- This #MilitaryMonday introduces the United States "Marines' Hymn" which is the oldest official song in the United States Armed Forces authorized by the Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1929. This Hymn was first introduced by the first director of the USMC Band, Francesco Maria Scala. Its music originates from an 1867 work by Jacques Offenbach with the lyrics added by an anonymous author at an unknown time in the following years.
The Marine Corps has been part of the U.S. Department of the Navy since 30 June 1834 with its sister service, the United States Navy.
The Globe & Anchor Symbolism:
For more than a century, the Eagle, Globe and Anchor has been the symbol of the United States Marines. As today's new Marines were all taught when they were recruits, the eagle stands for nation, the United States, the globe stands for worldwide service and the anchor for naval traditions.
The Meaning of Semper Fi:
Latin for “Always Faithful,” Semper Fidelis is the motto of every Marine-an eternal and collective commitment to the success of our battles, the progress of our Nation, and the steadfast loyalty to the fellow Marines we fight alongside.
Lyrics:
From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.
Our flag's unfurled to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in ev'ry clime and place
Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job
The United States Marines.
Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.
Note: "The Halls of Montezuma" refers to the Battle of Chapultepec on 12/13 September 1847 during the Mexican-American War, where a force of Marines stormed Chapultepec Castle.
