I have a gravely with the duals on . I’ve been trying to decide what to do with it. Hasn’t been used in 25 years . I think it’s like the 75 you have but it has the 8hp engine. But the deck got junked out years ago. It has the seat trolley that attached to it. Thanks for sharing
I have to admit, I am a little biased to the Commercial 40. It's a hard core piece of equipment ! Always has great cut quality, and one tough mower regardless of the conditions I throw at it !
Thanks this was for fun. I have 2more decks now. 50” and a multi mower and the 30” the kidney and the comm 40. Maybe I should do a mow-down video. Lol kidney is good for level mowing. The comm 40 cuts anything you put in front of it.
@@Johnnylove15 Exactly ! That Commercial 40 is a beast ! Always has been ! Unless you are getting into scrub brush, I use it for a clearing mower on heavily overgrown properties ! Probably one of the most versatile mowers of the entire Gravely mower line-up !
Isn’t it amazing how one minute you can mow the front yard with the commerial 40, and the next you can take it into the woods and mow high weeds and small saplings??? Awesome attachment.
I bought a Commercial 12 tractor a while back and I'm looking at a commercial 40 or a kidney mower. I'm leaning toward the Commercial 40. Do you have a favorite?
The kidney is nice to have if you’re going to just mow lawns. The commercial 40 is nice to have for its versatility. It has a nice cut and it can chew through high grass. The 40 doesn’t have quite as good of a cut but it will impress you with how it can be used around the farm.
@@clockbuilderhg You won't be disappointed. That model is easier to work on as well. The blades are less expensive and the metal used to stamp the deck is thicker.
Sad to say,Gravely stopped building their garden tractors back in about 2003.I was possibly looking to by their largest 20 H.P.model,but was told by the company that they opted out to build zero radius mowers.I told them that Deere still builds tractors, but added the zero radius line as a option so the customer could chose between a"Z"track or tractor.I could hear a pin drop on the other side of the phone...LOL!!.Great video!!.Those Gravely's will out last time itself.
WOW! A kidney mower! I never could find anything about one of them and what Brent Chalmers on Old Gravelys.com was just close. I re-did the spindles and put Gator mulcher's on mine and it cuts like a rug. Have the rino horn hitch BUT it has the steering brakes which make a WORLD of difference about getting around. It's a 4-speed and I run it in low wheel speed and the high side on the handlebar. That whizzes it up right well, even with the mulchers which don't blow near as much as the standard blades but don't throw near as much either, which I like. One of the best features to me is you can trim from both sides. Thanks a million for posting this. Really made my day/week/year!.
I also own both and prefer the Kidney mower. My 3 teenagers also do as well. It feels smoother. The front wheels are larger and it's easier to quickly adjust the height of the deck.
Hi, thanks for comment. What do you power it with? On my slope the Kidney deck with my 5665 is too heavy. With its offset wheel it scalps on the downward side of the slope. I am selling the unit Aug of 2018 . Do you need a second one? I'm in South Eastern PA
Man, this brings back some fond memories...I worked for Dr. Bill Kirksey,DVM,as a teenager. He was lead vet at Fort Worth, Tx Zoo, and had Gravelys. I have done lots of mowing with a 10 and a 40 commercial mower. 35 years ago.. You have some cool toys, my friend! Enjoyed your video immensely, thanks for sharing it with us!
Great video! We're looking for a 40" kidney deck right now. I love those wide, single tires. Plus, the duals with the almost zero gap between them! You mind posting how you did this with both tractors? Tire sizes? Both of your tractors look great. That commercial deck is pretty hard to beat!
Nice, If you are in PA, i have a kidney deck and a decent 5665 up for sale as of 10-10-19. will separate if needed. The atv tires are 10.5" wide. They are mounted with the dual wheel spacer inside of the spilt rims, using a tube to secure the air. Not ideal, but it looks bad ass right? Using this set up for a few years, i actually prefer duals because with the two skinny tires, there is less friction to skid and lug around when turning. Even with Gravely's limited slip and planetary confutation without a steering brake the 10" wide tries are harder to maneuver.
@@talkradio5031 The Kidney mower I have for sale is the one in the video. It is just a few older now. I do not use it anymore now that I have the 50" on my 5665. The tractor is not for sale --- unless I get a nice offer for it. That 546 is fully restored now and looks exactly like new. Text I guess.
I have a 40" 3 blade mower for both my '67 L8 and my '77 812 rider. The rider's PTO has a 3:1 reduction so the mower spins a lot slower than on the L. I'm not sure what the PTO reduction is on the L but it gives a much nicer cut with the same mower.
I'd have to do some research, but try to change your drive pulley on your deck drive, if you can increase your rpm speed, ( which I am sure you know ) your cut quality will improve significantly !
You said the 40 was a little high on the downhill side. Do you have it set to float? If not, that may be the problem. BTW, don't know if you're still reading comments 7 years later, but thought I'd give it a try. :)
Watch your weight, I just put my kidney deck on my new to me 5665 the extra weight of the machine helps keep the deck on the ground without pulling up on the bars. Tighten or loosen up, Be sure that the pto clutches are adjusted properly. 10a's are powerful Think dual wheels rule, The 10a without a wider stance could be a bear on hills if your 3blade deck is a 50 inch top hat.. Check out my other videos, front back and side yards are all on a slope here. Dual wheels are my best friend.
Thanks, my experience with the Kidney mower is that it tracks downhill a little on my really sloped ground. It might perform better for you, unless you live on a 45 degree angle hill like I do...The cut was perhaps same or a little better, with the kidney, due to different gear ratios and higher blade tip speeds. I encourage you to try one out with the steering brake.
Hi, thanks for watching....too steep for a sulky. I live on a hillside, and have like a 9 to 13% slope everywhere. I do have 4 sulkies... it's just that they are not relaxing to use when I have to lean to one side, or stand on the axles to not tip over.
Good video. I have a Pro 12 with an old 40" commercial, had to use an adapter since the mower is not a quick hitch. It works great, BUT it's a real killer to steer on my hilly shrub filled lawn. Did you comment that the kidney mower was easier to steer? I'm debating getting a steering brake with the commercial, or just replacing it with the kidney model.
update - I eventually did get a kidney mower. True the commercial mower seemed to be more rugged and quieter, but the kidney is so much easier to maneuver and attach to the quick hitch. The biggest downside to the kidney is the belt can break if you are not careful engaging the pto. I also installed a steering brake on my pro 12 - don't know how I survived without it!
Don`t Care which Gravely you have ,they are work horses . The original 8.5 Gravely Motor was the first I had with the thick blade and ran into an old car horn under some bushes & broke the Blade off from the end ( about 5" ) . and shook like a wild man but kept running .. Took it to the gravely dealer back in the `80`s & he said he never saw one break the Big Blade keep running or not break something in the mower or engine --but it didn`t , Just put a new blade on it & right back to work again .. ____ But that Sulky ---Oooouuuhh like to have castrated myself when I hit a dip in the yard . But in all Still One of the GREATEST & Toughest mowers still out there .. I owned a 12hp also ... Unstoppable .. Darn Near ! ! ! !

Kidney style cuts with 2 blades instead of 3. Less resistance and maintains blade speed better in tall grass than the mowers with 3 blades.
