This band is certainly worthy of a deep dive. Speed, the vocalist, is one of the best to do it. His choruses are all delicious candy. Speed’s other band, The Night Flight Orchestra, is equally as cool although very different. It’s in the style of album oriented rock (AOR) like Boston, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon. Great stuff.

Been listening to Soilwork since they released "Stabbing the Drama" back in the early 2005.Their best work IMO is the double album "The Living Infitine" Sadly my favorite part of the band left which was the drummer Dirk. This album is really good though and their new drummer is fantastic. Bjorn, the vocalist, is a fucking powerhouse. I got to see them live here in NC once and I am so glad I did because I will probably never get to again.

Stabbing the Drama was when I first heard them too. That CD was all I listened to for a solid 8 months. The groove and melody that album had blew me away. Been a huge fan ever since then. Every album is great except Sworn to a Great Divide, but that’s their only weak album and it’s not all that bad to be honest

I don't comment on UA-cam much, but I have to formally request a deep dive on these guys. Soilwork have been around since the 90s and have really shaped the evolution of Swedish Melodic Death Metal. They are probably one of the best extreme metal bands of all time and definitely do not get the credit or attention they deserve. Pick any song, any album, you will not be disappointed.

  • @yankeedude252

If I had to say there is one "greatest band of all time", it's definitely Soilwork. I'd love to see more, something off of The Living Infinite or The Ride Majestic, as I feel that was their absolute peak of songwriting genius (although they've lost very little, if any, of it since).

    • @kalas-kurt
      @kalas-kurt Рік тому

Can't really agree with them being the greatest band of all time, but these two albums are definitely among their greatest! A peak within the genre itself. As someone else mentioned their other band Night Flight Orchestra are really pleasant. Not progressive at all, but great "good vibes" hard rock stuff 🤙

This was a sweet track! The composition of it all, and the anthemic nature of it reminds me a little bit of Dream Evil, close to a rock opera style. That riff will probably play in my head all day, though; such a good sound coming out of that guitar! And the drummer was really letting it off through most of that, what a phenomenal piece!

a little explanation on the sub-genre Melodic Death Metal: Melodic Death Metal as a sub-genre is synonymous with Gothenburg Thrash Metal (as in Gothenburg, Sweden) that came out of the 90s with bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquility, At The Gates and Soilwork (all Swedish metal bands). The sound started as a more aggressive mix of thrash metal and death metal but soon morphed with a lot of the bands shedding their thrash influences and embracing the growls of death metal but adding in melodies and harmonies. As the name says, melodic death metal is "softer" than straight death metal, melo death usually has more technicality in their guitar work, in some case there's more clean singing as well. as a result, Melodic Death Metal is the more commercial side of extreme music.

Soilwork is such a wonderful band with a great evolution throughout their discography. Starting with straight (amazing!) melo death (e.g. 'Razorlives', 'Bastard Chain') evolving to a more prog and classic metal orientated niche of melo death. I highly recommend to check out the magnus opus of the modern Soilwork era 'A Whisp of the Atlantic', a 16+ min masterpiece, compossed and written by guitarist David Andersson who sadly passed away recently.

Sometime around 2007/8 I got huge into this genre of music. Soilwork, In Flames, Sonic Syndicate, Blinded Colony, etc. Still love them all but listen to them less often. Soilwork in particular has maintained the same sounded all this time, which I like (I stopped listening to In Flames when they got poppy).
Also funny you are surprised you're still getting new band requests. I follow over 500 bands on Spotify, most of which you haven't covered yet. If I ever have time I would love to send you a spreadsheet with bands, tags, and fun facts about them. Yes Geebz! This was a major hole in your catalogue. In Flames is still the biggest one for me. Soilwork is great and their singer Bjorn "Speed" Strid and his vocal hooks are legendary. He's probably done a million guest appearances and he does the clean vocals for an Italian Melodic Death Metal band called Disarmonia Mundi.
Melodic Death Metal basically means the guitars are more of the melody when the singer is growling. That's what Old In Flames is.
Sadly, one of their guitarists committed suicide right after this album just came out. RIP David Andersson.

Is this the first Gothenburg song you’ve reviewed? I think you might have done one Dark Tranquillity song already, but this is a pretty big sub-genre from Sweden and they created the Melodic Death Metal sound. At The Gates, In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, Mnemic, and probably 30+ other bands. Bands like Killswitch Engage are obviously influenced by them.

For anyone that was interested "Övergivenheten" isn't really a word in Swedish, but if it was the translation would be this:
    The Forsakenness
    Explanation:
    (verb) Överge = Forsake
    (adj) Övergiven = Forsaken
(Noun) Övergivenhet = Forsakenness (made up by artist)
Lastly, the -en suffix is the definite article landing us at "The Forsakenness"
Abandon or desert somewhat works but semantically I felt Forsaken to be the best match.
Great Reaction and breakdown as usual Geebz! :)
