You're correct that the Rotary affects pitch too, it is like a doppler effect. The speaker spins around and as it does the pitch, volume and EQ are modulated. Imagine a speaker facing you, then turn it away, so the volume and EQ/tone will change as the speaker goes off axis, and even you get a bit of phase cancellation to boot! The pitch modulation kicks in more as you speed up the rotation, much like a plane flying by overhead as it approaches the pitch goes up, and as it passes and goes away from you the pitch goes down. This is the same thing with a rotary speaker. Because of the effect there are usually tone knobs for bass and high on really leslies, those are EQ to emphasise or compensate for what is happening psychoacoutically.
My volca fm is coming in soon and I'm so excited. But I've been eyeing this for so long! 😭 I'm ready to pull the plug, but gotta properly save up for it.
I've been on the fence on whether I should buy a ASM Hydrasynth (the version with the keyboard) or possibly a Sub 37. Someone for the love of god *PLEASE* help me finally make the choice! If it's helpful, I own an MPC X and use my X as the brain of my operation. I use the MPC X for sampling, drums/percussion etc. and it's also the sequencer in my setup. This is exactly why I've been on the market to buy a synth for quite some time. I've been producing music for 20 years now, but up until purchasing the MPC X 4 years ago 99.9% of my experience has been working within a DAW. I have 20 years experience working within FL Studio. However, the MPC has really got me leaning more into hardware and that's why I'm on the market for a synth. I want something to pair up with my MPC X that gives me a ton of options for producing melodies, counter melodies, awesome basslines etc. I think the Hydrasynth would probably be better for what I'm looking for, but I'm not 100% sure because I've seen plenty of Sub 37 videos that had me drooling!
Hi Ricky, quite tempted by this synth as I no longer have a digital synth, but what differentiates it from say an old Waldorf Blofeld other than a bit more modulation, but less voices? I do like the layout, but for the price you could pick up a couple of the new Behringer boxes or an Argon 8 and still have change for a nice reverb, so the proposition would have to be quite convincing.
Hey man, back again with another question. Receive my hydra KB today. Sick synth, looks and sounds amazing. But, possible issue? The output is really low. Finally. A digital synth that doesn't want to be a cheaper analog synth sound alike. This is taking advantage of what digital can offer while still sounding great. Add in the warmth factor setting and it's a slam dunk. Is it analog? Nope but analog can't do what this can.
After my first analog synth (Juno) I have been sound designing on digital synths since the 1980's. This HydraSynth is my dream come true of what a digital synths can create. I could not understand why everyone was making digital synths trying to be analog, when with digital, a synth can extend deep into your imagination.
It’s really exciting to see digital synth designers pushing boundaries and not trying to re hash and emulate analog synths. I picked up the microfreak earlier this year and it’s so sick. Great vid as usual
Rotary = Rotary Speaker, for example a Leslie speaker. A Leslie speaker (cabinet) is an amplified speaker cab where the speaker cone is motorized and spins around in 360deg. The result is both an amplitude modulation (as the speaker moves from pointed at you, to away from you) as well as a subtle pitch shift due to the Doppler effect. They were most commonly used attached to a Hammond organ. The "lo/hi" (I assume, not used this synth) probably refers to the fact that on a Hammond there's a switch that allows you to adjust the speed of the Leslie speaker's rotation. Players would often use this as an effect -- you can hear it a lot on jazz organ type stuff -- resulting in an acceleration or deceleration of the speaker. For example, you could have it set to High and the speaker is spinning fast (so the rate of the amplitude change is quite fast, and the Doppler effect is more pronounced) and then, whilst playing, switch it to Low and the speaker would slowly decelerate, the amplitude change would be at a slower rate and the Doppler effect would be less pronounced. It's quite a common thing once you know what you're listening for. No idea if the the lo/hi parameter on this machine actually refers to that, but it would make sense! Anyway, thanks for the vid. Really impressed with the sounds from this lil box.
lo/hi could also refer to the fact that there were two different speakers rotating in a Leslie cabinet. one for the high frequencies, and one for the low frequencies. One could spin clockwise, while the other spun counterclockwise, and as you mention, at different rates of speed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_speaker#/media/File:Lesliebox_Animation.gif
Correction: as far as I know, the speaker itself stays in place and fire the sound up to the cone, that collects the sound into the short tube, and this tube is the axis on wich two horns rotate and radiate the sound to the sides.
No cones move, except in the regular way. The sound from the cones is channeled into the "treble horn" on top, and the "bass rotor" on the bottom, which are essentially 3 speed or two speed, and one of those speeds may be "stop". Even at stop there is variation, as the horn may be pointed away. The real magic is the speed change itself, which is why you see Hammond players hit the switch so often. The electronic vibratos, which the Hammond has 6, do not allow a smooth change of speed. Essentially the Leslie was an "acoustic LFO", or mechanical LFO, and obviously the last effect in any chain.
The speed at which you demonstrate crafting a sound, and the fact I could keep up while you were doing it, is testimony to great synth design. It’s all good to have depth in a synth engine, but here you have access to it all and have done the task by the time you finish saying what you want to do. Everything seems so accessible.
@@chromosundrift he is for sure! But even at this price point though I feel like you could consider this a "middle-ground" synth. The prices on the top-of-the-line stuff is much more than this, it's crazy.. That being said, I don't think anyone would NEED anything more than this beast though.

It just looks so straight forward for how to use it and has so many options to custom make some great patches. Absolutely beautiful synth, thanks for the video!
Nice video! But one minor correction (actually, not so minor) - you keep saying you are selecting a "Wavetable" to put into each of the 8 slots, but those are not wavetables, they are single, individual waveforms that you are building into an 8 slot wavetable, and since 8 slots really isn't enough for a wavetable, it's why ASM themselves are calling it a "Wavelist" instead (a traditional Wavetable, like what you would find in the Waldorf Microwave series, consists of a Look-Up table with 64 individual Waveforms that you can scan through.)
Ah! A bit like Ensoniqs own thing on the ts-10/12, also called "wavelist". The audio routing with buttons possibly inspired by Ensoniqs esq-1 as well... good stuff
"Rotary" is going to be a Leslie speaker emulation; Typically two horns that spin at different speeds, one for low frequencies the other for high. This creates a filter and something like a pseudo-Doppler effect.
Awesome video, I'm really leaning towards the desktop version now. Haven't made a final decision, but I dont think I really need the keybed, even if it has poly AT. BTW, its good to leave the cellphone at home sometimes. I know it's hard, and you might miss something, but what you gain is worth it.
12:30 When I hear the word Rotary in the context of a sound effect, I think of an amplifier cabinet from last century. I believe it was referred to as a Leslie. This cabinet had rotating speakers in it that would throw the sound out of the cabinet in different directions. is this a digital simulation of that physical amplifier cabinet?
totally different synths - they will complement each other but arnt really comparable. They do different things, in different ways. I have a peak, and will add either a Hydra or Argon.
Ingmar Kappers I did. I got the Hydra and mine was jacked. Super low volume, no bass...I had to have master volume full, all the OSC at full and I was still half the level of my other gear that were at half volume. So now I have a Peak. SOLID. I lost $800 in the end :(
Sets out to demo 5 top features, adds in another 25 out of enthusiasm. Loved the entire video. I am liking the user interface of the synth but none of the sounds you played actually made me want to buy it. I'd almost want to use it as a hardware controller for my soft synths if that makes sense.
A way to control both filters simultaneously but independently is by using the filter section for one, and the master control section for the other filter. Or using two macro’s , each for one filter. Hey, you can add a 3d macro that controls both of them but in opposite directions. And a4th one that controls the resonance in opposite directions.. :-)
Hey Ricky, thank you for the great coverage! I'm Dominic. It was great meeting you in person at Knobcon. Love the unpredictable patch you made, and the ending as well! . Little info here ;) - In Pre/Post FX pages, Slots 3 & 4 refer to Param 1-2 in Mod Dest, so you made the Rotary modulation right. - You can actually do both filters by having Filter Controls access one filter while accessing the other filter on Master Control. (Besides Macro) - The Drive/Morph knob acts as Morph only when it selects Filter 2.
How do you get at the missing knobs(parameters) on the desktop... LFO, ENV knobs and the Arps tempo, ratchet, chance, gate. And...do you think you miss having those on the desktop, as well as the ribbon, keys, chord/glide and wheels Thanks
A little tbh. It definitely felt a little bit more divey with this one, but it’s barely a few pages deep, and once you get used to it, as is with most things, it’s not that bad
I wanna see the Hydrasynth's polyphonic aftertouch keyboard MIDI's into the Peak's PAT and see how it responds. I think it's an absolute killer reason to have the Hydrasynth keyboard is it's ability to expressivly control all those synths out there that accept PAT.
Rotary is when they place a speaker in a cabinet and spin it around with a mic inside. It creates a whirring sound or flutter. Commonly used in organs to give it the “wah wahs”. It creates a small Doppler when the mic spins away.
Awesome! Love how you can see the time of the envelopes. That way you can calculate the timing for perfect on the beat attacks and stuff. How many seconds can you go up in the envelopes? Thnx for this vid. It is awesome and definitely put this on the GAS list. Next to the Zoia!
Honestly, it's incredibly intuitive. Obviously you can sit and edit forever, but there's no menu diving or anything. You just think what you want to do, then press the first buttons that come to mind and it magically does what you wanted. They've really nailed the UI.
Love the video. Great demo and great channel! I have the module version preordered myself and I can’t wait. Even more so now. Question: is there a way to set the grid layout to a chromatic keyboard similar to the Digitone/Takt and play it that way?

This. This right there. This is the real synth shit! Like a good dj reading his crowd, you know what we want to see reviewed. Good work mate
For a second there I thought I had clicked the wrong video cause I thought you were gonna say ASMR in the intro haha
Hahah that’s one letter short of a completely different ballgame.
don't get me wrong Ricky, you're a well-proportioned man, but that shirt and hat combo makes you look like David Byrne in his big suit
Lmao noooo 😭😭😂😂😂
Best synth on the market under $2,000, and the fact that it's only like $800 is incredible. Hey man keep the reviews coming!
Just scored one myself, waiting for it to arrive...(wrings hands in anticipation)
The pads have Poly-AT.
Opinion: Hydra vs Peak...sound only. Disregard features (since you’ve had hands on both). Thanks.
totally different synths - they will complement each other but arnt really comparable. They do different things, in different ways. I have a peak, and will add either a Hydra or Argon.
Peak sounds more warm and organic, Hydra sounds more digital (good digital not bad digital)
Both great but totally different sounds!
Get both. I did. Peak is a different beast
Ingmar Kappers I did. I got the Hydra and mine was jacked. Super low volume, no bass...I had to have master volume full, all the OSC at full and I was still half the level of my other gear that were at half volume. So now I have a Peak. SOLID. I lost $800 in the end :(
TRaddcliff Wow that sucks, no warranty?
Sets out to demo 5 top features, adds in another 25 out of enthusiasm. Loved the entire video.
I am liking the user interface of the synth but none of the sounds you played actually made me want to buy it. I'd almost want to use it as a hardware controller for my soft synths if that makes sense.
some new, free hydrasynth patches if you're interested:

What's amazing skill to play pads instead of piano keyboard ! 😮
And Yes - most comprehensive Hydrasynth video on YT ! ❤
When you were wondering if there was a way to adjust both filters at once, isn't that what you could use a Macro knob for?
you sir, deserve a hydra. duh! haha thank you
Ricky Tinez got one preordered and the wait is killing me! So I'm really grateful to you for making a long video like this! Love your patches.
Love the unpredictable patch you made, and the ending as well!
.
Little info here ;)
- In Pre/Post FX pages, Slots 3 & 4 refer to Param 1-2 in Mod Dest, so you made the Rotary modulation right.
- You can actually do both filters by having Filter Controls access one filter while accessing the other filter on Master Control.
(Besides Macro)
- The Drive/Morph knob acts as Morph only when it selects Filter 2.
Whhoooaaaa thank you man!! This is all great info. That FX slot 3/4 should be called Param 3/4 hahah
@@RickyTinez No problem man. Thanks for the suggestions :D
1:05 "kind of like your mind without a cell phone"🤣
I feel like everyone has one of these but me. Erg!
I can't wait to get a Hydrasynth. :)
Thanks for the great video, RT.
By far the most interesting synth out there nowadays. Excellent video!
wow the loud ass click at 14:17 made me jump out lol
How do you get at the missing knobs(parameters) on the desktop...
LFO, ENV knobs and the Arps tempo, ratchet, chance, gate.
And...do you think you miss having those on the desktop, as well as the ribbon, keys, chord/glide and wheels
Thanks
Dammit. The last thing I need is another bloody synth. But after this demo...
I preordered mine the day they were announced 🤦🏻♂️
I dont need another synth either Im really happy with my setup but I just cant stop drooling over this bloody thing lol
so you've had it a little while now....is the hype still the same or has it worn off a bit?
Thank you fir this passionate demo. I want it now. Best regards
That hat tho
The Hydras main feature is that it’s a Hydrasynrh.
I need to hear more low end sounds on this synth. Thanks for the dive in Ricky T.
Very interesting stuff - that lofi setting was very interesting indeed. 👍
Do you think it would pair well with a digitak???
Rotary is leslie speaker emulation i guess.
Awesome! Love how you can see the time of the envelopes. That way you can calculate the timing for perfect on the beat attacks and stuff. How many seconds can you go up in the envelopes? Thnx for this vid. It is awesome and definitely put this on the GAS list. Next to the Zoia!
The rotary is based on the Hammond organ. It litterally had a speaker rotating inside a box, to put it bluntly...The virus TI has this effect also.
Wish the module version had the ribbon 🙀
This needs a compact creations session
This thing is like a Z3ta+2 on crack coming to life, god damn i want one
I got some difficulties for my 1st analog minilogue xd, i can’t imagine the time it takes to ride this kind of synth complexity, awesome!
Question: is there a way to set the grid layout to a chromatic keyboard similar to the Digitone/Takt and play it that way?
there are a few different modes, i believe that is one of them. i can't recall the secific layout though :/
i cant wait to get this . i cant decide between the keyboard or the desktop version
why the fuck everything cost money?
this thing is sweet
Like i said and i will say it once again
HAIL HYDRA!
Great tut. I think I'd go for the keyboard version. Love the bit at the end with the ocean waves. Its a nice touch.
thanks for making it all the way through! haha. That was your bonus ;)
Is it fair to say it's sort of a... feather in your cap?
All the synth companies send out samples to the youtubers. I always wait for Tinez before making up my mind. Now if he would just put the coffee back in his intro...
haha coffee is dead. i drink it before i make the videos so it's gone before the intro starts ;)
Coffee provides the resonance to your personality filter?
So this or the PRO 3....I dont know what to do.
This video makes me order one of this🤔😁
Delayed envelopes and modulation are keyyyyyyyyyyyyy ... people sleep on that function so much for some reason....
And, “...cooking with fire*” 😎
