Great video, I did my application in 2018 and try to encourage everyone to do it.
A minor correction though if you don't mind but an important one. Technically you are already a Jamaican citizen, you are simply making yourself known to the Jamaican government when you apply for the certificate.
If you read section 3B (b) of the Jamaican constitution, persons born IN Jamaica (citizens by birth) "are citizens from the date of their birth". That is clear for those on the Island.
However, interestingly 3C (b) through which we apply is very similar. Persons born OUTSIDE of Jamaica (citizens by descent) "are citizens from the date of their birth IF one of the parents was a citizen at the time of your birth". Google the constitution, it's easy to find and the sections are short.
Now look at the certificate in the video at the 11.42 mark. It clearly shows how your citizenship was validated. The title is CERTIFICATION OF JAMAICAN CITIZENSHIP UNDER SECTION 3C (b) OF THE CITIZENSHIP.
Also note, although not seen in the shot, the certificate clearly says " This certifies..... a claim to Jamaican citizenship by birth (descent) in respect to the abovementioned person has been satisfactorily established". And at the end of the certificate, also not in shot says "Joe Bloggs is a citizen of Jamaica". Nowhere does it say you are now a citizen as of x or y date. Hence when you make your application you are definitely not applying for citizenship, you are simply letting the government know about your existence and stating your claim.
Why is this important, and why do I raise it? Well consider my daughter, second generation born in England (my parents were born in Jamaica). My daughter already has British and Korean citizenship by birth (my wife is Korean). However Koreans under normal circumstances are unable to hold multiple citizenships, the moment they obtain one, they cease to be Korean. Hence my wife in England choses not to be Jamaican or British as she will stop being Korean. There's a few clauses though, one of which is Koreans born with other citizenships (since 1998) can keep their Korean citizenship so long as the other citizenships were obtained at BIRTH, not a moment later (ie.like Jamaican or British citizenship).
It's also helpful knowing this to have a sense of belonging in the eyes of the law. Many Jamaicans living abroad should feel empowered that they are fully Jamaican wether born there or not.
All of the above was validated by MFAFT in Jamaica, I have a very clear email from them. Also a couple of related points they highlighted:
    1. The date printed on the certificate indicates the effective date of the confirmation of citizenship by descent.
    2. There are no limits to the number of generations who may claim citizenship by descent, the onus is on the applicant to prove a claim to citizenship.
    3. The Jamaican constitution does not prevent any Jamaican from having citizenship with another country (there are no limits to the number of citizenships one may hold). Generally, Jamaicans who become citizens of another country do not lose their status as Jamaican unless they choose to renounce it.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT JA PASSPORT PHOTOS - DO NOT USE THE PHOTO BOOTH, THESE PHOTOS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! I had to get mine done at Max Spielmann. They have computer software for international passports and the thick matt photo paper that is required to print them on. If you are light-skinned, make sure that a pastel colour is applied to the background and wear dark clothing, if you are dark-skinned make sure that the background is white and wear light clothing.

Snappy snaps south Kensington, it's close to the Jamaican high commission in London, the guy in there does Jamaican passport photos all the time, he knows how they should be done, the commission didn't like my first lot, so they told to me to go there, another bit of advice, if you are a few minutes late for your appointment they'll send you away, they don't care how far you came

Very informative. You are correct about making sure all the documentation is in order especially the spelling! If you are divorced, make sure you include those documents in the paperwork as well. They did ask me for my marriage certificate but I had to explain that I had to submit it when I filed for divorce but I had all the other divorce documentation which they accepted.
I applied for mine (by descent) in Jamaica as I was going there anyway. I found it was easier and much quicker and the only time that I didn't spend the entire day in a Government office lol! It took 6 weeks in total to receive it and I'll be applying for my Jamaican passport when I'm next in Jamaica (this year COVID permitting).
These information vlogs are really helpful. Thank you.

Thank you, very useful information. This is a great video. I found this after watching the Black Flourishing and Free channel video, How to get Jamaican Citizenship/Why become a dual citizen 2023. I haven't applied as yet, but have been thinking about it since having to visit the London Jamaican High Commission offices, a few months before the Covid pandemic. I wasn't aware of this qualification directly, if I had known of this at the time, things would have gone a lot smoother for a different interaction. Though long- term, going through citizenship should be easy and smoother for me now than if I started from square one - 1:45

I had to sort out my documents first before they would accept my application as they weren’t in great shape but after I done that it took about six months from the time they took my application. The leadership in Jamacian needs to be changed and is behind the times. They should change the laws to encourage African Americans to get duel citizenship in Jamacia. Mexico took in 30B USD from remittance from the USA from their people exchanges in currency. Imagine how 30B or more yearly would help Jamaica economically and standards of living.

My dad's last name was spelt incorrectly on his birth certificate (missing an 'e' off the end), and it did not include his 2 middle names. However, on my birth certificate, all these extra names and the correct spelling appears, which caused a big problem with the JA consulate in Birmingham. I have now had to spend an additional 3 months to-ing and fro-ing with the British General Registry Office to get a note added to my birth certificate to basically say the person on my birth certificate is actually the same person on the incorrectly recorded JA certificate. I have another appointment scheduled for October, so I hope I can get through this time.

It doesn't really... The Citizenship side of the PICA operation would have processed their citizenship application and confirmed it to the Passport side before the passport could issue.

Some reasons why JA documents are never correct
Back in the day when children were born not in hospital usually in village communities, midwife was the person who registered the children. By this I mean they would write the name of the child down and the day the child was born. Now depending on their ability to spell understand the name that's what is recorded. Also depending on when the parent went to get the child registered and clerk takes down information how they completed the application
All of this in addition to, how they were registered at school.
I.e my mother's name was registered Margaret May ,school registered her May Margaret. Known as that all her life, family calls her Dorothy.
Registered with passport as May to enter UK as May.
Return to JA renewing her passport now picked up As name should be Margaret May.Bearing in mind British passport is May.
Date of birth are done in this way as well, midwife write down a date mother says not born on that date could a couple of days out or months out.

I feel your pain in connection to the LEN form.
I started the process in January 2023, and I finally received in September 2024, my father’s birth certificate with the surname filled in.
On my father’s birth certificate, his father’s name was blank (law at that time, stopped registration of children if parents not married.) However, he grew up using his father’s surname.
I did not have access to baptismal or early years school records.
I did however have (1) his original JA passport, that he travelled to the UK on. I then had to produce notorised copies of all (2) my own and siblings birth certificates, showing my father had been using the surname.
I also had (3) notorised marriage certificate for my parents.
Further to this (4) notorised copy of my own marriage certificate.
      (5) Notorised copy of my passport, which was my ID confirmation.
My journey would have been simplified if I could have produced any or all of my father’s governments paperwork, I.e. - council tax, house deeds, DWP, and bank accounts
Throughout this process, I was in touch with Jamaican RGD, it is not for the faint hearted. There is no grey, everything is black and white.
I am now trying to book an appointment at the Jamaican High Commissioner in London. The appointments are not readily available, so you need to be stalking the site. My focus now is to apply for Citizenship by Descent and JA passport.
      Wish me luck 🇯🇲

Yes you can apply for Jamaican citizenship and passport if your in Jamaica, and it’s quicker to do it this way. Of course not everybody will be able to do this as many people live outside of Jamaica and are still entitled to Jamaican citizenship. The benefits of having the passport is that it is a lot easier to do certain business when you have a Jamaican passport as photo ID. The benefits of having a Jamaica. Passport is that there is no limit to the time you can stay on the island, whereas with a foreign passport UK, USA etc you are only permitted to stay in the country for 3 months maximum. The benefits of having citizenship and passport is that you are legally allowed to work in the country. The benefits go on but these are some of the obvious ones.

I am jamaican born and imagine making the statement that my child is not entitled to citizenship and a ja..passport????? People that how ridiculous it was.
Jamaica is steep in bureaucracy and people in jobs for which they are not qualified. Combine this with extreme rudeness and you have the picture.
