The problem with the Union is that England is much larger by population and richer than the Celtic nations. What makes it worse is the dominance of London and a political system that mostly guarantees governments which reflects the views of southern England. Lots of people in Northern England feel disengaged as many Scots do
@grunyitmacquethal5519 Never say never. We could create a single tier of local government with regional bodies in England as they do in almost every European countries. Wales has a population smaller than Birmingham and that’s what they do. Members from the regional bodies and the Celtic nations could replace the unelected House of Lords so they are represented in Parliament whoever is in government. New Labour were planning something like this in 1997 but got cold feet.
@@ColmPadraigthe Celtic nations is just shorthand for Scotland, Wales and Ireland not a statement of ethnicity. This is a discussion about political power and representation not ethnicity and in any case the English nation is predominantly of Saxon origin.

@@ColmPadraig You are referring to the People of the British Isles study but have misread it. 40% of English people are indeed Saxon but that does not mean the rest are celts. If you read the research it is remarkable how much todays population corresponds with historical boundaries such as England and Wales etc
As an Irishman,i have to say after all these years of animosity between Ireland and England, things have finally been normalised. A lot of the credit for that must go to QE2 when she visited Ireland in 2012. The things she said ( she spoke Irish) and did while here won the hearts of the Irish people. As someone with a Scot's accent, but who's lived in England for over 30 years, I have never once been abused or criticised for being Scots. Personally I've received nothing but warmth and friendship. There is a difference politically as most Scots have a social conscience and lean to the left, whereas most English ( especially in The Midlands and South) tend to be more concerned with personal success and wealth. Northerners are more like The Scots as they believe in working to live and not the other way around. We are all blessed to be from the UK. Lang may yer lum reek ❤

Of course with any group, the Law of Averages says there are going to be those who do conform to any stereotypes there may be about that group, but that doesn't mean that most of that group conform to them. Out of all the people I know, both Scottish and English, if I was somehow unable to discern accents and whenever anyone told me where they were from, or gave other clues as to their origins, I instantly forgot it (like the guy from the film "Memento"!), I can honestly say that I doubt I could tell who was English and who was Scottish! Personally I agree with what I think George Bernard Shaw once said, namely "Patriotism is thinking that the place you come from is the best, because you happen to come from there!" I also have a German friend who tends to be late for everything and also has a good sense of humour, even thinking that the sick stuff I have told her that Jerry Sadowitz has said, when I have seen him live, is funny! I also have a Swedish friend who is one of the jolliest people you could ever meet, again dispelling stereotypes about gloomy Scandinavians! When I was young, I remember being caught up in all the excitement, hype and over confidence about the 1978 World Cup and the gloating that England hadn't qualified for the second successive time. However, thinking about it now, if the boot had been on the other foot and England had qualified and lots of English people gone on like we did, then there would be all the usual complaining about English arrogance etc.!

And do you remember the queen’s 25th, 50th and 60th accession anniversaries which were celebrated with public holidays, street parties and flags flying from every lamppost. The year 2007 saw the 300th anniversary of the union of England and Scotland - no parties, no flags, it barely got a mention in the press. It is not a celebrated union either side of the border and hasn't been for some time. In the last election the Welsh electorate voted in a majority of Labour MPs, the Northern Irish voted away from unionist parties and in Scotland the conservatives lost more than half their seats. The English, meanwhile, overwhelmingly voted for a particularly right wing conservative and unionist party. So, politically at least, we are very much not "as one". So glad to see a sensible response from yourself, as opposed to the xenophobic stupidity of some other comments, which doesn't help anybody. I'm Scottish (Glasgow) and have many English friends who have lived in the West of Scotland for many years and who have made a real contribution to their local (i.e., Scottish) community. It didn't even begin to cross their minds that they were 'different' from the locals, they just got on with their teaching, nursing and other jobs because they were part of a community and would have done the same wherever their life-path took them. So, the lesson is, stuff so-called 'nationality' and just consider other people and your own sense of decency.

@grunyitmacquethal5519 Never say never. We could create a single tier of local government with regional bodies in England as they do in almost every European countries. When I was young, I was really anti English. I was just a kid at the time and heard some others coming out with anti English stuff and just went along with it, without thinking about whether it was true, or not.

Have you ever watched footage of the 1966 World Cup. English fans, to a man, proudly waving union flags. You'll have a job finding a union flag at an England game these days.
I'd say the vast majority of Scots do not dislike the English, but what they are becoming increasingly tired of, is being governed by a political party they didn't vote for.

But that is what makes the u.k " BRITAIN GREAT " and diverse.
You’d be surprised how many Unionists hate diversity because they see it as a threat. An example would be the protection and celebration of Scots and Gaelic languages

Scotland is pro-european and England is not.
The only way to conciliate that is for Scotland to become independent and join the EU if the Scottish people wishes to...
