Single digit handicap Canadian here. Great video man, I've been thinking about chipping a lot lately...
After playing for 20+ years I think chipping may be one of the hardest parts of golf for new players. You can accidently hit good shots and even fluke putts in, but it's pretty dang hard to fake a chip shot. Especially if you have to put some air under it.
Growing up in Canada I was lucky my Dad let me cut a makeshift green in the backyard. Couldn't putt on it but great for chipping. I can't say how many but I probably hit tens of thousands of chips over a few years. Chipping and pitching is the best part of my game now surprise surprise.
Here's a tip for newer golfers. If you want to really lower your scores learn to chip and putt better.
    Get them reps in!
    Cheers

I wanted to personally thank you for putting out this video! I am a perpetual 16-17 handicapper that has struggled with chipping/pitching for years. I took this advice to the range and the course and today, for the first time EVER, shot even par over 9 holes. I am still having trouble processing this. TBH, I figured out a couple of things with my driver as well, but the chipping/pitching has seen by far the largest improvement. Single digits, here I come! Thanks again.

    • @Nxla-92751

If you've been golfing for years and you're stuck at 16 HC - this stuff here is probably where you're losing strokes. 70% of golf is within 140 yards. Like you said, you shot even par on front 9.
You're probably a true 6 HC if you stop losing strokes around the green.

Hi Grant, since driving ranges don't simulate uphill and downhill lies can you make a video on where the ball needs to be in the stance, how your aim point changes, clubbing up/down, and overall on the course tips since its near impossible to practice? Great video Grant. Some of the things that I would like to see are:
    1) Full swing and how to move away from the ball and not sway
    2) Compare the modern versus traditional bunker techniques
    3) Setup and alignment with ball position for driver versus irons
    4) Tee height for fairway finder
    5) Putting philosophy, being a feel player versus mechanical
    6) How to hit irons high, low, fade or draw
    7) Course management, how to score and think around the course

@@pt9373 I find some of my playing partners who are scratch players have a different mindset when it comes to playing the game.
They putt differently (the mindset seems to be more of "make it" rather than "don't three putt") - of course this is just one example.
The reason I ask for Grant's input is when I watch his videos - he always seems to be on the positive side of things (ie: I will get this up and down for an eagle).
Obviously a very talented player - I would like to hear more about his insights, partly to get a glimpse as well of how he thinks when he plays - and hopefully I can learn and apply some of it on my own game.

Great video. I’ve actually gotten a lot better around the greens because of your videos on your channel and the Good Good extras you used to do. One important point in chipping is that you have to have confidence in yourself to pull off the shot. I normally chip the way i had seen in the ever popular Phil Mickelson "chipping 101" video, and while this works, it has not been super consistent for me and i often have the same mis-hits Grant is speaking of here! I saw this video early this AM, and snuck out a little early to get 9 in. I had been thinking of these concepts all day, went out, had a horrible driver day, and thanks to some very chill chipping, I still salvaged a 45. I know to most of you that is a terrible round, but I just started golfing in June 2023. My handicap was a calculated 27 when the "amateur vs Pro grip" video was released, I am now a calculated 21. A video connecting the dots on proper takeaway and wrist hinge to be on plane with a flat left wrist at the top of the swing. Getting that wrist nice and flat at the top eludes me!

Hey Grant! Huge fan. I watch all your videos. Would love to see you explain your iron striking technique. Stance at address, ball positions, shoulder turn, wrist angles, shallowing, follow through, swing thoughts etc. As you have such a flawless swing, I think there is something in that video for beginners to advanced students.
Also, I know you’ve done bunkers before, but more of a deep dive on bunkers in the future would be ideal. How hard to swing, high faced bunkers, width of your stance, finish positions etc.

Putting! There’s so many videos out there on how to chip, how to hit bunker shots, how to hit draws and fades and bomb your driver but I think most amateurs get on the green and it’s just a complete guessing game. Specifically how to read greens and some sort of way to control putting distance.

I’d like to see how you approach 1/2 and 3/4 wedge shots. Proper setup/technique, but also common mistakes you see and how to fix them. One of the hardest things for golfers to learn is to diagnose what exactly they did wrong on a swing that produced a negative result and how they can correct it. Especially when you’re in the middle of a round and not practicing.

Two video ideas. 1. What is the technique to hit 40, 50, 60 yard pitch shots? 2. How do you play mid/long irons out of the rough. Thanks for the videos.

Great job. I would like to see and hear the decision making for club selection for a shot to the green. Perhaps you change it up based on firmness of the green, so flighting it in higher with a higher lofted club. Perhaps trying to keep it lower for a roll onto the green, etc.. you are changing up your “normal distance” club for something else based on conditions or other reasons.

If you are a recreational golfer just playing for fun and you struggle with chipping and haven't got the time or facilities to really practice chipping (it takes alot of practice to get good)
The best advice is to use a hybrid with a putting stroke
    Seriously game changing.
Using a hybrid eliminates the chances of fatting and thinning your shots.
All you need is distance control which you will pick up pretty quickly
Some random I met at the course told me this
He got me to hit 10 chips the way I normally would.
The closest I got was 12 feet to the hole with 10 chips and 3 were off the green
I used the hybrid technique from the same spot 10 times, holed 1, had 2 under a foot and the furthest away was 7 feet
Serious game changer for me at the time,
    Try it out

Hey Grant, I‘ve been struggling finding my yardages for irons and wedges. The balls on our range don’t go as far as regular balls. How do you know which club to use, which shot to hit and how to adjust for lie, weather etc? Would love to see a video about it!!

Had a buddy who was an absolute short game maestro and he always had his weight on his back leg, an extreme amount of shaft lean, and his ball position very fair back. He always holed out at least 3 chips per round. Dogs will be dogs I suppose.

I am that buddy lol. When I was like 14 or 15, was taught by an older guy in my group on a public course how to put the ball back in my stance and swing the club low like a putter in order to take chunks out of the equation. It works out well for me, but you do have to read greens well and Grant's method flies the ball further and leaves less room for variance. Worth the "Pepsi challenge" next time I'm practicing around greens.

having the nasties thinns in me currently, nothing more frustrating. the best tip is learning the basics and then practice, practice, practice, practiec, praticaie,pradndinar.... you get the point.
instead of going on the range and brainlessly beating balls for an hour, try going to the chipping green for an hour. i really gotta force myself to do that but in honesty its the only way to get better at chipping.

I’d love some on course strategy vids. I just go up and swing. Even if it’s a good swing I don’t know how to plan ahead/ strategize a hole. If I try to plan a hole “go left to avoid right bunker” but that leaves me a really tough green shot etc.

hey you forgot something Grant. Its to do with the little practice swings before hitting the shot. Before you hit a chip you should be practicing the same little motion, so you dont want to be too steep, with your little practice swings. You want to make 2 or 3 little practice swings and each of them just brush the grass, not take a divot and not air swing the chipping motion, just brush, brush, brush. Then hit the chip with the same motion. Most tour pros do that, Tiger Woods does it and actually most if not all tour pros do that. I have always done that too, since junior golf, and it not only helps you hit the chip on a nice shallow plane but it helps confidence. When I do it, if I dont brush the grass perfectly I will take another one or two practice swings until I get it perfect, then hit the shot, feel and confidence are so important. No Im not a tour pro, but guys I did play junior golf with and are now pros described my short game as the best they have ever seen, so I know a little about it.
