hey i have a Pyramid PB580 Crystal Series in my truck my friend gave it to mee can you plz make a video on one please
LMFAO at the Audiobahn amp blowing up!
Mann i been running my 2300HCT for damn near 5 years already. i just made a video of it for my channel last week! They can bang for years if you run them right.
It should be WHOSE in the thumbnail.
@@kennymccormick8295 it was meant to be tongue and cheek 😬
BigD I probably over looked it but I didn't see the link to who you recommend for simple amp repairs thx 🙏 in advance I tossed a Wolfram amp a year ago still sick about not getting it repaired...
Everyone in the audio industry knows that once you let the magical smoke out, you lose all your power!
Not when i'm cooking chicken on the grilling Amp heatsink fins. Nice grill lines and the smoke smells the same on the Weber minus charcoal.
Timpano amp blowing up video is around the time I started watching this channel. Have zero regrets and have enjoyed every episode, I'm here to enjoy the ride and to keep on rolling with it, thank you for the hard work and unbelievable amount of content you've provided your viewers.
Smoking is hazardous to your wallet💰💲
If he was to put his nose near the amplifier when it fried... And you inhale any of that mosfet leg and insides... It's like ark flash and you can f****** die with a good breath. Especially if the cover was off.
Especially amps
In both ways
@@dnorby6990 exactly
After all these years I still enjoy your vids man! Your really good at it man!
Anyone who has been into car audio for a decent amount of time has experienced the awful feeling of a amp dying. Sometimes its dramatic like the ones shown here. Sometimes it happens without a sound.
@Dereck it might be cool to have Sam on to explain exactly what happens when a amp blows up. 👍
or worse, your amp suddenly is drawing over 300amps to produce about 1k watts lol
oh man sometimes the sound also leaves nice burn marks to trace the problem . no sound no burn marks . harder to find the issue . thank goodness for thermal cameras to help pinpoint issues .
yes, I would like to see the Orion amps tested
Seeing some of these brand was quite nostalgic, especially McIntosh and Audiobahn. The guy in high school with the best sounding system had 2 of those same McIntosh amps running 2 JL Audio 15s and that system hammered but still sounded super clean. My best friend was an Audiobahn fanatic. He had the subs with flames on them and if I remember correctly the amp had flames on it too. His system hit really hard, but didn't sound very clean. All I had was a single JL 12W3v2 and a JL e120 amp in a single cab S-10. The box didn't have nearly enough air space, but it still sounded very good. It was nice and clean when I wasn't riding around with my treble way too high sounding like a damn tamporine.
I'm a newer subscriber to this channel, but started around the time the Timpano blew up. This is a great compilation video! I'm still digging through your archives of testing. LOVE this stuff!
Thanks brother! I have over 700 videos with the majority being amp test videos. I will soon organize them on a website so it's easier to find them. I appreciate the support!
Hahaaa! Fun video to watch...been there, done that. What some don't know, the impedance of a woofer (load) is all over the place. Hence, "nominal" impedance for wiring. Woofers can create a 0.0 ohm (dead short) to the output transistors (or chip board) for brief transients (like in the microseconds). Most amps can handle that without getting too pissed off. However, using that Dyno is like flooring a Chevy 454 big block in a grocery store parking lot and not letting up for grandma to pass in front of you. RIP grandma.
Ha love the comparison 😝
Hi Big D, I used to work as a repair tech at a car audio shop in Mesquite/HWY 80 near Dallas in the 90s. The guys who want to go to the competition come to the shop for advice and I have designed a few systems for them. I have worked on most of the amps from that era, all of them are class AB. Never seen class D except for an early low-power (30W/ch) Sony. At that time there was a shortage of MOSFETS used in the power supply section. When a power supply goes out, lots of DC current goes through the switching transformer, shorts out some of the windings, and must be replaced. Otherwise, long-term reliability will not be there.
Orion HCCA amps are very difficult and will soon burn out again. The best is the Punch 50 from Rockford Fosgate who pioneered the high-power amps in the 80s. They used BJTs in their power supply, and it was also very difficult to source them due to high gain and high current characteristics.
One guy had a carpet van (extended long van) with 20 Peavy 1000w amps and 40 JBL speakers installed in it. The mains power supply is bypassed with 12 car batteries in series to make up +/- 72V. For charging the batteries, relays are used to switch them to go parallel and used a high-current charger. Whenever he tunes his system the whole neighborhood shakes and often the police are called. He is partially deaf though.
That timpano had flames for sure!!😂😂 Quality matters!!💯
Awesome video D. Thanks for all the hard work brother
Fire!! Fire!! He he he (in my Beavis voice)😂 That was a whole lotta Big Dummy carnage!! Great video BigD!! 💪🔥
I love the videos man! I would love to see some GLADEN amplifiers tested. They're apparently quite meaty.
im so glad you have made a video like this . i have to record amps that i fix to prove they work before sending them back out to customers because we all know what some will do . they bridge 2 channel amps below spec . but its always interesting to see just how much they will put out before you blow the power supply or a driver mosfet. by the way have you ever had a lanzar optidrive 500 on your bench ? i think its circa 1995 if i recall . it use to be my favorite amp back in the day . have a good one cheers !
Hi, I am from india. I truly believed that blaupunkt is a high end brand. (Not my fault my dad said that blaupunkt makes some very good car audio products ) .I’ve been watching your vids from 2 years now , I’ve upgraded my car audio set up based on your dyno tests. I am currently running all Rf setup ..thanks
Lots of the big car audio brands (especially USA made) were bought out in the late 1990s by larger companies. As always with Large companies, profit became the primary concern for these companies. They transferred manufacturing to China and Korea, and stuck their name on them. Same for Blaupunkt. At least the quality of the stuff coming out of China has greatly improved from the 90s and early 2000s. While China can copy things easily, they can't always replicate the quality.
Wah Bhai
@@nearchd504 🙏
Blaupunkt was once an excellent brand and oem supplier Audi/ Skoda/ VW. They made excellent head units in the 90s and were early innovators of class D amplifiers. I have a couple multi channel, American made Blue dots from the 90s, they are excellent amplifiers
@@hazepheno925 yeah , there are some Chinese brands that are true to their rms ratings. But problem is with their efficiency and durability… chinese products are not at all reliable..
I know Ill probably get flamed, but back in the day, Audiobahn mid to high end subs were actually quite impressive. I personally killed 3 of their amps and it was never an "oops" moment that did it if you know what Im saying. I actually still have a pair of audiobahn alumn12's running at 500w rms each and they run like new......on a rockford amp 😆
I hear ya man. I've got an Audiobahn flame Q sub in my truck still (AW1006T ) or I should say again. I had an Alpine R 12 in for a while but the cu ft for the box made it not doable in a standard cab truck so the flame basket came back out. It's not the best but better than nothing and considering it's age and the little bit of money I have in it it's a helluva deal.
Oohhh man this is great! I was cringing hard at #7 Audiobahn, I recognised that squealing sound instantly, that weren't the fans mah brother 😅😅 pop incoming!
Lol that Orion, snap crackle n pop... Love your vids man been a long time subscriber!
Another great video Big D thanks for sharing.
A bit of sunshine in my awful life. Thank you Big D. I hope I will be around to watch you do even more fun stuff. Life's not looking very good at all. 😢
Prayers for you brother. Things will get better
@@wal Thank you first and foremost. I will let you know because I was hoping one of these days to get your input on how to step up my system to the next level and I want 32 - 12" subs in my main room and I'll need ideas on powering lol I just hope it's not too late to find someone to listen before it's my corpse that has to do the talking. Plus, my fur-babies are dealing with this bullcrap. I didn't ask for this and they sure as hell didn't. Broken doesn't quite describe how I feel. Thank you for being you brother!! 💔🍻🌎❤️🌮🙋🏻♂️🎶🏆🥇
@@dancingwiththedogsdj You never know what is around the next corner. Usually something for the better. Trust me on that one.
@@rjonzun5828 the problem is, will it be good or bad? 🤔 Probably not good based on recent experiences.
@@dancingwiththedogsdj if anyone can help im sure big d can . but most of all ohms law is your friend for sure
Thanks for the vid . I used to install car audio in the 70’s & 80’s . Also worked on custom cars . That happens to engines during dyno testing . Sometimes parts fly.
Great analogy!
Heck yes do a video of the Orion amps
You and some other people wanna see it’s just tough to put so much effort into a vid not many will watch. I will still do it one day
Some of the reasons the older amps could be blowing might be due to the terminal paste being old and not able to handle the heat.
That did not play a role in the Mc.
Wow, you should always have that action camera set up.. just in case :D Blowout videos are another cathegory of interesting videos. And yes, we would like to see your collection!
And that Timpano explosion looked like my Sundown SFB3000D explosion out of nowhere. Lol. (I guess one of the reasons those certain wattages of the SFB's are completely gone and replaced with the SIA's instead lol).
All my stuff was good, only the SIA3K at 1ohm powering a single Sundown U15, 1/0 ofc wiring, 1/0 ofc 3 grounds in front, XS Power D3400 battery, good high amp alt, everything good and proper, music was going and I was in my trunk grabbing cleaning supplies and suddenly the amp started popping, sparking, and caught fire and wouldn't stop.... thankfully I both ran up, cut my car off, flipped my breaker under the hood, and hit the amp with my dry fire extinguisher I have mounted in the trunk behind my cleaning supplies. 😵💫
Unhooked everything, sent that B back, told them what happened, told them there wasn't any physical damage as I was both lucky as I was literally back there when it happened and killed it before it caught anything else on fire, and they sent me an SIA3500D 🙄
To be fair, haven't had an issue with that thing, but still, I didn't even have it wired below 1ohm, all good clean wiring, good fuses, good connections, good everything, damn thing just popped....they should've sent me a Salt 4k 😅
Love to see more Orion Amps vs dyno
I blew up more Orion amps than you did , back in 1999-2001 , I killed at least a half dozen XTR-2250 running them at 2 ohms mono at full clip during competition, 17.5 volts in about 2000 watts out , or VA clapped output was 82voltsx25amps
The editing and comedy parts are awesome ❤
I’ve had amps go before, but for whatever reason, that Tarantula made me a little nervous! 😂
Man it was vicious! Skeered us real bad!
600amp current draw at 1800watts is crazy!! That is 25% efficiency. 600amp is a lot of current to control.
Oh man that brings back memories...that burnt smell. I know exactly what that stench smells like. Did something really stupid and blew a 225 Hcca when I mistakenly let the channel wires touch together while it was powered up. Yep let the smoke out. Why did I let them touch because I was stupid at the time. That's why I started using toggle switches. And Have had a few subs blow out also...you can't say you're a basshead if you haven't had an amp blow the magic smoke out
This was a fun video, nice work.
I never ran my Xtra 2500 lower than 2ohm, but it rocked it!
that Soundstream should have been able do rated. Makes me wonder if it was abused by the previous owner, although, Soundstream was circling the drain in the late 90s, and quality was suffering...did you have that one repaired? Do you still have it?...great show Big D, as always
It's still here awaiting repair. It's a pain to get inside that amp, I know it will be a small fortune to repair. I have a big Audiobahn as well that needs repair. It's the size of a microwave 😲
audiobahn and wolfenhag were the two brands I remember our local pawn shop pushing. I smelled junk without ever owning one lol. But I had lot of friends who blew them up
Years later that Orion video really stuck with me. SSSSSSSMMOKYYYYY!!! Then you did a dyno on a hot rodded one too. If there's an amp that deserves to blow up, must be that fake Alpine V12, though if you'll toss it to me I'll put a built motor in there!
Damn, that soundstream tarantula (1st gen was my fav) really pulled some current. I saw the meter read at time it blew and it read 588 amps of current, unbelievable. Never seen that kinda current for a 2k watt amplifier. That's like four of 2k amplifiers combined of how much current they pull on a avg.
Had my Orion hcca3000.1 dsplx fry on first hookup, digital driver board blew and also some MOSFETs. Talk about heart breaking. Then took 6 montbs to get back under warranty repair due to chip shortage
Got a 2022 version last year. It didn't have a birth certificate. But it had the warranty stickers on the seal so?? I thought I had enough amperage to pull it, without at least two good batteries. (I got 190 ah agm) and some better wiring (I got 1/0 big 3, and extra 1/0 alternator ground). It's pushing 4000 Watts + ALL DAY!!!!!
It wants more, my car doesn't 😂.
Do the electrical bro. That's a HUGE PART
On one electronics forum they claimed that power MOSFETs if over driven are also known as Fire Emitting Transistors
Hey big D, if you could get your hands on a jbl 1200 gti or another size in the series and test them out that would be cool. Had a 1200 gti since the 90’s and it still impresses me. Thanks!
After my first amp blew when the subwoofer terminal spring retaining pins slid over and touched each other, I never trusted those things again and permanently hardwired everything from that point forward. I even hardwired the speaker wires to the board in the amp. Not taking any chances with that much bass.
It would be cool if you showed us all your amps you have 😊. A good video i thinking
I don't have as many as you might think and most aren't in really good condition. Over the years I've bought stuff to show in videos and test and much of it I've saved to eventually sell, hopefully when the items appreciate.
Still remember the First Amp I ever blew up, Pyramid PB1475, many moons ago, took months to get the smell out of the car. I did leave the amp in the ditch I threw it in.
Never thought I would see orion hcca and xtr on this list.
...I buy many used amps from the 90s. Eclipse seem to be the best value and the most reliable That has been my experience. I dont recall seeing an Eclipse tested....I have had many Soundstreams repaired, but, they sound the best and are worth it...shout out to "Erics Amplifiers"...fair prices and good service
Big D, have you ever seen the ice power 1000 asp, available on parts express? 1000 watt power amplifier runs off of 115 or 230 ac. 400 bucks, they are pricey but if they make their rated power, they are probably worth it. I have been looking at them for a while, curious about how much power they actually make. Been wanting to do a setup in my basement for a while and think this would be a good option for multiple uses. Would power a few ib subs pretty well or a lot of mids and highs. Apparently you can buy a second module and run off of the same power supply. They used to have just the 1000 watt module, but is no longer available, at least not from parts express. They do still have the 500 watt module for just over 100 bucks though and a couple other smaller modules. Would be an interesting amp to see on the Dyno.
Awesome !love it D
Great advice, D! I don't recommend ever reading things online. Ever. :)
What would we have to do to get a taramps dyno done? Md 12k 1/2 ohm version.. id really like to see what could actually get out of it dyno wise
You know that McIntosh hurt 🤕😬
There's guys STILL running those for power today with their McIntosh's, Nakamichi's, or Denon receivers and a bunch of Hertz, ID, Focal, or custom goodies in the SQ space 😅
Lots of fun. I've never seen this happen so this was fun.
Cool fireworks show at the end
This is why I love your channel. You are completely honest no matter the manufacturer. The sundown army is definitely coming for this video 😂
I called and talked to Bryan after the amp blew up and he assured me the box was incorrect and the amp was not 1 ohm stereo or 2 ohms bridged stable. I was bummed but they replaced it so I could do my tests on the amp, so that was appreciated. I mentioned in the full Amp Dyno to not fall for the 1 ohm ratings on the box (4ch) as this was a mistake.
@@wal oh I remember the video. Trust me I’m pretty sure I’ve watched every single video you’ve ever made
I want to know if you ever ran or sen carver amps? I had a couple back late 90’s, and hate and sad I sold them.
Those are the amps I used in my competition car in 97-98 IASCA comp at WI state fair park, in my GLH with 4-12” impp and full surround. The amps ran really good- definitely underrated and meant for competition.
The sound of miniature lightning bolts as the MOFETS go to Valhalla. ;D
LOVE The Ernest clip...!
i cant believe you haven't yet tested cerwin vega's mini amp series. i have the CVPM10001D powering a kicker trtp12 and the 4 channel powering the factory speakers on my mini cooper s and it all fits like it was meant to be there. both amps are in a small tray underneath the passenger seat. they are smaller than my phone and rattle my car enough to get my nose itchy.
Even burnt I would love to have that orion hcca 😢
I think the sundown amp may have had a defect from the factory if it failed at what it’s rated to do. My sfb-3000D ran great until I accidentally shorted it like a dummy 😢
I'm guessing the dyno has fused protection or something right? That's all I kept thinking about the whole time was the dyno.
Hey Big D. Great tracker of Old School deliciousness. I'm trying to track down a pair of Precision Power PC18s. Can you help?
Salute your hard work sir 💯👈💥💥💥💥💥🍾
Hey how about testing old school hot rodded amps if you don't know about this it's where someone hard wires external capacitors to the power rails. It has been a long time since I have seen one
OK Big D, stop blowing these up! I am busy enough LOL Love the video as that is a sound I do NOT like to hear around here.
I feel like you should have another camera aimed at you. Just to catch that😮 face.😂
🤣
Was thinking the same thing lol
Does running an amp at it's max rca input voltage alter the output on the Dyno? Can you get significantly better results at say 6 volts vs 2 volts?
When I was a teenager about 2002/3 ish I had a 300 watt plant audio on 2 jl w0 2 ohm bridged kept popping the 30 amp fues so we stuck a 40 in it the amp took it just fine but did catch the fuse on fire good bass mechanics doing damage
Great. Now I have to go watch "Just look at it!" videos. It's been years.
Nice!
I love it, he cleans out his junk drawer, makes $ on a video AND we get intertained! I love it!
Anyone who hasn't seen Redd Foxx, (you big dummy) do his stand up routine it's very good but definitely adults only. Your videos have taught me a lot about car audio.
That mac popping hurt my soul! Glad it was repairable
Hey BigD. I'm in the triangle area. Recently had an Alpine Mono amp go out on me. Can you recommend a Amp repair shop that's good.
It's all fun and games until the lightning bolts revolt ! The Big D Smoke Show !
Need to try the plant audio 3000 watt amp and see what happens
Will you review the Lanzar 6000 watt amp? It is supposed to be able to run 900watts @ 2 Ohms but everyone seems to report that it is NOT stable at 2 Ohms. I can run it @2 for about 15 minutes before it overheats and shuts down. I would be interested to see what it actually puts out.
Great video! Do it for the science!
Big D. I had a Memphis audio Amp blow up, catch fire, smoke out the entire suburban. When it went over 14.4 volts. As soon as it hit 14.8 boom. It was done. Is that normal?
THE MYSTIC SMOKY😂😂
Cool video..
Good vid big D
After your opening the first thing I thought of was the Timpano what junk lol
Exactly why i do not run the "inverter" style amps. They go boom a lot lol.
👌😝👍
I was wondering what happened to that McIntosh! The hardest parts with the old amps is getting compatible parts that behave similarly to the OEM. Brand new parts don’t always equate to better performance and this one was no different. Fortunately only half of the SMPS primary switching MosFETs were dead. None of the outputs suffered failure.
Yeah man, I had an old pioneer GMX-944, awesome amp, they are not common anymore, and last year I blew it up and I can't find the parts to fix it.
@@redchris97 I didn’t use original part numbers to repair the McIntosh but very similarly spec parts. I’m sure you could find similar parts as Pioneer rarely used very specialized components.
I lost out on that same Audiobahn rack mount amp in a bidding war. I should have gone just a smidge more. I was the big dummy.
Lmao did you splice in a shart sound effect on that very last explosion clip?
The itsy bitsy spider.......boom! Poor little spider. You should post all the fail videos. Also you should do another Orion Series.
how did i wire it up? red to black, black to blue, blew to bits....
Too much hot sauce on that burrito! (Audiobahn)
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Please show us the Orions you have!!!!!
Very entertaining and funny.
To be clear all I seen was $$ blowin up and the reactions were funny.
My favorite amp Orion 225 HCCA
I love the 3rd gen Orion HCCA amps. I have two 225’s and two 250’s. Great amps!
Will you ever try NVX XAD42 3200W RMS X-Series Full-Bridge Class D 1-Ohm Stable 4-Channel Amplifier?
I seem to remember a amplifier from the late 1980's named McBaik or something along those lines. I think it was pronounced MAC BAKE. Do you recall any amplifer by that name? Love your channel.
i'm wondering what happend to the 12v podcast, last episode on my podcast app is episode 128, is the rest on youtube only?
Who do you get to repair your amps?
Its funny and sad how quickly Soundstream went from really good to just a shadow of itself at the turn of the century.
Mostly sad, they made amazing amps in the 90's
man i remember that.... fun stuff
What do you do with the blown up amps? Can I buy them from you?
