- I'm often asked about my feelings on how the Sega systems(and add-ons) stack up against one another. Which is my favorite, or where a certain machine ranks in the hierarchy. In this episode, I shed most of the negativity and just rank the machines based on what I enjoyed the most and a brief explanation of why.

The Pico was a device aimed at younger gamers that played games using a tablet like interface.It actually had a number of cool games, I just haven't played enough of it to give you a fully formed impression.
I realize that combining the Game Gear and SMS will ruffle some feathers, but it's more to do about their similarity in games than anything. I played many later SMS games on my GG via a converter as well. - Ігри

I try and be honest in my vids. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I think it worked here.
As a regular viewer of your channel, it took me by surprise to hear you drop something about your private life so personal. I applaud that and I found it very touching. Keep up the good work dude. ☺
I am a fairly private person, but the story is so intricately woven into my Saturn experience, I had to include it.
Let me tell you something. That story at the end had me on the verge of tears. I think about how games kept me off the streets as a kid and in my teen years while people I knew were getting in trouble with jail or dying. If it wasn't for games, I wouldn't have been lost and it always reminds me of my late brother. We always would play together all the time. That era of gaming will never be duplicated. I try to make people understand but unless you were there, it's not easy to comprehend. That's the feeling I got from your vid. People take gaming for granted now but back then, it was an event playing these games. It's all you had. Thank you so much for bringing me back, Sega Lord X. You are a good man. These retrospectives always make me nostalgic about the good ole days when I’d ask my single mom for a game and how exiting it was to finally get it. Man, I really miss those times.
I hear you...if it wasn't for games and comic books in my teens to keep me away from gangs or hooking up with girls, I think I would have gotten into trouble and my life would be much different. My dad left us when I was 14 and my mom was so detached from being a true parent. I had a weekend job that would get me spending money to buy games and comic books. I was glad to be a game/comic nerd. XD

I appreciate the unvarnished honesty in your videos and love all the personal backstory, every gamer has a different story about how they formed their preferences and got to where they are today. Great videos man and the Dreamcast video looks fantastic, hope to see more of it, I still play mine often :)
I think that sharing our backstory with these machines pulls us out of the quagmire of arguing about personal preference. Each experience is so personal, no amount of arguing will ever change anything.

That was beautiful man. Especially the ending. What you said about games going deeper than nostalgia is so true. Life's hardships and artistic media of all varieties can be a life changing combination. It sort of reminds me of how Ryo in Shenmue goes to the arcade while trying to process the grief of losing his father. Something about that seemed so real to me, and I think that's why games like it and Zelda OOT are still experiences that I hold dear.
Amazing how even the art that you hold dear imitates the events in life that drew you to it in the first place.
I'm still disappointed that so many Saturn games never left Japan, resulting in the Saturn's mixed reception outside of Japan.

1) Genesis
2) Dreamcast
3) Saturn
I probably would have gotten a lot more out of the Saturn if I was willing to deal with imports and the language barrier (which isn't a big deal in most 32bit games outside of RPGs, the stories weren't that important.)
The Saturn USA library is quite poor IMO.

Josh I: because almost all the games look way too japanese. Or are arcade ports which get boring. They wouldn't sell in USA

He refused to greenlight FF7 for the west. Had he NOT been terminated from Sony, we never would've gotten FF7 in the west!
Damn dude. The dreamcast is my favorite console for similar reasons. I got mine at a bad time in my teen years and it was a gift from my late mother. Didnt know you went through all that, but it's great to see you pull through and persevere.
Many of us have a story that ties a game or system to some event that affected us in a big way. It's why I never argue about games I dislike being someone elses favorite.
Sega marked my life.I will love this company till the day I die.

The Sega Master system was much more popular here in Belgium ( Europe ) Than Nintendo. It was my first console ever. I still love the master system. And also in dark times in my life, my Sega Dreamcast helped my to get over it. I am a Sega fan till I die !

The Sega I fell in love with, is dead and gone when the Dreamcast died
And the Sega that took its place is something inferior.
Sega is a former shadow of it's self.
Sega still produces great games from time to time, but its not the Sega I fell in love with anymore.
@@dvdbytes4348 at least they still re release the old stuff from time to time. Their library of games is probably enough to entertain me forever even if they never made a game again. No matter what they do today I'll always love them for their past.
Your personal touch at the end was incredibly moving, it never fails to amaze me thinking about how much this hobby we share has saved lives, changed people for the better, and opened the door for lasting bonds

It's interesting, for me, my first Sega game experience was on the Atari 2600 and ColecoVision with their ports of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Zaxxon, Congo Bongo, etc. My first Sega console experience was the Master System, as my mom for some reason bought it for Christmas one day instead of the NES. As such, I have a ton of nostalgia for the SMS and none whatsoever for the NES.
The next Christmas console was an SNES rather than a Genesis, so I have no nostalgia for the Genesis at all and tons for the SNES. After the SNES, any console I owned was purchased by me. The first console I purchased myself was a Sega Dreamcast, this would have been in about 2000. I still own my original Master System, but bought a second one because my controllers disappeared, and I couldn't find any loose.
In any case, now owning all of the systems except the SG-1000 and the Pico, I would rank mine as follows:
1: Tie between Sega Dreamcast and Sega Saturn
2: 32X
3: Master System
4. Genesis
5. Game Gear
6. Sega CD
The reason the 32X is so high on the list is because I love the Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Space Harrier, and Afterburner ports, and play them more than any other Genesis or Genesis add-on games

Agreed! I was a Nintendo kid but the Genesis IMO bar none was their best console. I eventually bought one to supplement the SNES. The Dreamcast was a close second as it had some great games but Sega’s image was already tarnished at the time.
The last 3 mins of this video are some of most heart warming, Inspiring stuff I have ever heard on a Top gaming console list. Thank you for sharing that, Sega Lord X.

I've made a lot of mistakes in my life, and have been locked up a few times, like 2 months being the longest, but it adds up to a lot of life being missed, and being released to no job, ruined relationships, etc. makes the pain last much longer than just being incarcerated.
I've also been turning my life around over many years, albeit slowly. I've recently started playing video games again (which is how I found your channel 😃) and it's been helping to occupy my free time positively, and it's great to be able to share my childhood memories with my kids.
Keep up the great work my friend, and thank you for all the awesome videos, I hope to see many more!

Great video, loved the personal touches. Most people do stupid things as teenagers, but many of them don't turn themselves around. It looks like you've done a great job at that.
I share that story from time to time to let people know that no mistake or hardship has to destroy your life.

Great video, as always! Keep up with the good work. Here in Brazil, gaming is really expensive, so as a teenager (in 2003) I got my first Saturn (I wanted the ps1, but my father didn't had the money to buy it). The hard part was to find games for it, none of my classmates had a Saturn. After searching my whole city for games, I found I guy who happend to be a game collector and soon after I discovered the Saturn library the gaming world open up for me. Despite the fact that I have my ps4 and stuff, I still have my Saturn and a little collection of games for it. Still remains my favorite console ever. Thats why I subscribed for your channel (saturn and sega related content). Thanks for sharing your history!

@@almostliterally593 Thanks, dude. Saturn was cheaper than ps1 by 2003 because they were old consoles. Ps1 was still kinda hot in Brazil, but didn't take too much for the ps2 really catch on for the majority of population here.
Gibson Add1 I’m a Saturn guy too. My parents got mine in 1997 though and it already was selling at a bargain price with a bundle package because the PS1 and 64 killed it in marketing. Loved the Dreamcast when that came out and it was an amazing system but it’s reputation was tarnished because a lot of people didn’t like the Saturn. That really irritated me at the time and now, ironically everyone sees that system as a hidden gem

This was such a powerful video. Gaming was one of the main things that saved me when I was at my lowest and I don't even know if I would be here without it. It helped me not to lose my mind completely and get through days that seemed impossible to get through. It's also part of many of my most treasured and happiest memories.
That 32X+Genesis is really more of a budget Saturn than most realized. 2 CPUs in the 32X, like Saturn. Also, the way most devs used the hardware, with Genesis drawing the background and the 32X handling the foreground, mimics the VDPs in the Saturn, with 1 drawing the foreground and the other the background.
Would have been interesting to see what mature software development would have looked like on it.
32x is very strong for 2d,only the cartridge limits it,it could give good ports of any Neogeo-CPS2 game or even CPS3 (like Saturn).
But Saturn just kills it on polygons and special effects.

What a terrific heart felt video. Funny this is this channel has really changed my opinion on the Saturn. I've recently been collecting for it and have been pleasantly surprised by its library. Thank you Sega Lord X for all that you do. God bless you brother.
I don't know if you have mentioned your past before, but that was something I did not know. I appreciate how forthcoming you are in sharing that. I can understand why that makes the Saturn, which is a great system, extra special to you. And your enthusiasm for it and everything else really shows through. I had a Saturn when it was current and loved it, but you've helped to raise my enthusiasm for it back to older levels. I'd probably put the Saturn as my number two, behind the Genesis. Otherwise, our lists would be similar. My issues with the Saturn, aside from hardware design and marketing issues, would be the optical hardware(load times and less reliable compared to cart systems) and that many great games on it are arcade ports that are now available for other systems as arcade emulation. But those games weren't available anywhere else back in the day.
Your story illustrates the real positive side of video games, especially the older ones. It could be such a strong, positive force in people's lives that can help them through tough times. They can take your mind off things and make you happy, at least for a short time. Sometimes, people just need that one bit of positivity in their lives, which could be anything. I remember Happy Console Gamer saying similar things about gaming getting him on a better path. And in my case, gaming has helped me through my own hard times. Thanks for sharing and good list with great insights.
It's why I encourage everyone to show tolerance when someone likes something you might not. You never know what event may be tied to another person loving something dearly.

I’ve had a strong emotional connection with Sega since childhood. I always enjoy digging up my old DC, Saturn, 32X, Game Gear, Nomad and Genesis on occasion.
Sega hardware and games take up a significant portion of my retro collection.

I give gaming a big chunk of credit in my own life for keeping me from either destroying my world or killing myself and it resulted in me being successful by most standards even in spite of most people around me not getting it, trying to make me feel like I'm missing out on life, or just straight dissing on my passion. Good on ya for fighting through the dark times, I think you convey a lot of depth in your videos I don't see on UA-cam or in life as a whole very often and I appreciate where you come from.

This has to be the best ranking video I have seen. Thank you for telling your story, I am more eager to see your content than beforer I only recently discovered your channel.
The Mega-CD was created with super scaler games in mind hence the ASIC scaling/rotation chip. It's in US and Europe that they focused more on FMV games (many of which are *good* games btw).
Also the Mega-CD wasn't that expensive, it was released at the same time AND retailed for about the same price as the PC Engine Super CD-Rom² despite having many more hardware features in comparison: its own CPU, ASIC scaling/rotation chip, 8 channels Ricoh PCM chip... So given its capabilities, the Mega-CD was actually rather affordable, especially since they quickly lowered the price and further did when they released the Mega-CD model 2.
And all things considered, the Mega Drive sold quite well in Japan. It was released after two successive Sega 8-bit consoles (the SG-1000 in 1983 and the Mark III in 1985) AND it faced various troubles such as memory shortage during its early days or the fact that the widely awaited Super Mario Bros. 3 was released around the same time. So with about 3.5 million units sold up until 1994 (and prolly more thereafter) and wide support from many Japanese third party developers, the Mega Drive did quite well in Japan even though not nearly as much as the SNES (but it outsold the latter in other regions).
I like the Sega CD, Saturn and Dreamcast because they are backwards-compatible with music CDs. I like the Genesis because it is compatible with the Sega CD and 32X add-ons and the Sega CD memory cartridge. I like the 32X because it is backwards-compatible with Genesis and 32X games. I like the model 1 Genesis because it is backwards-compatible with the Power Base Converter which allows you to play Master System games on your model 1 Genesis. I like the Sega CDX and other standalone Sega CD/Genesis 2-in-1's because they are backwards-compatible with music CDs, Sega CD and Genesis games and the Sega CD memory cartridge. I like the Nomad because it is a handheld Genesis. And I like the Game Gear because it is a handheld Master System and there is a Master System converter that you can get for the Game Gear and it will allow you to play Master System games on your Game Gear via the Master System converter.

This was a nice video. It's hard for me to rank my favourite Sega Systems as I started with the Master System and then went through them all as they were released, generation by generation. Each system playing a integral part in my childhood right up to adulthood. I do share the same amount of love for the Saturn though. I fought hard for it back in the day when everyone was on the Playstation. I stuck by it though and had some of the best moments in gaming on it. I appreciate the gamer's like me who owned it at launch, stuck by it and enjoyed it when it was relevant.

The story you tell at the end hit very close to home. Years ago I was dealing with addiction and trying to remain sober and the thing that helped me the most was my ps vita and all the RPGs that i loaded it up with. Specifically the persona series, starting with persona 4, then playing other games in the series with the psp and ps1 compatibility. It was the only thing that I could do to keep my mind off of bad thoughts and keep me going. Who knows where I would be without video games, possibly in jail or dead, and for that I am forever grateful. And I'm glad you turned your life around and didn't let your setback define you and ruin your life.

For me the console that I most cherish is the dreamcast. I was also your age when you got the saturn, 18 and it was probably the best and most happy I ever was in life. No major worries or cares, no major bills, I had just graduated high school and I was working at Funcoland which was a great company until the sold and turned into Gamestop. Those years 99 to 01 were absolute magic.
Not only do I always feel your videos are worth every second, are made so well, and have really valuable insights, but that personal glimps into your life you shared, was precious. I didn't see that coming but so glad you did. You're a monument to this gaming community and hope you keep it coming lord x. Keep it coming.

My goodness. ..the speech at the end touched me buddy...because I can relate to that...with the Sega Saturn. ..alot like you...my personal life and memories and like you for them reasons also the Saturn is my favorite console to this day too with the Genesis and it's add-ons being my second also. I can play a good Saturn, or Genesis game and to this day seems to relax me. I've really enjoyed this episode, and you put forth some of the greatest gaming footage, stories, and facts on UA-cam in my opinion. Good luck buddy, and I wish you much in the future.

You have a way of making me see gaming from different perspectives, which is why I am a fan, but this one was special. Thanks for sharing your story, it's really got thinking about what games have meant to me and Sega in particular. I've held on to only 2 systems my whole life, my Dreamcast and Saturn and I'm starting to think I'll be buried with them, lol and I couldn't understand why till I watched this video.

Thank you for the honesty and always being so genuine in your videos. I think it's incredibly understated just how much a good hobby can help heal and mature a person, something I too know personally. It takes a lot of guts to mention this sort of thing on a place where people can just easily barrage you with toxicity but thankfully respect is usually reciprocated. It's disgusting how anyone going through legal troubles is so quickly outcast, and that mental health is just barely being recognized the way it always should have been. Thank you, channels like yours not only made me play through tons of older experiences but also give me and countless others a sense of kinship when it seems as though you have no one else.
Gaming has also had a profound effect on my life. I think all the love gaming gets on UA-cam is a reflection of that. Thanks for sharing your story.

I never got around with the Saturn as a kid growing up, but after getting one like a year and a half ago, I've been collecting for it A LOT...and I immediately fell in love with the Saturn.
Genesis and Dreamcast, I've always loved.
It's never too late to discover a video game or system. Great games are eternal.
Dreamcast is number one for me. Introduced so many things for me. Buying a console on launch day with my own money, and subsequently buying games whenever I want. Learning about piracy and where to get games. Importing games (Fire Pro Wrestling D) for the first time. Connecting a console to the internet for the first time, both through dial-up and broadband...with the latter I spent almost an hour on the phone with Sega support and finally got it working. Been playing consoles since the 5200 and that's probably my second favorite of all time (first being the 360).
