In fact, the bottom tab rotates for attachment. Then allows right and left side use. This is the case with all of my Ontario knife sheaths. Thanks for showing and sharing, I particularly like the idea of slightly thinning the blade at the cutting edge. Cheers Torsten
Thanks for the video I'm liking the look of the way you've ground away the coating it looks a lot better, I'm sure the sp-53 gen 2 is made from 5160 steel though
it was originally. the whole gen 2 series was. the 53 is the only one sadly that wasn't discontinued years back. on top of that, ontario knife company has been bought out (happened around the time this video was released) so now they're all kind of discontinued currently. thankfully i was able to snatch one the old 5160 versions of this last year on ebay
Thanks for a good review . I have the SP-10 and it is a massive and impressive Bowie . Lots of steel and fun to own . Some day I may try the bolo . Best respects to you and yours .
I must have a older 1, sheath is totally different. right side of blade 5160 OKC-USA. ( no Bolo ) on it. I still Love mine though. I gave up carrying a hatchet , to have this. My companion knife is a Garburg SS, : )
My older one says : 5160 Ontario Knife - USA (on right) SP-53 Bolo (on left) Bought on Amazon 3/2019 It has worked great. Hacked and batoned through tough mesquite logs. I sharpened the bottom 3 inches at 20 degrees for fine work. Mine measures 6mm on the spine, slightly less than 1/4" - 0.236". I tied my Mora Robust onto the sheath. I would rather have a 3.5" scandi for easier carving/notching and save some weight.
Good Video....I got mine two weeks Ago...you said yours is a Gen 2 and its Printed on the Knife....but mine don't say Gen 2 on the Knife...so I think my is the Gen 1....I picked this up at a Army surpluse Store....I think I lucked out getting the Gen 1 with 1095 steel...
@@hillbillydude been wanting one I just keep asking myself if there is something else in my kit I’m deficient in and I always pass it up when I’ve got the money
It is a chopping beast! Do you find it difficult to sharpen? It's a large heavy knife and I'd love to get some hints and methods. I want the belly to stay a chopper and a few inches near the handle for carving (feather sticks, etc). I took all of the powder coating off of mine.
Just use a Lansky clamp. I upgraded the Lansky stones to DMT Aligner using the small replaceable DMT Aligner stones. Better diamond and wider. Only need one aligner. Get the black extra coarse (220) to set up the angles and finish with the blue coarse (325) , red fine (600) and green extra fine (1200). I set the bottom 3 inches to 20 degrees per side and the rest to 25 or 30 degrees. On this wide a blade, you have to measure the distances and run an arc tan to get the actual angle. You can't use the marked angles since the blade is so big it throws off the measurement.

I've only ever seen the SP 53 listed as a saber grind. The SP 52 is the exact same pattern with a flat grind.
It's a beautifully designed knife, suitable for hiking and camping. How many inches wide is the blade?
