As a Alabai owner a great explanation. My Alabai is very social, but was VERY socialize d at a young age. The are stubborn, that with size can be difficult. Super smart , loves being outdoors
Good video and explanation. We have an Alabai female, living together with 2 other white shepherds females. Alabay will be the most dominant dog, the most independant and the most attached to its owner or family.
I had to take some long classes for a few weeks and was so worried about leaving our Boerboels alone all day as they're rarely left alone because I'm blessed to be a house wife... We got some nanni cams w/2way mics so I could keep an eye on em & talk to em. I got em some brain stimulating treat toys, left back ground music on w/virtual dog walks on the screen and made sure to run em early in the morn and every evening after class. To my suprise, they both did just fine. The younger one did cry out once in while but they mainly just slept and nothing was destroyed🤗🤟🏽🖤🤎🤟🏽
Great comparison . As a Boerboel owner I have noted that with early socialisation the dog breed is awesome with other animals and can be left alone - however i have come across dogs with bad owners and the aggressive traits are uncontrollable. I have been able to train her to a high level of obedience and recall. I have always admired the Alabai and definitely not a dog for apartments - I think its a breed that will become more popular over time with serious dog enthusiasts.
So would rehabbing a boerboel be like some other breeds or wolf dogs where it may never be able to be fully rehabbed or is it more about calm and consistency and communication you think? A few idiots on my city bought them and have been known in the last to have litters and sell dogs to other idiots who turn them into even bigger problem dogs. Already ended up with a rescue cane corso puppy from similar situations. And my last rescue a st miguel cattledog. Essentially low volume but not properly cared for puppy miller's who want nasty dogs to scare the cops. But they always end up dumping dogs. Or have dogs taken from them. My buddies rescue presa once it realized it was safe and bonded to my buddy changed drastically. Especially with training. Still protective but stable now. My fila adapted almost instantly upon realizing she was safe and needed minor corrections. My corso puppy was dumped before becoming a problem. So I've got her extremely well socialized and her foster helped before she was ready to be adopted. But seen a rescue anatolian that appears to be mostly kangal that was just not having it. We got it to the point as long as other dogs don't run up he's chill. If he goes out he'll allow us to put a muzzle on. When muzzled he seems to feel safer as he's been partially trained to feel protected by his owner. But very selective over dogs it likes being around. Idiots fighting it. Drug dealer tools. Also saw a rescue cao de castro laboreiro that was turned unsavable by the idiot I took my st miguel cattledog from. Became too suspicious. Sorry for the rant btw. I'm bif on saving and rehabbing dogs especially drugs like pitbulls boerboel and other misjudged breeds. I don't want them misunderstood.

Great job, Rui!! I’ve owned 2 BB’s and were some of the best dogs I’ve ever had the privilege to own. I’ve always thought of having an albai- they seem like wonderful dogs. I did own a Caucasion Shepherd (Ovcharka) and she was incredible. Super guardian . Not a dog for a first time owner. But she loved my male BB. She was good with my English Mastiff, too, until she was around 2.5 years. Then it was about Alpha positioning. Either way. Great dogs and what a great comparison. Job well done.
We have both too, and the BOR is more a guard/hunting/companion, the AS is best left alone with other type of dogs like them. We only have 2 AS and they are older now, but they will watch anything from chicks, to cattle. I never had them watch cattle but I been told by friends they are very good at it, they don’t charge far either. If I could get more I would they aren’t easy to find in my parts.
Great video but- IMO- that thumbnail of the Boerboel (Tarzan, I believe?) is so impressive. Rui, have you ever considered crossing the Boerboel & Alabai? I know you are in a quest for the premier mastiff but that cross might produce a spectacular animal...
And currently on a boreabull my last dog was a central Asian shepherd, so I had to watch this video, fully expecting to disagree with something but alas, I can’t I think he hit the nail right on the head

Boerboel is hand down best dog I ever had. I now have the Western European version of an Alabai, the Spanish Mastiff. Similar size and fonction, but less aggressive than the Alabai, these herds guardians are extremely hard to train. They just don’t feel the need to please you like a Boerboel would. Both incredible breeds of dog. But I prefer the Alabai aka Central Asian Shepherd. I am friends with the wonderful Katerina Rekowski who has written only books on this breed in all of North & South America. She is a true embarsodor of this breed.
I’d go with the mastiff. They are like a teddy bear mixed with the hulk. My wife was petting a Saint Bernard someone brought to the bar the other day. That dog was a big slobbery sweet heart.
Thank you so much Rui for this video. Very helpful in gathering information towards making my decision on the best breed for me. I have ONE QUESTION. Does the Alabai drool? If so, how much? I know the Boerboel drools quite a bit and it does bother me a bit. Please let me know how the Alabai is for drooling? Thank you soooooooo much!!!
I don't think drooling is a big deal with either of these dogs. Big dogs drool after they drink, but in general it shouldn't be a big deal. Shedding is a far bigger deal and it's not even close. I don't know about short hair Alabai, but if you took all the hair my long hair Alabai sheds you could create a small dog out of it just about every single day in the summer. My Alabai sheds more than all the other dogs I've had in the last 10 years combined (Tosa Inu, Boerboel, Rottweiler, and Chihuahua).
@@cryptojunkies3619 My Alabai is a male about 5 years old. I do not bring many guests around my Alabai, so I don't have a great answer to your question. When I do bring guests around any of my dogs, I do so cautiously and make sure the person introduces themselves properly so as to give the dog a good impression. My Alabai is very dominant and is prone to want to show his dominance over people/animals he does not know. Alabai are much more difficult than Boerboels because of their independence and stubbornness.
Which dog would you say it more harder to handle a alabai or a kangal? And another question do you think between the kangal and alabai which one is king in terms of strength, agility etc etc
when one see Alabai and Kanal dogs it seems like they were developed in nature and so can run and walk for hours non-stop... but what about the Boer Boel? they were developed in South Africa that even though do not have the harsh climate or Russia and Turkey, the Orient... still the open landscapes in South Africa is enormous ... How long then can we train an adult Boer Boel to run or jog nonstop ? what is suitable and what is harmful for the Boerboel breed in comparison to the Alabai or Kangal that are also large and heavy dogs? what do you see as a good way to train your Boer Boel to jog longer periods that are suitable for them , meaning long is relative to the breed, what is long for a Boer Boel?
I used to take mine and my neighbours dogs in a pickup and drive out to some veld. (South Africa bush land). Throw them out and drive away so they chase us to get a run. Boerboel did similar stamina to a Rottweiler/Labrador.

Even if the other dog is sterilized it wouldn't be still a good idea to get another same gender dog of any of this 2 breeds? I've got a male bandog and a dominant WSS female, adding a boerboel/alabai would be a disaster, am i right?
@@EliteBoerboels Yes I'm thinking of getting a puppy, thanks again. Meanwhile I'll keep learning from your videos, but the more i watch them the more i want to add 1 more member to the pack 😂
Depend on many factors , are they males ? If so not easy however if no females atounf and one is submisse possible , females just make sure to watch out for heats usually possible
Alibais seem cool ... but for exactly what they should be. A Massive land space or Farm. I have 2 Cane Corsos right now and a 2 acre lot .. might make it bigger soon... t hought about getting 2 Alibais or Kangals to compliment them with security but I dont want the competition or fighting issues, so probably wont happen. But I do wonder.. how aggressive are Alibais to strangers that may pass by your land, etc. I imagine "VERY AGGRESSIVE" but I've never known a true owner to talk about this..
Do you think that the boerboels trained as you guys do could be as, or even more effectful at guarding and protecting than the boerboels in Africa that are used to protect the house from wild animals everyday?
By the way that’s for answering all of my questions and so quickly! It’s not common at all and I hope that you’ll gain numbers but still be able to answer the comments😂
One last question: do you know about any Italian boerboels breed and if so is it good? Otherwise would you suggest me to get the puppy shipped? Cause I know they can be traumatized…
@@EliteBoerboels What? really thats 224 pounds! I'm amazed. I'll have to look at videos of your dogs. Never new CAS got that big. I'm thinking of getting one myself, I live in NYC
Alabai (Alabay,) Kangal etc. are bred by Turks as shepherd dogs. They are very independent and even stubborn, therefore they are hard to train, but they are great as shepherd dogs. If you do not have a lot of space and livestock, then these dogs are not good for you.
@EliteBoerboels The English mastiff is the only dog that can be compared or rather be a bit heavier than that S.A mastiff. In general, the boerboel is dominant..
Given Alabai's guarding and territorial instincts, would it be ok to put them in a doggie hotel while the owner is on vacation? Are they less aggressive when they're not in their territory?
Yes they are , will depend a lot on your specific dog, I had littsrs where one is a big teddy bear and other a complete devil , depend on each one nature and also the education they get
One is a guard one is a herding dog. So guard dog will guard your house and won't let any stranger near your house but alabai will chase to kill if someone breaks into your property so borboel is a better dog with better trainability and they are not too dominant to family.
He's wrong in that not all Alabais get to that size. Most Alabais are much smaller. But the purebred Boerboel is very true to form. It's hard to see a Boerboel which is out of breed standard
Cant decide , boerboel way easier to teach however that don’t necessarily mean intelligence so can’t say one is more or less intelligent then the other
As a Alabai owner a great explanation. My Alabai is very social, but was VERY socialize d at a young age. The are stubborn, that with size can be difficult. Super smart , loves being outdoors

Even if the other dog is sterilized it wouldn't be still a good idea to get another same gender dog of any of this 2 breeds? I've got a male bandog and a dominant WSS female, adding a boerboel/alabai would be a disaster, am i right?
I would choose a female on your case my friend ;)
@@EliteBoerboels Even when my white swiss shepherd female is super dominant? Thanks for answering.
@@toverpam if it’s since puppy I believe it can be managed , an. Adult female not a good idea but since a puppy I believe it’s manageable
@@EliteBoerboels Yes I'm thinking of getting a puppy, thanks again. Meanwhile I'll keep learning from your videos, but the more i watch them the more i want to add 1 more member to the pack 😂
@@toverpam awesome , I guess I’m doing a good job on this videos ah ah
Anyone cross them both?boerboel and alabai?
Not that know of but I’ll do it :)
@@EliteBoerboels wow great....both breeds look promising as both are very healthy breeds

If you get a Boerboel as a puppy can you socialize with other dogs of the same sex and expect them to get along?
Depend on many factors , are they males ? If so not easy however if no females atounf and one is submisse possible , females just make sure to watch out for heats usually possible
@@EliteBoerboels
I have one male and one female. She is the alpha over the male. He is pretty submissive pitbull.
@@ChrisJones-zg3wr all good
No worries
I’m África no one ir almost no one work with boerboels nowadays :)
Ah wow! So you mean not even use them to guard the property?
By the way that’s for answering all of my questions and so quickly! It’s not common at all and I hope that you’ll gain numbers but still be able to answer the comments😂
One last question: do you know about any Italian boerboels breed and if so is it good? Otherwise would you suggest me to get the puppy shipped? Cause I know they can be traumatized…
@@lorenzoruggi762 I guess they have guard dogs but not worked

I've never seen or heard of a Alabai that's a 100 kg! 75-80 kgs yes but not above that.
Parents of my dogs have more then 100 kg and my males also :)
@@EliteBoerboels What? really thats 224 pounds! I'm amazed. I'll have to look at videos of your dogs. Never new CAS got that big. I'm thinking of getting one myself, I live in NYC
There are some videos on the internet of Alabai that are clearly around that weight. Pretty ridiculous, tbh.
@@EliteBoerboels At that size, are they still agile? Can they still run and have good endurance?
@@peter-lin yes … you have no idea they are like big cats
Alabai (Alabay,) Kangal etc. are bred by Turks as shepherd dogs. They are very independent and even stubborn, therefore they are hard to train, but they are great as shepherd dogs.
If you do not have a lot of space and livestock, then these dogs are not good for you.
Boerboel rules over all
The African mastiff is the largest and heaviest dog on earth.
Stop being racist even to dogs.
Wtf are you talking about ? Lol
@EliteBoerboels
The English mastiff is the only dog that can be compared or rather be a bit heavier than that S.A mastiff.
In general,the boerboel is dominant..
Given Alabai's guarding and territorial instincts, would it be ok to put them in a doggie hotel while the owner is on vacation? Are they less aggressive when they're not in their territory?
Yes they are , will depend a lot on your specific dog, I had littsrs where one is a big teddy bear and other a complete devil , depend on each one nature and also the education they get
I believe your breeding standards in regard to weight and height is greatly overestimated for the Alabai ?
Yes , this dogs are very big , and there are different lines alsi the ones I have are giants, line of jafar and Rasputin
Zco4eju
One is a guard one is a herding dog. So guard dog will guard your house and won't let any stranger near your house but alabai will chase to kill if someone breaks into your property so borboel is a better dog with better trainability and they are not too dominant to family.
He's wrong in that not all Alabais get to that size. Most Alabais are much smaller. But the purebred Boerboel is very true to form. It's hard to see a Boerboel which is out of breed standard
Alabais are pretty big and beautiful but unlike boerboels they are independent lgd guard dogs and do not make good pets.
Great video, thank you. And what about intelligence, an A or a B?
Cant decide , boerboel way easier to teach however that don’t necessarily mean intelligence so can’t say one is more or less intelligent then the other
@@EliteBoerboels Thank you.
