As a long time fan, I appreciate that first time listeners of TVXQ have mixed reviews. I understand that the TVXQ sound is an acquired taste. I like this very honest review considering every time there is a TVXQ comeback, their sound and song structures are quite experimental in the attempt to deviate from kpop trends, hence the message of the song Rebel in celebration of 20yrs in the industry. Through the years, this element of TVXQ has always been one of the reasons I am a fan. It's never boring with them. Hahah
Thank you for your reaction! ❤️🥳

    Yes, it's Yunho's real voice.
We (TVXQ's fans) often find this kind voice in TVXQ Japanese songs (we call TVXQ in japan is Tohoshinki).

Love that they have been around for 20 years! So rare to find a group with that longevity that is still fairly active and producing great music! 💪🏾👶

I completely agree with Devon. I got into kpop in 2008 when Mirotic came out and this song felt we were going back to that time and I couldn't stop my mouth from opening and I had to keep watching it because I loved it so much and to his friend that is his voice lol. But I enjoyed the honesty and niceness from him. Thank you for the reaction. Hope to see more.

Thank you for your reaction to TVXQ - the legendary kpop group who has been around for 20 years, the idol of idols.
Yes, that is Yunho's actual voice. They recently released a behind the scenes of the recording of Rebel and he does really have that deep of a voice.
TVXQ has always been known for their experimental SMP songs, and Rebel harkens back to that. Even me, being a 20 year TVXQ fan who has loved them since debut, had to listen to Rebel a few times to understand the structure and appreciate it.
Highly hope that you continue to support TVXQ for the years to come...their music surely is never boring 😋

It's pretty rare for TVXQ songs not to get divided opinions as they more often than not experiment with songwriting or production choices. But they always commit 100% and that is what piques interest regardless of whether the song appeals to personal taste or not.
Definitely a very TVXQ song, personally I wasn't sure it would be to my taste listening to the teasers (but when has a teaser ever meant anything when it comes to their songs 😂) but I ended up totally loving it after one listen!

Love that they experiment with sounds! That’s one thing about a lot of SM groups is that they aren’t afraid to make bold choices 💪🏾👶

TVXQ's "Rebel" is their lead track from their 9th full-length Korean album, 20&2 -- 20 years and still 2 members strong -- which was released on their anniversary, Dec. 26, as a celebration of their 20th anniversary. (That's why the song samples the Christmas song "Carol of the Bells," because it's a homage to their Christmastime debut.)
You now need to see them perform "Rebel" with the choreography live. You think it looks crazy in the MV, but they actually do most of that all live as well. And, yep that's U-Know's real voice. If you watch a live performance, you will see he sounds the same.
If you haven't yet, you should also check out their pre-release track from this album, called "Down." And you definitely need to check out their Killing Voice performance. Killing Voice was pretty much made for SM Entertainment vocalists and Changmin and U-Know are one of the best examples of that.
TVXQ truly are all-time legends in the music industry. As an SM group, for anyone who knows SM, it should be no surprise that they are outstanding vocalists. TVXQ was originally supposed to be a purely acapella group, so they all have amazing vocals. They actually have several acapella performances in their early days that really showcase how amazing they were as vocalists. TVXQ is one of the reasons why SM is recognized as a vocal powerhouse and why the company has come to be known for having some of the best dancers and vocalists in the industry.
Here is some background to help you understand the dynamics of TVXQ better. TVXQ (English and Chinese)/DBSK (Korean)/ Tohoshinki (Japanese), which each are the abbreviations/acronyms of the words in each language that translates to mean "Rising Gods of the East," debuted in 2003 (Second generation) as a 5 member group. But, in 2010 three of their members left SM Entertainment and the group and formed a new group called JYJ -- the initials of the members: Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong. (Up until recently, JYJ was still a group and they still produced music, but because they left SM Entertainment -- one of the most powerful and influential companies in the industry -- on less than ideal terms, it has made it more difficult for them to promote themselves and their music. So the members of JYJ are more known as actors and producers than they are as singers now.)
However, Max/Changmin and U-Know/Yunho continued as TVXQ as a duo. They've been a duo for longer then they ever were a 5 member group. As you can see, even now as a duo they are so talented that they have the vocal range to cover all the parts of a song between the two of them, including rap.
Changmin (the youngest member) was 15 and U-Know was 17 years old when they debuted. Therefore, although they are one of the senior Kpop groups, Changmin is only 35 and U-Know is 37. TVXQ is SM's most senior group that is still active, but U-Know and Changmin are still younger than, or the same age as, many of the members of the legendary groups who came after them within their generation. They are best friends with Super Junior and they pretty much all grew up together. Changmin is also best friends with Minho from SHINee. And Xiumin from EXO says Changmin was one of the reason why he auditioned for SM because he wanted to meet Changmin and become like him.
As you heard, Changmin is known for his powerful high notes -- even more powerful than Onew or Jonghyun from SHINee or Chen and Baekhyun from EXO, who are all known as some of the best vocalists in the whole Kpop industry -- he literally has one of the widest note ranges of almost any Kpop artist. In a high note battle he always wins.
It wouldn't be a TVXQ/Changmin song if we didn't get to hear at least one unbelievable high note from him. (Fun fact: Changmin got married in 2020 and he became a father to a boy in 2022.)
U-Know is known for his dancing and his passion for dancing and singing. He is also the rapper of the group. (U-Know truly loves what he does and doesn't hide it. He will tell you he is proud of his accomplishments and he is proud of his work. His off-the-charts passion and intensity is kind of a running joke within the industry. It's one of the things he is most known for.)
Tohoshinki (TVXQ) are one of the most famous singers in Japan as well, even among Japanese artists. Over the years, I think they have probably spent more time promoting and touring in Japan than they have in Korea, so they are megastars in Japan. And like SHINee and BoA, etc., they are so popular in Japan that they are considered part of the mainstream music scene and they are fluent in Japanese. TVXQ has one of the biggest worldwide fan bases and they sell out some of the largest concert venues in the world. They are one of SM Entertainment's top selling groups, easily selling out concert tours around the world.
TVXQ's fandom is Cassiopeia and their fan color is pearl red -- which is why you see one of the primary colors in most of TVXQ's MVs is red -- and when you attend a TVXQ concert you will see an ocean of red. Welcome to the Cassiopeia fandom. (Their fandom is named after the 5-starred constellation, Cassiopeia, because they originally were 5 members who were supposed to be gods who came from the stars.) If you like TVXQ then you are a Cassi. (In Japan their fans are called BigEast because Tohoshinki are Gods of the East and they have one of the largest fandoms.)
