm glad youtube is giving me the chance to do it!
great and interesting video!
Thank you!
Heat gun or heat table is the way to do it. I’ve rebuilt a few pairs and used all Birkenstock replacements including the recommended glue. Learn how to do it and save $$. Came out great !
I now use the oven to do it, it's faster and more consistent!
@@DrPronghornI just did my first sandal with heat gun and boy was it tough; that glue did NOT want to give up. Especially where it was stuck the leather. Eventually got it done but had to use razor knife to slice it there and then grind remainder with belt sander. Mind sharing details on oven use? Maybe I’ll try that for the other sandal and see if any easier. Thanks for the tips!
@@Phoeff99 The soles stick to real leather better than anything else. I like to put them in an oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 Celsius) for about 20 minutes and then check on them. You might have to peel the soles partway back and put them back in. Don't use a food oven...
@@DrPronghorn thanksv for the directions I had read elsewhere 200° but I wasn’t sure about the timing. 20 minutes sounds reasonable and yes thank you for the warning about not using a food oven.
@@DrPronghorn so I finished my resole project and I’m pretty happy with the result. Thanks for you tips. Of course you learn as you go and next time it’ll be faster cleaner and better but i used Vibram Sierras stuck with Barge SuperStick and so far they are holding up well. A combination of trimming with bandsaw and razor knife then sanding with a little 1”‘belt sander did the trick. I also found that a layer or two of masking tape on the exposed leather and cork gave me bit of protection during sanding. I do wonder though having worn them whether I should have added an EVA layer between for extra cushion. The Sierras are pretty firm rubber and the cork is well compressed after two years of use…not much cushion anymore. You see any problem with that idea in the future?
Hey great video! I have the exact sandle except on mine the leather strap where your toe goes popped out. I was disappointed bc I’ve only had them a year. The last ones I had lasted 25 years and and on the exact same day the toe strap popped out on both shoes😂 Guess they don’t make em like they used to. If you’re ever so inclined, I’d love to see a video on how you fixthe toe strap.
I happen to be working on exactly that right now!

Gracias!
Super. 👍
Thank you 👍
Looks like it was a good show. I saw an Ek Knife on your friends table. I have one like it and also a Desert Storm commerative version. Thanks for taking us along.
You're welcome! I wasn't sure how much interest there would be, so I made this one shorter. If it gets a lot of views, I'll do a longer one next year!
I have had the watch gang subscription for a little over a year now, was fairly happy with the watches I was getting under the black tear, so I bumped it up to the platinum, I have been nothing but disappointed in every single one of those an absolute waste of money at that subscription level.
That's disappointing. I was happy with Platinum when I was doing it, but that was a couple of years ago now.
@@DrPronghorn I have gotten three from the platinum level so far and none of them have been worth the cost.
