WHY are they so different - Flylight NiNE and ADAM wings

- I've frequently get asked what is the biggest differences between the Flylight ADAM and NiNE so the only way I felt I could answer it was by making a comparison video. I appreciate that I didn't fly the ADAM (PeaBee 2) on the same day but I do have enough experience to make a verbal comparison.
If you ask me even now, which one do I prefer I will still come back with the same answer, which you will probably say I'm sitting on the fence, but in reality, its why I still have both wings.
I really hope you enjoyed this comparison video, maybe I should make a rigging comparison one, that would be interesting. See you in the comments.

That stall was very interesting, totally different to when we went up in the bigger one. Great video Giles.
Hi Terry, I think it was a little too nosey high on entry. The Quantum has a very very benign stall.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I was glad it was benign when the bar hit the front strut for the first time in Delta Zulu! I'd love to fly that aircraft again, just to compare the experience with the Deltajet.
I started watching 3 years back, I told a friend about the Adam PeaBee you tested a while back that had you laughing all flight.
He bought one and it is currently en-route from England to Australia.
I'm looking forward to flying my Sub-70kg V-Lite with him, wondering how they perform together and hoping for some camping trips.
Thanks for the videos Giles, flying alone is good but with a friend will be fantastic! Blue 🍺😎👍
Hi Blue, good to hear from you. You'll have to let me know how your friend gets on with the Adam wing. I'm sure you'll both have fun flying together. I flew my Adam only last week and still enjoy flying it.
I didn't start watching you \, when you started. Have been going back and catching up.
I hope you are enjoying the catch up. It's bit like binge watching a TV series knowing everyone else has had to wait😁.
Great comparison with an interesting description of how they are different
Hi Lee, you'll find this when you finally get on your wonderful machine.🤙🏻🤙🏻
Good to see another video. When a pilot doesn’t post for a while I start to hope nothing bad has happened. Stay warm up there Giles!
Hi Tom, I'm still here. I do try and post on my Instagram from time to time. How are you doing?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Doing well thanks! I got my solar power system built over the summer and my trailer is mostly finished as well. Glad the blistering heat is over with and the fire season is (fingers crossed) starting to ease up. As the UK is cursing the rain, we are praying for it.
You have been working hard then. Fingers crossed for you as well.
Really interesting insight, thanks Giles. I had kind of expected a GT450 (Adam) vs Quik R (Nine) type thing, but the differences are, well, different! The Quik R is way heavier in roll than the GT450, do the first time I flew my GT450 after only flying the instructor's Quik R, I was over controlling the roll rather a lot! Good job there was the instructor in the back to 'damp' that (i.e. grab the bar!) 🤣 Now I've flown the GT450 ever since, it's just natural.
Hi Mike, it is amazing how different machines, even with a 5mph airspeed change, can transform the handling of a machine. I was a little nervous about trying to describe the differences but it seems to have been well received and interpreted the way I was expecting.
Another interesting and enjoyable watch, Giles. One day I'll get a taste of both aircraft I hope. 😁👍
Hi Dan, I hope you will but I'm sure you'll enjoy your Peabee the most.
Bloody hell giles interesting fella you, referencing your videos to refresh my memory whilst im training for nppl
Top content
Hi there and welcome to the channel. I've had my fair share of learning experiences, loads more content in the play lists if that helps. I think my GST is in there somewhere.
Loving the crazy adventures 😅
Hi Kernal, you certainly do review a lot of tents on your channel. I do drop in from time to time. I hope I can get more adventures in, maybe even a winter adventure.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 thanks for dropping by, yes love winter adventures
Brilliant, entertaining video. I hope these wonderful aircraft go electric someday soon even if 60 minutes is all one can get today. Dealing with ICE two strokers is a nightmare that today could be avoided if more RD in E power for microlights is advanced by experts like yourself Giles.
Hi Andres, unfortunately I can't improve the energy density of the current cells that are available. The cells that are used are the 18650 and they haven't changed in quite a while.
Informative and enjoyable, Giles.
Hi Zach, how are you doing? Glad you found it informative and enjoyable.
Great video! Thank you.
Cheers Ryan, I hope you are keeping well?
An enjoyable comparison, expertly delivered 👍🏻 Great video Giles, very professional footage 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hi Kev, thank you as always. Have you managed to keep the flying hours up?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Trying hard!!! 😬
I managed 2.5 hours today on the Peabee, I think it cost me £18 in fuel and oil.😜
Interesting video Giles and I'm glad you mentioned the Fox on the original. I think for me it would have to be the Adam, but which trike?
The retracts look sexy but you won't see it in flight. But I know you like the sleek look.
Thanks for the video Giles. Very good. Very informative. Fly safe! 😊
Hi Wayne, good to hear from you, how is your runway holding up?
Hi Wayne, good to hear from you, how is your runway holding up?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 It's doing great! The weather is a lot better now. I've been doing some good flying.
That's great to hear.
Another excellent video Giles. Did I miss the bit about the differences between the moster 185, and that 303? I understand the increased speed and fuel burn and how the thirstier engine can get you there quicker. Are the both two strokes? What's the sort of difference between HP and Torque, and which is better for flexwing aircraft
Hi Simon, I didn't want to go into too much detail as the engines are quite far apart in performance. The 185 is only 25 hp, the 303 is 38. The 185 is air cooled, the 303 is water cooled. Both are 2 strokes. You do feel the greater torque of the 303 at full power but that is all. In short the 303 will burn less fuel per mile on the NiNE than the 185 will on the ADAM.
Thank for the brilliant video.
Cheers Stone. I hope you are keeping well?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Yeah...feeling good. Just got my got my Nine through Customs and tomorrow, knock-wood, I'll go down and pick it up. I don't want to be the only person that doesn't have one😉
@@stone8597 oh wow. You'll have to drop me a comment or message via Instagram on how you find it.
Great sum up. I love the NiNE wing. 👍
I think my stall nose position was a little too high.
Yet again Giles, excellent really enjoyed the comparison explanation’s, simple but easy to understand.👍👍👍
I think you'll understand when you finally get your hands on your machine. Keep safe.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Really looking forward to flying the Adam, hopefully not too far away. Last lesson with Ed we were doing circuits, take offs and landings 👍👍👍
That's awesome.
OMG you went flying without the camera on you, wow!! Mind, am surprised you haven't got a mirror stuck on that front pole!
Haha, I'm not sure why I'd have a mirror on the front strut....I do have a comedy response ready for your reply 😜.
Interesting. There are certainly aspects of the Adam I miss, like its chuck-about-ability and (very) short field use but I'm happy I switched to the Nine. Its speed, rock steady handling, shorter when packed, speed of setting up (not that the Adam was slow), the 303 engine, and it looks so good.
Granted the Adam has its place for sub-70 and the Nine is SSDR. You're lucky to have two locations and just added the Nine for location #2. But if I was trying to put one of either at two locations I'd probably have two Nines.
Its great that you have flown both as well. Would you say that I was far off the mark with the description? I'm just curious to know from a feedback point, I'm sure we'll speak tomorrow.
I'm terrified of my own wake in my Adam. I feel like it's too much of a hit for the structure of the wing. I'm also nervous to hold the bar in to my gut like that. It seems like alot of pressure for that keychain ring on the nose. I'd like to see more robust attachment points, and maybe dual flying wires on the roll control. If one of those go, it's game over. That's why I'm content on just calmly floating around when I fly it. I don't push it.
Hi Ed, I think you are overthinking the fragility of your machine. It will make you black out before it will fail. The control bar wires are not that highly loaded and the lift wires will take over 6 tonnes each. So give that bar a good pull with confidence 😁.
Hi. I would like to see this nine trike with an eos quattro engine. It wolud be very interesting for small pilots. Thanks for this video.
It has crossed my mind but it's a bit out of my price range at the moment. I think it would be perfect on the Adam wing but the weight makes the trike SSDR so makes for an impractical Sub 70 machine.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 what do you think about the EOS Quattro for a Nine? Do you think those 30-31 hp aren't going to be enough?
very interesting thanks
Hi Jonny, glad you enjoyed it.
I’d be happy with either one, I wouldn’t disrespect you if you wanted to send me either one. Ps have told you lately how great you are.
Hi Dean, I had a quick look at your picture, I'm guessing that is you in the front seat? What do you fly at the moment?
@@GolfFoxtrot22
Nothing at the moment I sold all of my toys when I became ill. Hoping to get back sometime soon. I would like to get back into nanolite, something like the mine would be good.
Excellent 👍
Hi Patrick, I hope all is well over there?
@@GolfFoxtrot22
Life is good except for the flying thing. I was late to get to my trike rebuild and its been slow going. I got my dual throttle installed, that was harder than expected, but your vid on it was helpful for sure. I made a new Engine mount for a new engine and it turned out nice and engine is now wired up now and should get it running today.
My next real concern now is with the trike hangpoint being different I may have to move my control bar position and that will mean new front and rear control cables. Good weather this weekend here so I will hopefully get over to the field and do a static set up with the wing.
Best wishes
Seems like you are getting some progress on your machine. How did the engine runs go?
Great video! Giles your thoughts re using an existing Moster 185 (which I have) and upgrade later? (assuming I don’t mind higher fuel burn in this period). Re Nine wing.
Hi Greg, I'm making an assumption that you already have your NPPL, then it will definitely transform your distance flying experience.....shhh don't tell Ben though :)
It's all about the headroom on the engine.
Hi Paul, I completely agree. I normally use the 2 litre car and a 1 litre car on the motorway analogy.
I can't get my PB2/Adam to land on the rear wheels, as you say, it's very flat and occasionally fractionally front wheel first - no drama though. But compared to landing in a Quantum (not flown a Nine or a Quik yet), it is very different.
Hi NSM3, is that you Tony? I do try and remember people's names.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 No, I'm Neil, you gave me advice over the phone about registering the PB.
@@nsm3 ah yes, sorry Neil. I do try and remember.
The 9 comes over as a stiff suspension sports car and the Adam a comfy hatch back.
That's a very good analogy. I hope all is well.
That's a very good analogy. I hope all is well.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 all well as can be expected.
That is good to hear Algy.
Great comparison vid! As with most things in aviation it is mission and compromises, right? Both wings sound fabulous for their respective missions.
Excellent point about engine sizing optimization for the aircraft weight & wing.
85 kilos ?? just a pup. Tall & full size 'merican here, pushing 115 kilos ready to fly. 😂
Best performance improvement for my trike? New wing? Uh no, it would be me losing some gravitational attraction. 😄
Hi Doug, the weird thing with this wing it seems to produce more lift and control. MTOW is 250 kgs in the NiNE, 194kgs for the ADAM.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Funny you mention that, I was talking with the company that makes my wings and a similar comment was made about the magic of delta wings. Sometimes they perform in unexpected ways. Makes me wonder ... seems like there is more improvement / performance to be found in our wings.
You could say that. Imagine what the 7 would have been like :O
What's the life of the 303, how many hours before needed rebuild? Plus what should I set the EGT ALARM for max temp wise!
There are a lot of details in your question. Here is a link to the manual.www.polinithor.com/en/thor-303-303-ds-2/
I'm not really sure on the life of the engine/rebuild time. My EGT alarm is set to 680 degrees C as per the manual. www.polinithor.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/PI-773-THOR-303.pdf. I hope that helps.
