Line-of-Sight plans are challenging to implement on a more generic, nationwide scale as most people around the country will be out of range of each other. But a plethora of more coherent plans, from a variety of sources and for different needs, would be of great benefit for the community I think. The good news is that the lower-cost Chinese radios have been the shoulders that cheaper Chinese digital radios can stand on. Right now, there seems to be a renaissance of digital comms becoming popularized, just like Baofengs were years ago. Really exciting to see such strong capabilities coming to market for the prepared citizen 👍

A civilian PACE plan could look something like this assuming your not within simplex VHF/UHF line of sight. (Most people are not close enough to there family MAG) 1. Cell phone call/text 2. Sattelite text garmin/ Apple iOS 18 (update coming this fall) 3. Repeater ham/GMRS programmed into your VHF/UHF radio (baofeng ect) that’s been pre tested that all parties can reach 4. HF radio via js8call NVIS antenna 5. VHF/UHF simplex frequency for when your 3-5 miles ish away 3-3-3 radio plan Turn on your radio. Every 3 hours. For at least 3 minutes. Channel 3. Channel 3 could be programmed for the repeater you want to use. Ect

I wish I understood this. I feel like I need to find someone who gets all this comms, ham radio, etc stuff and walk me through it in a more hands on tutorial. Tbh, I find the comms side details kinda boring. Like the idea of using radios for communications is great and I know it’s extremely important….but I find watching videos about all the details and trying to grasp the concepts difficult.
@@Briathos1GMRS is pretty basic and a good way to get your feet wet. Once you understand GMRS UHF/VHF starts to make more sense. Js8call and such is advanced tier. Start small. You can get a long way with basic knowledge and basic radios.
I was just in a remote part of Michigan. The only thing that worked was the In Reach. The ability to get a local weather forecast is more helpful than the NOAA weather channels
Easiest way to explain switches and routers in my experience: routers are main road intersections with stoplights, and switches are minor intersections with yields and stop signs. Network cables are the roads.
I just created a Comms PACE plan. It took 8hrs of intentive work and honestly can be expanded. To those who want to learn. You are essentially putting together a document for you and your boys. On this doc, you HAVE to explain radio basic as the limitation of the radios they may be using (little bit of radio theory helps). It has to teach them how to use it correctly and when to use it. The schedule on when to use it on a pre determined time and place. If you want even more secretive comms, use the Rattlegram app over your radio. Implement an AES-256 text app to cover up your rattlegram transmission. There is absolutely no fucking way anyone would ever understand what is being said. Its may not be legal in some bands but when shit it popping off near you, nobody will give a shit.
Y'all should do a thing teletype while you're at it. Also, the military is moving more towards HF again after the last 6 years due to spending limits. SATCOM is really expensive and if you need to have a bird moved to cover an area, which is even more money. Really, you should do a thing radios capable of HF. Edit: It's good to recommend a power amp for the SATCOM hand held radio's also, I know the 148 and the 152's without power amps transmit at 5w which is capable of burning out transceivers on satellites when it does not use an amp. This happens because transceiver would attempt to boost the signal power when it relays it to ensure it is received.

Good video! I need to look into that garmin inreach more, sound like a awesome thing to have. The best thing any serious prepper can do to better their comms is get their ham radio license. General class or extra class, don't just get your tech license. Your encouraging people to go out and buy ham radios, and "just start using/playing with them". Would be nice if you guys actually even mentioned in any of these videos the suggestion to become ham radio operators, cuz in all these vids you guys make, Ive not heard it mentioned once. People just going out and buying these radios with no intention of getting licensed just leads to unintentional or intentional interference with our ham bands... Another note, while the vx-6r is a good radio, it will NOT transmit on the CB bands! IF you Mars mod the radio, you can probably transmit on FRS and GMRS, but idk for sure, have to look up what the open transmit frequencies are after doing the mod. The VX-6r def does have wide receive tho, so as long as the signals are strong you can listen to a bunch of stuff (keep in mind the small antenna on the HT will limit receive too). My suggestion, Get a ft-60 HT and a mobile radio like a kenwood tm-v71a or equivalent. Once again, if you consider yourself a serious prepper, get your ham radio license! Its a ton of fun, and you will learn sooo much about radio comms and actually be able to test your radios and antennas to see how far they reach.
It seems like there aren’t many HAM radio stores to visit. I have tried using apps to study to get licensed and it’s so boring. I love the idea of using radios for effective communications….but the studying and details is hard to grasp. Are there groups that one can get plugged into that van give a more hands on tutorial?

July 2024 CrowdStrike outage showcasing either a purposeful or gross negligence that can cripple global-level software. So, sure 99% of time it may seem like software isn't spying on you, or capable of kill-switch style bricking your phone...but IF it were, its the 1% that is the worry; bcuz this sort of software is akin to Disaster Recovery Management (DRM): everything about it is that 0.1-1% scenario, if it doesn't work then...its useless.

The question or rather request that I have got for you guys is to see a video on how to put together a PACE plan with examples or a breakdown of a real plan. I have heard of PACE plans for a long time now but never saw a good example of one
Even if you make an FRS band plan and it isn't widely adopted it would still be good to have a stack of index cards with it printed on them. Hand them out with your loaner radios and to anyone who has their own.

if you are going to make this a series focusing on Radios and Comms you might want to touch on the civilian digital modes like DMR, D-star and Fusion. if you really want to get into the weeds then some of the HF digital modes might be worth a mention. While I own a Vx-6r I much prefer having one of my HT's that is capable of digital modes. Also technically using your Vx-6r on anything other then the ham bands is illegal except in emergencies due to type accreditation of the radio, but I've personally never heard of the FCC actually enforcing that unless you do something stupid like interfere with Government radios.
My wish list is that some industry standard develops (T Rex or otherwise) with a pre built radio plan pdf along with the appropriate CHIRP downloads to plug and play so it minimizes the risk of programming incorrectly. Tbh you could probably even charge for the files if there’s demand for it.
No offense to all the ex military guys even the ones who specifically did commo. There is almost zero correlation to what the civilian prepared citizen needs. ham radio is close but a lot of what they do is also not applicable they don’t care about encryption & most don’t care how much power they use if there operating off 110v ac & there not worried about people direction finding them ect. We can take ideas from both camps but ultimately people like techprepper & OH8STN ect are much closer to what the prepared citizen needs.

There are 40 CB channels currently. There used to be only 23 but in the 80's IIRC, 17 additional channels were added.
There also used to be a licensing requirement, but that has been dropped!

The first step to developing a good communications plan is not using CHIRP. Very few decent radios can be programmed by that software.
