I used to be proud to be British because we used to have morals and standards that were recognised and admired around the world. To see what we have become now is embarrassing to me . Our leadership is a disgrace and the respect I feel we once had is not there anymore
I'm surprised that he was proud of his family's mining heritage, he comes across as the type of person that would have complained about them adding to man made climate change.
The first nation to abolish slavery at home was France. The abolition of the slave trade was largely Britain's (still they weren't even the first nation to do that) doing, but they still kept slaves at home and abroad.
@@gaiusoctavius5935 The first nation to abolish slavery at home was England in 1080. Then quote: "In 1102 the ecclesiastical Council of London banned the slave trade within England, decreeing “Let no one dare hereafter to engage in the infamous business … of selling men like animals.” Quote: "The 1772 Somersett case established that slavery did not exist in English law." France abolished slavery for France & her colonies in 1848, after Napoleon had started it again.
I'm not sure what the first guy was referring to regarding foreign policy and refugees (economic migrants and criminals), the UK hasn't meddled in Albania
The second young man saying, 'What is there [in Western countries] to be proud of?'. I cannot believe how someone could be so blinded. There are multitudes of things to be proud of as a Westerner.
I was proud to be British, indeed I would go further and say I was proud to be English! But now I have pride in what *has* been done in generations past rather than what is being done now. A thousand years of advances and creativity that gave birth to the entire modern world being thrown away by career politicians who, when it all falls down, will simply flee with the wealth they have fleeced from the tax payer.
No country is perfect, anyone who doesn't like it though is free to leave, some people don't realise how privileged we are. Second guy was the ultimate beta male
The first guy has swallowed the rhetoric and failed to understand the cause and facts of mass migration. The second guy sounds as though he's a very hardworking diligent person who contributes positively to our country! My mind boggles at the actual ignorance of these people.
I'm extremely proud to be British. And there can be a difference between being proud and being arrogant. You can be simultaneously proud and *good,* or proud and *kind,* or proud and *co-operative.* I don't see why some people view patriotism as a bad thing; it's akin to self confidence.
I used to be proud to be English up to before the 1980s, probably. It seemed, overall, to be a friendly, contented country. Even though we didn't have money, or modern technology, or big medical advancements, as a country it felt like people were generally happy and at ease. People laughed together a lot, greeted each other warmly in the street, and it was just a friendly place. After that it gradually changed where people became increasingly cynical and seemingly complained about everything they could. Social media arrived after the Internet launched, and somewhere along the line the country has lost its unifying sense of humour, sense of proportion and sense of forgiveness, and seems currently to be driven by fakery and mistrust more than anything else. Somewhere along the line we seem to have lost truthfulness, freedom, and free speech, which is weird. Servicemen fought in the last world war against fascists to keep those things, but it hasn't worked. Not sure how or when this all changed, but it happened gradually and wasn't caused by a specific event that I'm aware of, and the reasons are maybe a question for social scientists. I pity the current generation having to grow up in this weird, very bipolar world. I wonder how future generations will feel about this era, looking back? However, it's not all bad. As social movements generally go in cycles, maybe given enough time we'll find some way as a country to pull together and recapture our good-natured bonhomie again. I have hope. :-)
The second guy , seriously. He might be proud of his family being miners, so were mine. But I doubt he'd last 5 minutes down a pit. Luckily he has that choice in this country. His dad sounds like a sound man. The other lads were sound as a pound. The Nike top lad ...I'd have a pint with him. He's got it together with his views. Good interviews.
Proud to be British yes. Although extremely unhappy with Britain today. Such a weak crop running this place right now. Team red and team blue are both useless.
m proud to be ENGLISH, being Britiah is a modern invention. Its an invention of equality and inclusion, and deletes my nationality. The English flag isn't even in my choice of flag emoji, like i said deleted.
Proud to be living in a safe country. Our past was not just due to our empire. There are many countries who have had empires but it's always the British Empire that takes a battering from people. People go on about colonialism, but that always happens with empire. There have been many countries who have had empires, Roman Empire, French, German, Spanish, Austrian, etc. Yes, for one of the smallest nations on the planet, we had the greatest and biggest empire the world has ever seen, that's just a fact. There are many, and many have been barbaric, worse than us, far worse! Our ancestors fought for our freedoms. Can people not be proud of them? No country has a good past in everything, but there must be good things that all nations have done. To not be proud of your own country shows not enough thought or research into what we have done as a nation, is a sad thing. During 2 world wars the nation came together, and yet today there is no unity. If people feel they can't be proud of our past, like giving the world the industrial revolution, spreading the gospel, the justice system, system of government, ending slavery etc, that's very sad. We led the world in invention for a time and still do good things in some areas. We led the world in liberating Europe during two world wars and defending freedom. There is so much to be proud of. I am not proud of everything of course, indeed some things I am ashamed of. It would be silly not to recognise that we have done some bad things, we cannot change history, but we must learn from our mistakes. This is still one of the best places to live. Maybe those who say they aren't proud of this country should look at some other poor nations for example, or those where wars are a regular occurrence, or where law and order is non-existent and then take a closer look at this country and it's achievements and how safe we are. Our engineering was second to none, in railway, aircraft especially in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, shipbuilding, tunnelling, etc. etc. I am proud of the good things we have done and what we gave to the world, and I'm unhappy about the bad things we did.
I am proud to be British. And I believe to be a patriotic, you need to constantly seek to improve your nation, because no nation is perfect. Highlighting flaws in your nation does not make you unpatriotic.
I think a lot of people confuse country with government, and that is truly sad. for all unwilling to read a grate deal I will give you this: “Never Forget. A country is it's people.- King Nefertari Cobra” Or as Mark Twain said in a letter once "For in a republic, who is "the Country"? Is it the Government which is for the moment in the saddle? Why, the Government is merely a servant- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them. Who, then, is "the Country"? Is it the newspaper? is it the pulpit? Is it the school superintendent? Why, these are mere parts of the country, not the whole of it; they have not command, they have only their little share in the command. They are but one in a thousand; it is in the thousand that command is lodged; they must determine what is right and what is wrong; they must decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Who are the thousand--that is to say, who are "the Country"? In a monarchy, the king and his family are the country; in a republic it is the common voice of the people. Each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. And it is a solemn and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catch-phrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide it against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have done your duty by yourself and by your country--hold up your head. You have nothing to be ashamed of. to be fair this is a very American eye on the matter, but I feel like is a sentiment many can share.
