Yeah I remember the time I used to practice Kung Fu with traditional weapons. My sensei Pa Chong taught me vast number of techniques using different traditional weapons. I consider myself to be a master of these crafts, but I still have a lot to learn about chain whip. I have hit my head and neck area over 150 times while practicing this technique. Although I have lost vision in my left eye and hearing in my right ear, with minor cosmetic injuries I still believe that the Chain Whip is one of the best defensive weapons out there. I have practiced Chain Whip to the point where my scrotum has become physically detached from my lower body. I believe this to be a sign of greatness. With great power comes great knowledge about ones own body. I do not need my scrotum, as sexual organs are there just to distract us from training harder. Everyday I get up from my bed with the help of four crutches, this still will not stop me from fully mastering the Chain Whip weapon. Keep up the greatness Master Jake Mace! i take the subway everyday, i couldn't imagine not having my deadly chain whip with me. why just the other day i had to come to the aid of an old beggar woman being harrassed by some neighborhood hoodlums. if not for my deadly chain whip she would have been a victim. sure i got on the subway looking to be a hero, and sure most people would say it's not generally considered self-defense to use a chain-whip on a 12yo punk, but justice must be served
actually thinking about it, greaser clothing choice would pair up great with a chain. the denim or leather jacket, jeans and tough boots or shoes would help pad the chain's impact on the user.

I hate the argument people use “Oh what if the other guy’s got a gun?” Yeah no shit, of course a guy with a gun would beat a guy with a chain. But the importance of learning the chain, nunchuck, sword, bo staff, etc is to create variety for yourself. You May find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself, and you can use your surroundings as weapons because of the variety you’ve learned and practiced. Never limit yourself to one technique or weapon. You will find yourself in a situation where one technique/weapon may not work, so you’ll have to use the next best one you know.
I really enjoyed your video. Much appreciated for sharing your knowledge, ensuring that traditional techniques won't die if one person keeps them in their heart. Aside from that, being a practitioner of mainly Japanese traditional skills, your video is beneficial for my training of chain/rope tools. It only takes 10lbs/sq inch to break your skull bone at the temple. 20lb at the center of the forehead. The Force behind the strike tip of that chain is probably around 800-1000/pounds per sq inch. I would make My Own helmet with a face plate to practice with that chain. It only takes One, accident, to make you half brain dead instantly it break out your teeth and jaw. That probably happens once every 10,000 practices. You may already be up to 8000 practice sessions.
I built all of my own soft weapons (Which I started shortly after realizing my manrikigasai is illegal to carry and wanted to make legal versions of the same weapons) and the dojo I was part of closed down long before I ever started studying martial arts weaponry. I really appreciate your videos and the demonstrations of others, I used those to figure out as much as I can and the rest comes from my poor friends who let me use them as practice dummies.

This is just a massive stick that can ALSO come back to smack your shins. The way you're swaying, it looks like you're absolutely wrecking your wrists. Any faster and you'd be in danger of breaking some bones. Your bones. And the thing is, the soft weapons are all about speed. Precision. Versatility and retrievability. The rope and its skillful manipulation around the body are the core of practice, with the head holding practically all of the weight and power. It takes years more to truly master them compared to other weapons. What you have is a weapon meant for a biker that can already throw you like a ragdoll. If you want to carry that around your waist on your next night out, sure, but you'd be better off with a lead pipe at that level of practice. Lastly, work on that attitude, man. I really believe Chinese martial arts are dying out. Yes, they are present in forms but I believe the application are lost. I have respect for what you do because I spent about 15 yrs in the arts myself. I had a brief friendship with an elderly Chinese man I met in a local park. He could barely speak English but taught me for three or four months and then he moved. Real Chinese martial arts are deadly, beautiful, and advanced. And they work but you have to train hard. To me it is harder to develop the skill in these arts but no one can tell me that Kung fu wasn’t deadly. This was Baguazhang, Tai chi, and another internal art. These were used to dispatch quickly, breaking joints, necks, striking vitals, controlling with chin na. You couldn’t spar or grapple on the ground, you would catch a spear or sword through the back. it was good enough for the Chinese emperial army to protect the emperor of China but you have all these kids on here, disrespectful , leaving idiotic comments. These people don’t deserve to know the real arts. I respect what you are doing.

I don't care how cool it looks or traditional/cultural it is there is no possible situation where it would be practical or efficient to wrap it around your body and especially your neck, thats just moronic and thats putting it nicely.
I perform with poi -- those swinging balls on a string, one in each hand, which we set on fire and draw light patterns with. Sometimes I think about what their pros and cons would be as weapons. I concluded they would be incredibly versatile for self defense, and their biggest weakness would be human pattern-recognition. If I fought someone with a strong sense of math/timing recognition (like a musician who could pick up a tune by ear, maybe) they could could analyze my patterns very quickly; if they'd watched a video of me fighting or watched me fend off other people before him, they would be able to calculate the openings in my defense and exploit them. This video is helpful because it gets me thinking about the sporadic movements and anti-predictable martial mentality I would need to create an impenetrable defense (which is not the point with poi at all, but interesting to contemplate).

i watch all your videos mace, but i have a question, how come someone whos always talking about traditional chinese martial arts, we never see a video of you in a traditional kung fu class, or a kung fu sparring tournament, or really anything that resambles what you see in any traditional martial arts, even at an amateur level, how come we never see you training in a class with your master? or how come when you have a student its only one, and to be honest they always seem to have prior knowledge about what they are doing, yeah i saw the one about the fat guy that you trained, but to be honest looked like fitness class rather than martial arts, im not a hater or anything im just curious , i heard you talk so much about traditional styles, but i dont see any of that on you

Question: How do you define a weapon, any weapon , as being the most deadly? I'm not trolling you here, this is a genuine question. The way i see it , there are a lot of weapons that can kill much quicker than a chain, even if that chain has a knife at the tip. I also think that any weapon that has the potential to kill is considered a deadly weapon, so this brings me back to the actual question, how do you define the chain whip as being the MOST deadly? If i didn't believe that you have actual skills and that you are a true martial artist, i would've started this comment with something like , "Clickbait". That being said, your demonstration was pretty impressive and i do have a lot of respect for your skills. This video even makes me wanna start training using a chain for self defense. Though i am convinced that it is a deadly weapon, i still wouldn't go as far as saying that it is the MOST deadly. If it can kill, then it is deadly but no weapon can send an opponent passed the point of death. A person cannot be deader than dead. On that matter i think that your title was chosen to catch some extra views and every youtuber who do that kinda tickle me the wrong way.
I'd like to see that in an actual fight, get close and one powerful hit from this is game over. Without weapons getting hit isn't the end of the world, but you have to remember this has power

I started watching your vids for the Bo staff initially but when I saw your chain whip videos I remembered I was actually gifted one a few years back. I was like "I HAVE ONE OF THOSE!" It is too my favorite weapon now.
Yo this is my first ever video I watch from you and I thought first that you where some noob trying to look cool because you wing a chain, because I practice with myself and a wooden sword, and stick from the age of 5 and when I grew older I also tried diffrent weapons. The chain was one of them and when I saw you doing the control and break the swing I was like, well I can do that as well so that's not that special, But when you let the chain under you're arm and over you're neck my eyes went wide open and I was like: alright, not something I can do and you're doing just fine where you standing. This is about as useful in a real fight as capoeira. You might get a couple of hits in with that chain before you are taken to the ground. When that happens, you might not want to be the fragile, thin guy with a chain in his hand relying on silly "Gong Fu" to save your ass.
Couple of hits with that chain is more than enough to incapacitate you lol. If i had a guaranteed 3-4 hits what that chain, i'd take that over any ground fight.
I have actually trained with a chain for many years, that one is too heavy and too long to be a practical weapon. I practice maneuvers that make fighting sense.
Its just training. Consider it weight training. You practice with higher resistance than normal, so when you switch to a lighter weapon you get increased speed.
Couple things first this is a demonstration video the point is to show you techniques not be fancy. 2 his chains actually shorter than a lot of chain whips
Not a fan of the chain whip or 3 section staff myself. Once they connect they are unpredictable as to where they will go. Very hard to tame! Nice skills though Jake, that chain looks heavy!
That's why you have to train stopping the momentum and recovering it so often. After a hit if you can't keep it swinging you immediately recover it. The main strength of chain style weapons are range and unpredictable strikes. They lull you into a rhythm then change it up to catch you off guard. If they can catch you with the tricks then its no big deal to recover and restart. If you can beat the tricks, then yeah big disadvantage, so they have to retreat and try to reset or advance inside the range of your weapon.

I hate the argument people use “Oh what if the other guy’s got a gun?” Yeah no shit, of course a guy with a gun would beat a guy with a chain. But the importance of learning the chain, nunchuck, sword, bo staff, etc is to create variety for yourself. You May find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself, and you can use your surroundings as weapons because of the variety you’ve learned and practiced. Never limit yourself to one technique or weapon. You will find yourself in a situation where one technique/weapon may not work, so you’ll have to use the next best one you know.

It only takes 10lbs/sq inch to break your skull bone at the temple. 20lb at the center of the forehead. The Force behind the strike tip of that chain is probably around 800-1000/pounds per sq inch. I would make My Own helmet with a face plate to practice with that chain. It only takes One, accident, to make you half brain dead instantly it break out your teeth and jaw. That probably happens once every 10,000 practices. You may already be up to 8000 practice sessions.
I built all of my own soft weapons (Which I started shortly after realizing my manrikigasai is illegal to carry and wanted to make legal versions of the same weapons) and the dojo I was part of closed down long before I ever started studying martial arts weaponry. I really appreciate your videos and the demonstrations of others, I used those to figure out as much as I can and the rest comes from my poor friends who let me use them as practice dummies.

This is just a massive stick that can ALSO come back to smack your shins. The way you're swaying, it looks like you're absolutely wrecking your wrists. Any faster and you'd be in danger of breaking some bones. Your bones. And the thing is, the soft weapons are all about speed. Precision. Versatility and retrievability. The rope and its skillful manipulation around the body are the core of practice, with the head holding practically all of the weight and power. It takes years more to truly master them compared to other weapons. What you have is a weapon meant for a biker that can already throw you like a ragdoll. If you want to carry that around your waist on your next night out, sure, but you'd be better off with a lead pipe at that level of practice. Lastly, work on that attitude, man. Quit touting yourself so highly.

I really believe Chinese martial arts are dying out. Yes, they are present in forms but I believe the application are lost. I have respect for what you do because I spent about 15 yrs in the arts myself. I had a brief friendship with an elderly Chinese man I met in a local park. He could barely speak English but taught me for three or four months and then he moved. Real Chinese martial arts are deadly, beautiful, and advanced. And they work but you have to train hard. To me it is harder to develop the skill in these arts but no one can tell me that Kung fu wasn’t deadly. This was Baguazhang, Tai chi, and another internal art. These were used to dispatch quickly, breaking joints, necks, striking vitals, controlling with chin na. You couldn’t spar or grapple on the ground, you would catch a spear or sword through the back. it was good enough for the Chinese emperial army to protect the emperor of China but you have all these kids on here, disrespectful , leaving idiotic comments. These people don’t deserve to know the real arts. I respect what you are doing.

The "show skills" are never useful if a real fight, but, reality is that a chain, well used, it's the most mortal weapon you can use for a fight.
I perform with poi -- those swinging balls on a string, one in each hand, which we set on fire and draw light patterns with. Sometimes I think about what their pros and cons would be as weapons. I concluded they would be incredibly versatile for self defense, and their biggest weakness would be human pattern-recognition. If I fought someone with a strong sense of math/timing recognition (like a musician who could pick up a tune by ear, maybe) they could could analyze my patterns very quickly; if they'd watched a video of me fighting or watched me fend off other people before him, they would be able to calculate the openings in my defense and exploit them. This video is helpful because it gets me thinking about the sporadic movements and anti-predictable martial mentality I would need to create an impenetrable defense (which is not the point with poi at all, but interesting to contemplate).

Question: How do you define a weapon, any weapon , as being the most deadly? I'm not trolling you here, this is a genuine question.
The way i see it , there are a lot of weapons that can kill much quicker than a chain, even if that chain has a knife at the tip.
I also think that any weapon that has the potential to kill is considered a deadly weapon, so this brings me back to the actual question, how do you define the chain whip as being the MOST deadly?
If i didn't believe that you have actual skills and that you are a true martial artist, i would've started this comment with something like , "Clickbait".
That being said, your demonstration was pretty impressive and i do have a lot of respect for your skills. This video even makes me wanna start training using a chain for self defense.
Though i am convinced that it is a deadly weapon, i still wouldn't go as far as saying that it is the MOST deadly.
If it can kill, then it is deadly but no weapon can send an opponent passed the point of death. A person cannot be deader than dead.

Yo this is my first ever video I watch from you and I thought first that you where some noob trying to look cool because you wing a chain, because I practice with myself and a wooden sword, and stick from the age of 5 and when I grew older I also tried diffrent weapons. The chain was one of them and when I saw you doing the control and break the swing I was like, well I can do that as well so that's not that special, But when you let the chain under you're arm and over you're neck my eyes went wide open and I was like: alright, not something I can do and you're doing just fine where you standing.

This is about as useful in a real fight as capoeira. You might get a couple of hits in with that chain before you are taken to the ground. When that happens, you might not want to be the fragile, thin guy with a chain in his hand relying on silly "Gong Fu" to save your ass.

I have actually trained with a chain for many years, that one is too heavy and too long to be a practical weapon. I practice maneuvers that make fighting sense.

Its just training. Consider it weight training. You practice with higher resistance than normal, so when you switch to a lighter weapon you get increased speed.
Couple things first this is a demonstration video the point is to show you techniques not be fancy. 2 his chains actually shorter than a lot of chain whips

It takes practice, you can get to the point where you can predict where it goes. Even gangsters back in the day used to brawl with chains
That's why you have to train stopping the momentum and recovering it so often. After a hit if you can't keep it swinging you immediately recover it. The main strength of chain style weapons are range and unpredictable strikes. They lull you into a rhythm then change it up to catch you off guard. If they can catch you with the tricks then its no big deal to recover and restart. If you can beat the tricks, then yeah big disadvantage, so they have to retreat and try to reset or advance inside the range of your weapon.
I suggest going with an aluminum chain. That way if your fighting in the rain, it won't rust.
