You gonna get your hands on the new Mc-707 or 101, want to hear your opinion on them. Seems like crazy bang for your buck compared to a force or mpc live
The speed at which you demonstrate crafting a sound, and the fact I could keep up while you were doing it, is testimony to great synth design. It’s all good to have depth in a synth engine, but here you have access to it all and have done the task by the time you finish saying what you want to do. Everything seems so accessible.
Finally. A digital synth that doesn't want to be a cheaper analog synth sound alike. This is taking advantage of what digital can offer while still sounding great. Add in the warmth factor setting and it's a slam dunk. Is it analog? Nope but analog can't do what this can.
I've had this for about a year and still discovering possibilities. That UI is the best out there in my opinion. And surprisingly warm sounds come out of this!
Rotary = Rotary Speaker, for example a Leslie speaker. A Leslie speaker (cabinet) is an amplified speaker cab where the speaker cone is motorized and spins around in 360deg. The result is both an amplitude modulation (as the speaker moves from pointed at you, to away from you) as well as a subtle pitch shift due to the Doppler effect. They were most commonly used attached to a Hammond organ. The "lo/hi" (I assume, not used this synth) probably refers to the fact that on a Hammond there's a switch that allows you to adjust the speed of the Leslie speaker's rotation. Players would often use this as an effect -- you can hear it a lot on jazz organ type stuff -- resulting in an acceleration or deceleration of the speaker. For example, you could have it set to High and the speaker is spinning fast (so the rate of the amplitude change is quite fast, and the Doppler effect is more pronounced) and then, whilst playing, switch it to Low and the speaker would slowly decelerate, the amplitude change would be at a slower rate and the Doppler effect would be less pronounced. It's quite a common thing once you know what you're listening for. No idea if the the lo/hi parameter on this machine actually refers to that, but it would make sense! Anyway, thanks for the vid. Really impressed with the sounds from this lil box.
lo/hi could also refer to the fact that there were two different speakers rotating in a Leslie cabinet. one for the high frequencies, and one for the low frequencies. One could spin clockwise, while the other spun counterclockwise, and as you mention, at different rates of speed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_speaker#/media/File:Lesliebox_Animation.gif
Correction: as far as I know, the speaker itself stays in place and fire the sound up to the cone, that collects the sound into the short tube, and this tube is the axis on wich two horns rotate and radiate the sound to the sides.
No cones move, except in the regular way. The sound from the cones is channeled into the "treble horn" on top, and the "bass rotor" on the bottom, which are essentially 3 speed or two speed, and one of those speeds may be "stop". Even at stop there is variation, as the horn may be pointed away. The real magic is the speed change itself, which is why you see Hammond players hit the switch so often. The electronic vibratos, which the Hammond has 6, do not allow a smooth change of speed. Essentially the Leslie was an "acoustic LFO", or mechanical LFO, and obviously the last effect in any chain.
It’s really exciting to see digital synth designers pushing boundaries and not trying to re hash and emulate analog synths. I picked up the microfreak earlier this year and it’s so sick. Great vid as usual
Don't remember the last time I've literally said "Oh my God!" so many times during a synth vid, just for the way it sounds. Your patches and that low-fi effect is just unbelievable!
You're correct that the Rotary affects pitch too, it is like a doppler effect. The speaker spins around and as it does the pitch, volume and EQ are modulated. Imagine a speaker facing you, then turn it away, so the volume and EQ/tone will change as the speaker goes off axis, and even you get a bit of phase cancellation to boot! The pitch modulation kicks in more as you speed up the rotation, much like a plane flying by overhead as it approaches the pitch goes up, and as it passes and goes away from you the pitch goes down. This is the same thing with a rotary speaker. Because of the effect there are usually tone knobs for bass and high on really leslies, those are EQ to emphasise or compensate for what is happening psychoacoutically.
Rotary is when they place a speaker in a cabinet and spin it around with a mic inside. It creates a whirring sound or flutter. Commonly used in organs to give it the “wah wahs”. It creates a small Doppler when the mic spins away.
@@chromosundrift he is for sure! But even at this price point though I feel like you could consider this a "middle-ground" synth. The prices on the top-of-the-line stuff is much more than this, it's crazy.. That being said, I don't think anyone would NEED anything more than this beast though.
The more I see of this synth the more I love it! I don't know that I will trade in my Deepmind 12 and try to upgrade to that but I'd seriously consider it if money wasn't so tight. However, the MPC has really got me leaning more into hardware and that's why I'm on the market for a synth. I want something to pair up with my MPC X that gives me a ton of options for producing melodies, counter melodies, awesome basslines etc. I think the Hydrasynth would probably be better for what I'm looking for, but I'm not 100% sure because I've seen plenty of Sub 37 videos that had me drooling!
I was gonna say that I wish more "lofi" effects had things other than the standard bit-depth and sample rate settings, and then I took a peek at the manual and saw the filter types
No need for external effects...but ppl will use them anyway.. A sm aaazing synth..I would be lost in sound creation...difficult to focus on a structured task until you fully know this beast.
So thats it for me! I guess my new favorite song is a patch on the hydrasynth. I love the whole video, but that first patch is just gorgeous! I’d love to see a walkthrough on that.
I think this is the video that's finally convinced me to actually get a Hydrasynth. But I seriously need that Poly AT and Ribbon Controller for sure. Thanks Ricky.

"Rotary" is going to be a Leslie speaker emulation; Typically two horns that spin at different speeds, one for low frequencies the other for high. This creates a filter and something like a pseudo-Doppler effect.

I just happened to see this come up on my feed as I was noodling around creating patches on my Knifonium. I stopped and clicked on your presentation. You have a great way of presenting and you make it feel like we are discovering things with you. I totally forgot what I was doing. It’s problematic to know that it is more interesting to watch you virtually explore the possibilities in a synth, than to do it myself.
A way to control both filters simultaneously but independently is by using the filter section for one, and the master control section for the other filter. Or using two macro’s , each for one filter. Hey, you can add a 3d macro that controls both of them but in opposite directions. And a4th one that controls the resonance in opposite directions.. :-)
Welp, you sold me at 11 minutes in. Called sweetwater and made the purchase 😂 you made this look easy. I hope it is as easy as you made it look. This is my first hardware synth
On a history tip, I'm vaguely remembering there was a rotating effect speaker that had actual speakers physically rotating, by means of a magnetic induction device, working like a transformer. Am I remembering right? A BBC studio in London had such a cabinet, maybe custom built? Today, Korg have really nailed this effect, digitally of course.
I wanna see the Hydrasynth's polyphonic aftertouch keyboard MIDI's into the Peak's PAT and see how it responds. I think it's an absolute killer reason to have the Hydrasynth keyboard is it's ability to expressivly control all those synths out there that accept PAT.
Nice one! I'm kinda mad jealous at all the reviewers getting one early while i'm over here in Germany can't even preorder anywhere, nor get any confirmation from retail if it really will be available on November 1st, and how much it will be in my currency. I am really hyped up for this. DO WANT! 😆✌ Enjoy!
with the envelope delays it seems like you could really do some really rhythmic filter sounds with a quick decay and resonance and some fast sequences, timed to the BPM/milliseconds
12:30 When I hear the word Rotary in the context of a sound effect, I think of an amplifier cabinet from last century. I believe it was referred to as a Leslie. This cabinet had rotating speakers in it that would throw the sound out of the cabinet in different directions. is this a digital simulation of that physical amplifier cabinet?
$800 is a lot considering I'm too young to get a job but this could very well be the last poly I ever need. Besides the Prologue. I love the Prologue and I really wish I could get one.
Sets out to demo 5 top features, adds in another 25 out of enthusiasm. Loved the entire video. I am liking the user interface of the synth but none of the sounds you played actually made me want to buy it. I'd almost want to use it as a hardware controller for my soft synths if that makes sense.
Is anyone else baffled as to why it was modelled (aesthetically) on the Ensoniq DP/4? So '90s looking, and the ASM logo is abysmal!! Amazing synth though, can't wait to get my mitts on one
The layout/interface is basically identical to my old Ensoniq SQ80 from the mid '80s, which was probably the last great synth to also feature polyphonic aftertouch. I assume ASM are Ensoniq fans. The SQ80 waveforms were a bit more musical and useable though.
Awesome! Love how you can see the time of the envelopes. That way you can calculate the timing for perfect on the beat attacks and stuff. How many seconds can you go up in the envelopes? Thnx for this vid. It is awesome and definitely put this on the GAS list. Next to the Zoia!
Got my Hydrasynth on the way and considering pairing it with a Euroburo for enhanced CV modulation/sequencing and better effects.. I think my OT MK2 is the only thing that can handle such a hot signal though, so I need to find a cheap solution to ensure it’s safe to go into my PC interface. (I’m new to modular gear)
I share your opinion. Just to expand on it, I would say that most demonstrations concentrate on how unfriendly and distorted the sound can be made instead of how cool and warm can it generate. Almost every vid I come across never shows the power of harmonics and colors of sounds that are choreographed into some comprehensive melody. How many of these sounds are you gonna use in your track, actually, unless you are J. Michell Jarre? Pads instead of keyboard (I know it has a keyboard version)... The more I see new demostrations of new synths, the less of an actual playing I see. Show me you can actually be a musician - not a laboratory rat technician. Compose some music with it that makes some sense. I am really growing weary of these demonstrations

Welp, you sold me at 11 minutes in. Called sweetwater and made the purchase 😂 you made this look easy. I hope it is as easy as you made it look. This is my first hardware synth
This needs a compact creations session
damn ricky vids are so good
Great demo Ricky but also some fantastic crunchy soundscapes. Thanks!
Digging the new hat Mr Tinez. Also, cool synth!
Very interesting stuff - that lofi setting was very interesting indeed. 👍
Jeez this is the coolest thing I've seen and heard in a while. I think this has to happen.
Someone needs to tell Nick Batt about all that PWM
he is well aware lol.
He previewed and reviewed it already. Pretty sure he knows lol.
@@HotStrange had the good pleasure of personally walking him through it :)
Ken Flux Pierce Fluxwithit Ah man. 2 of my favorites colliding. That’s awesome!
@@Fluxwithit Well, maybe they should tell him again just to make sure
I wanna see the Hydrasynth's polyphonic aftertouch keyboard MIDI's into the Peak's PAT and see how it responds. I think it's an absolute killer reason to have the Hydrasynth keyboard is it's ability to expressivly control all those synths out there that accept PAT.
I am spending too much time on UA-cam because of you! (Thanks for all the music and knowledge
Nice one! I'm kinda mad jealous at all the reviewers getting one early while i'm over here in Germany can't even preorder anywhere, nor get any confirmation from retail if it really will be available on November 1st, and how much it will be in my currency. I am really hyped up for this. DO WANT! 😆✌ Enjoy!
Finally dove in and placed my order on sweetwater, looking forward to rewatching your videos with hands on practice at the same time :)
steps are as follows:
1. skip ahead in video to 22:00.
2. lower jaw as video plays until 23:00.
3. purchase.
: )
Wonderful vid. Wonderful synth. So buzzed. Thanks.
This thing is extremely cool.
I love this synth sooooo much
with the envelope delays it seems like you could really do some really rhythmic filter sounds with a quick decay and resonance and some fast sequences, timed to the BPM/milliseconds
This thing is like a Z3ta+2 on crack coming to life, god damn i want one
All the the sounds you demonstrate sounded so tinny and metallic I was so superseded how bad it sounds!
Delayed envelopes and modulation are keyyyyyyyyyyyyy ... people sleep on that function so much for some reason....
And, “...cooking with fire*” 😎
Man I want one. I love the module version.
$800 is a lot considering I'm too young to get a job but this could very well be the last poly I ever need. Besides the Prologue. I love the Prologue and I really wish I could get one.
nice selection of tricks and tips - I'm finally getting the keys version - need that MPE/PolyAT key action and the ribbon :-)
1:05 "kind of like your mind without a cell phone"🤣
Super cool, one of the many I’ll have my ears on. Interesting to see how it’s wave scanning compares to (Kronos) wave sequencing.
As soon as I saw the hat I knew this shit was gonna be good
For a second there I thought I had clicked the wrong video cause I thought you were gonna say ASMR in the intro haha
Hahah that’s one letter short of a completely different ballgame.
best part of the hydra synth is the poly aftertouch keyboard and the long ribbon.
Great demo....looking forward to getting my shipped from Sweetwater
A sound designers dream.....
Hopefully you get a demo Osmose soon...
Just got this as my first synth. You sold me on. This thing and I LOVE IT!!!
HAT! Ricky, 10 months in. You still rockin the Hydrasynth?
Can't wait to get mine
Gotta get this some day. Great features you brought up but I'll get the keys version...
Really cool patch... and a really cool synth... :-)
oh lordylord that first patch when u initiate aftertouch... GAS!!!
I am very excited about this synth, but I still haven't heard any sounds that I like. But it looks like it would be very capable to make any sound
I am really growing weary of these demonstrations
mitsa nut here here! Nick Batt's review has been the most musical so far.
