  • Answering Subscribers Questions, this time Pablo has asked Us to Test two Jeyi Heatsinks. First up in this Video, JEYI M.2 Aluminum FinsCold iGlacier8 Heatsink using the WD Black SN850 on the Gigabyte TRX40 Designare Motherboard for PCIe 4.0. We're an Unboxing, Inspection, Installation and Test. We even measured the Thermal Pads for thickness. We spent way too much time messing with the Thermal Pads. However, the Results are fascinating! As Pablo said, someone has to beat the Acidalie! We also look at the WD Black SN850 Specs for Heat. The Heatsink chart is Updated to now include 13 Heatsinks and 3 Quad Adapters from ASUS, Gigabyte and ASRock. And the Firmware has been applied to the WD Black SN850 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. That was required to restore performance on the WD Black SN850 M.2 Drive while on the Gigabyte Quad M.2 x16 AIC. The Tests have had to be modified as Subscribers have asked about other options such as a Heatsink for a Laptop and a Heatsink for a PS5. No, this will not work on a PS5. Whereas the Jeyi Copper Finscold Q150 will fit IF the cover is left off.

      Welcome! We had no idea what to expect when asked about Heatsinks for dual M.2 NVMe Adapters then what about on the Motherboard. So We started Testing! Fascinating Results.     I'd recommend binning the pads that come with it and use 20x120mm 1mm and 0.5mm arctic silver pad or some other name brand. On the Samsung SSDs you use the 1mm on the back and on the memory controller and the 0.5mm on the memory chips. You also need to compress the assembly while screwing it together, I used a 15 lb weight and a small aluminum block on top of the heatsink and set one end on top of it and then tightened the screws. Also the sticker makes very little difference maybe 1 degree, apparently it's actually a copper foil heat spreader. The heatsink actually raises the temp of the memory chips while lowering the temp of the memory controller, however this isn't a bad thing it's actually better for flash memory chips to be warm when operating.

    My understanding is that the red pad is intended to go on the bottom of the SSD if there are no chips on the back. If there are chips on the back you would use the blue on both sides and you can use the cut squares to put directly on each individual chip. You may or may not use them all.

      Welcome! Correct! Single sided vs Double sided M.2 NVMe. We prefer solid continuous Thermal Pads. Easier to work with. All higher end replacement Thermal Pads, that We are aware of, are continuous. Appreciate Your Comments! Thanks for Watching!

      Is the red pad meant to be a thermal pad too? Mine only came with a peel off sticker on the white side which I'm guessing sticks to the nvme and the red makes contact with the bottom plate? I have a single sided pcie4 nvme drive but wondering if it's better to use both blues as Gil has done here regardless of if single or double sideded.

      @@krackpot_ I just got it and the red one is weird, I would not use that on a double sided ssd
      it has very different structure to all the thermal pads I've seen
      if you're single sided then I guess it's just a short protection and you can use it but since they give you two thermal pads I would just use those....the thicker one on the side that is more uneven
      the bottom bracket is so thin that I don't think it can really transfer any heat to the heatsink anyway

    Hello, I just watched your video, I have now also ordered this cooler for my operating system SSD on the motherboard. I would have mounted it differently, removed the sticker, and put the small pads directly on the control chip and memory, or even with paste. The big pad down. But no matter, the large cooler has great cooling potential.

    I'm 62 now and before I order anything I always watch videos of the products. Your video here, and then I ordered!
    I've been involved in the entire computer development process, I always assemble all of my computers myself, and I'm very knowledgeable, including software.
    I don't pay attention to brands, I have my products that are very good and work well. I order almost everything from China.
    I always use GIGABYTE motherboards and AMD CPUs.
    And memory and RAM from NETAC, they always have Samsung chips on them, that's the best product.

      Welcome. Good question. Yes they are sufficient. However, for better results, there are other aftermarket Thermal Pads that will be more effective. There are Silicone Thermal Pads and Clay like Thermal Pads. The former are somewhat reusable whereas the latter fall apart upon removal but are the most effective. We have videos on both.       @@BuildOrBuy I have a quick question, I have a Samsung 990 pro and everything seems nice and flat on this model, which thickness of Thermal pad is best to use, is 1 mm sufficient at the top? and how many mm at the bottom of the SSD? is thinner better? Also bought a JEYI M.2 Aluminum FinsCold iGlacier8.

      1mm is sufficient on top. If there is a Thermal Pad on the bottom it will be thinner. Thickness depending upon what's allowed withing the M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drive Heatsink wrap around. Most Heatsinks only use a Thermal Pad on top. It's about cooling the Controller but all M.2 Heatsinks are full length. And your next question, yes we leave the labels on by choice so when we disassemble we know we can still read what M.2 Drive we're using.

    I've got one wd850 with the factory heat sync and one that's bare. I go pretty easy on them. Now you've got me interested what the delta is between the two during a stress test.

    Awesome! I bumped into this one as well. I’m excited to see the other copper Jeyi that came in the package. It looks like the smaller version. The larger one someone has ps5 install pics on their Amazon review. The M.2 case door isn’t on, but it still fits with the ps5 faceplate on😅

    I think it probably would've been easier to place the thermal pads on the SSD first, then peeling off the clear plastic on the other side and placing it on the cooler. Then you don't need to trim the sides and it's not as fiddly.

    just got one of these to go with my 990 pro. I checked and it *should* fit in my motherboard slot fine without interfering with the graphics card or the cpu cooler, but i'll see when it gets here

    Thank you for all this testing. I've recently upgraded from 2x Samsung 970 Evo 500GB with third-party heatsinks. (Each had a melted rubber band after a few months use - both drives are fine, I just need more space)
    I've ordered a WD Black SN850 1TB, and a Sabrent Rocket 2TB. They are installed using a DIMM.2 card (PCIe3), leaving me with limited space either side.
    Could you please test a two different Thermalright m.2 heatsinks? One seems to have a single heatpipe. They say they'll cool by 10-20C.

      You do know even though You have a new PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD Drive, based on Your Description of PCIe 3.0, that's going to be the speed of the Drive which will be 3,500MBps instead of 7,000MBps. Just so You know.

      Welcome. Thank You. Good Heatsink. Good question. In a Parallel install, not an issue. In a Perpendicular install, over time, I would be concerned. However, Depends on the stability of the M.2 NVMe PCB. That one small screw attachment point of the M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drive on one end and the Connector on the other end. Two stress points of concern. Only one way to find out.

    I got this one labelled as Axagon CLR-M2XL and little disappointed
    the top part is great....massive aluminium heatsink that will surely outperform anything "normal sized" but the lower part is so thin that I don't think it will do much for cooling the back side of my Firecude 530 and transfer of heat from the back chips to the heatsink
    still better then what I have now, but still not the perfect M.2 heatsink

      Sorry for not responding sooner! UA-cam has held back several Comments and today they all showed up! We try to respond within 48 hours! I very much agree with You on all of that! We never know what to expect! Cut thermal pads are tedious and a hassle to install. Results were great and unexpected but this is not a practical solution. My preference is till the Acidalie even though it too cannot be used everywhere! We've now Testing 14 Heatsinks! Wow! And We expect there to be more! We can see as We go faster, We get hotter! And We expect Vendors will be addressing this issue. Based on Our Results, that too may be questionable. We shall see! Stay Tuned!

    How long do you run the drive for?
    That Acidalie 2 pipe looks like a big chunk of metal so its thermal mass would be excellent at eating up burst of heat but with much less surface area than the iglacier8, it'd be worse at dissipating it.

      That helped a lot as it sealed my choice to gen3.
      I'm trying to keep noise and therefore thermals down on my upcoming 100gbe NAS so I'll just stripe them and +1 with a fat SATA backup.

      Welcome! These Tests were of 14 M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsinks and 3 Thermal Pads as requested by Subscribers to Test. For those 2, the Acidalie was 1st whereas the JEYI iGlacier8 was 2nd down the line. For each, to prefer one over the other would be personal Preference if You have the Overhead space to accommodate either of them. Hope that helps! Thanks for Asking!

    I had to use an alternative pad for the controller than the NAND with mine. I’m using a WD_Black SN750 500Gb. The heat sink sat at different heights on each of those chips. I guess I was being picky but for mine the heat sink wouldn’t have been level on the chips. Due to space in my case, the heat sink is flush to the backplate on my GTX1650SUPER OC that is running an overclock of about 150-250MHz. The card runs cool, and since my case is actually upside down- intake is at the top front, and exhaust is out the bottom back- so the graphics card is actually Above the CPU, and therefore Above the SSD. Should I active cool it with one or two 20-30mm fans?(either twin on the top of the heat sink- like a twin fan GPU, or on the side of the heatsink- like a blower style GPU(would possibly even use a 20-30mm wide blower))

      Welcome! Just niow seing Your message! Appreciate Your Comments! Heat will not be as big adeal with PCIe 3.0 as it is going forward with PCIe 4.0 and beyond. We also had a slight height difference. The 1mm Thermal Pad was perfect to allow for that minor height difference for Us.
      As for Active Cooling with Fans, You want to balance the pressure so Your PC Build does not become a dust bunny magnet! Remember, larger Fans move more air and are quieter. Whereas smaller fans make more noise. If You opt for Fans, At least 80mm or 120mm. Either Case Fans or an I/O Card Slot Fan. If You have a Thermistor Heat Sensor, then from there You can monitor the differences. Hope that helps!

    Seems to work okay but I don't like the fact that the QR code goes to the WeChat app download and not instructions. Also some of the screws weren't threaded correctly and difficult to install.
    Yeah, the red one is for the bottom and the individual squares are if you have an SSD where you want to place one on each chip and the controller.

      @@BuildOrBuy The good part is that I did get it installed and it dropped the overall temperatures about 10°C from the built-in solid metal motherboard covers. Whatever you call them. I got two of these and the second one also had difficulty with a couple of the screws. I just screwed them in and out a few times and they seem to be working okay now.

      @@BuildOrBuy The ones on the motherboard are pretty big but they're low profile and don't really have any fins. I do worry about the new ones while they do offer better temps. I think you have to be a lot more careful while working inside the computer. If you bump them, they're probably going to break the m.2 socket. Being so tall it gives them a lot of leverage.

    I heard somewhere them pads are so you can place them directly on the chips and nothing else ,obviously you would have to take the sticker off though

      Correct. However, that would require using the thinnest Thermal Pad on the Bottom instead of the thicker Thermal Pad We used. Furthermore, Yes as You have stated, that would require removing the Label which We do not do. With all of the Testing and Swapping of Drives, We would not be able to keep up who is on first!       Hi@@jerrysberrys3415, Great idea. However we expect to have more Heatsinks to Test. We've already made alterations by Updating the Firmware on the WD Black SN850 to restore Performance on the Gigabyte Aorus M.2 x16 Quad card. We had the same problem as exhibited on x570 chipsets, a degradation in speed. And that's the Drive that runs the hottest until We can Test a PCIe, 3rd Generation M.2 NVMe Drive. The 1stvthing to do would be to change the Thermal Pads. We will do that on the top 2 or 3 Heatsinks eventually.

      We thought when We were at 6 Heatsinks, that was it. Then more Heatsinks were added. And now We're at 14 Heatsinks. Amazing response! I'm eager to see that too! One Subscriber contacted Acidalie and found out they use a Thermal Pad with a rating of 2 W/mK. Now that's a definite and easy change to make! We know of other Vendors who use a 4 W/mK Thermal Pad. We'll get there! Probably 3 or 4 Thermal Pads based on W/mK values on the top 3 Heatsinks. Fascinating Results! Appreciate Your Support!

    Hi Gil. I have been following your UA-cam channel for about 2 month or so now. Your videos have been eXtremely informative and have helped me to select two different M.2 heatsinks (an Acidalie and a Jeyi FinsCold iGlacier8) for a new rig I am building.
    Anyway, I came across another dude's channel and he had an interesting methodology for applying thermal pads of different thicknesses because the thicknesses of the NANDs and the controller chips are different. What are your thoughts on this?

And I don't know when or if they show up. There are about 6 ways to check Comments. And We're not always notified about all Comments. Anyway, to Your Question and Comment...
      We've been talking about that very subject. First We need to establish stock Device parameters. Then as to the Pads efficacy either of different thicknesses and or Thermal Pads with different Thermal properties or W/mK values. Possibly a mix. And We'll have to use a Drive that has 2 Thermistors, one for the Memory and one for the Memory Controller. Hence the Samsung 980 Pro since the WD Black SN 880 only has 1 Thermistor. Details matter!     So much talk and it was difficult to cut the thermal pads on the steel bottom plate. So that they do not curl vertically, which may cause poor adhesion of the upper aluminum heat sink and bend the thin PCB of the SSD drive.
