I have tons of buttons. I sorted most of them by color in jelly jars. I also have one for kid type buttons. I have a plastic container with all white ones. I have another container with small doll sized ones. And another container with buttons that I only have one of. I threaded together the buttons that matched. It took along time to get everything sorted, but it is so much easier when looking for a certain size and amount.
Ok so i love buttons too!! I have loved them sonce i was a child so i have quiet a collection of old vintage glass n i even have military . I discovered bead boxes are the best way to soart them n even some small tins too for cheapy plastic like u said but the vintage n glass i have tiny doll dressers n those hold the very special certain metals will change color or even scratch in the tins so yes bead boxes cause i even soart the metal by color of metal and era. Love buttons! Yes! I dont use the glass ones im afraid of breaking them or the military ines cause i know they r hard to find.
I make my own button cards for my nicer/special button sets. I sew them on to index cards.

All my buttons are sorted by color in a vertical storage unit with tons of little drawers. But ... because I love rummaging through buttons so much I find it almost a negative having them so well organized. Maybe I'll throw a bunch of them into a tin just for rummaging, LOL.
Lisa Bunnage Hehe that's funny that they are too organized. I really love rummaging through buttons too...not sure what it is about them that makes it so fun...
I don't have as many buttons yet.. lol so at the moment mine are in a cute Jar on my desk. Just one that i think had some peaches or something in it but it was a pretty jar.. so instead of tossing in the Recycle box I washed peeled the label off of and i love it because the jar is cute and then it has some bright colored mixed with some older plastic buttons from old clothes or that I inherited from my grandma.
I don't have as many buttons as you do (I'm more of fabric paint hoarder :P ) but I do store them in a clear plastic jar, over my bookcase
New subscriber here. Very nice channel. I LOVE buttons also. I have fond memories of playing with my grandma's buttons that she kept in glass Mason canning jars. Oh I spotted a Red flower button in the large container of plastic buttons! ;-)
It's not usually a good idea to store metal buttons in a metal tin. I had an old tin of buttons and the lovely buttons and the inside of the tin rusted.
I have far more buttons than I will ever need, but I just can't part with them! I currently have the bulk of them sorted by color in stackable containers, and then the masses of white/clear ones are in a massive ziplock bag.
I short them by color in tiny ziplock style bags and toss them in a box. If i have a new clothes with an extra button I sew them on the tags.
I use glass apothecary jars and have them sorted similar to your method. I display my jars in the craft room and like that the clear glass let's me see the buttons.
I am obsessed with tiny drawer sets. I have a coin collection that I have all sorted out into a tiny drawer set that I found in the housewares section of a Ross store. Also, my mom has one of those big plastic tiny drawer sets from a hardware store for things like batteries, buttons, seam rippers, etc. The one she has is clear plastic so she can see exactly what's in the tiny drawers.
I love buttons too. I use a plastic container by Craft Mate which I really like, But I have SO many more to be organized. Do you ever make jewelry out of your buttons? I want to try that one day. tfs

I have quite a few buttons and I'm incredibly anal about how I store them. They are by color in individual containers, like glass baby food jars!!
I have gobs of buttons.. .I even bought buttons on ebay. I have had lots of buttons from theatre., buttons taken off of clothes that I used for costumes.... anyway, metal buttons sorted by brass, gold , and silver. Plastic buttons sorted by old , new large, small.. shapes . I also took the 3lb buttons that are from ebay. and strung together buttons that were alike.. sorted by color , I have used the Kroger potato salad square plastic containers for my bins... I believe I have about 12 containers of buttons... I use plastic peanut butter jars for sorting also... When my room gets reorganized/cleaned and I get shelves, the buttons will go on the top shelves... Can you say I LOVE BUTTONS.. It started with my Grandmother Zella's button box.
Trayne1837 Hehe you definitely love buttons :) I haven't bought any from ebay before, but I've bought a couple of boxes worth at estate sales before.
Aye, aye, aye, do I have buttons! :D I have so many I organize them by color (with categories for silver metal, brass, glass and mother of pearl) and store them in vintage mason jars. I mix vintage with contemporary/modern.
I've always loved having tons of buttons and since I acquired several more recently I decided it was time to resort them. They used to all be thrown together into a couple of bins, but now they are all organized by type. Check out the video to see all my buttons and how I ended up sorting them :)

Good job. On the metal buttons I would make a divider for the tin so I could separate them by metal finish. Gold, silver, etc.
