Mother of god. Thats one of the nicest top/color combo's I've ever seen. It literally looks like its exploding. I really need to see this with clear coat!
Oh my goodness! You have d one a purple burst! Thank you BigD! I love this color! I love the figure in the top too! I so happy I found this vid! Way cool! You are awesome my man!
MAN! This is beautiful! Watched vid again and it's great! Thanks D! This how I want my guitar to look like when I do my build...when I do build. I'd like to have it on a quilted maple top. Oh wow, I'm excited! Thanks D!
Try polyester sanding sealer, sand it flat (without going through..) then polyester top coat 27x6 A18 Simtec poylester...90% hardness of glass, dryies fast (48 hours or more)sands very easy and buffs out like a mirror! also you can use a weeny roller instead of a HVLP gun. Came out great btw. I have never done a burst with dyes so this is very informative! Going to be staining a custom made guitar with a 5A quilted top in purple with then same dyes
thanks so much for sharing! i'm about to start my 2nd build which will have a purple burst, and this helped me a ton since i've never done a dye finish
Would be awesome to finish off these videos with a shot of the finished body, with the lacquer and everything. The un-lacquered version just doesn't do them justice. Just saying :)
Wow!!!! Looks amazing man! Great job. Is that top really Pine ? I've never heard of or seen Pine with a flame figure on it like that. Loved that brownburst quilted maple Iceman body you did too. The stain really enhanced the quilt figuring so well!!! I've been seeing some beautiful flame/curly Redwood bookmatched tops on guitars recently. The curl figuring is so '3D' and intense on it. I actually saw one that had a thick carved Curly Redwood top which had been stained to a Pinkish to Purple burst and it looked really stunning. I wouldn't have thought to stain a wood like redwood with a bright colour like that but it really made the figure pop and the end result was quite unique!
It's me or all of your guitar look alway more beautifull in the middle of the video? I never love the final result thought. At 3:00 minutes, this is my kind of guitar!
***** Cool, but you should find a trick to get the same result. Maybe with a spray protection or a over spray "shining glasses" style. :P Just a suggestion. It's not my bissness.
TheRevolus haha I know what you mean all in what you like. I wanted to go lighter on this one, the darker would have been cool too. I will be doing another purpleburst this one turned out great.
I was thinking the same thing. It looked better at the 3:00 mark. Don't get me wrong, it still turned out beautifully. I just like the darker look. I want to do this in cherry-red and black, I'm hoping to get a blood like color. Just got the stain today, wish me luck!
Hi Big D, watching your videos and Instagram channel as well. The work is outstanding! Could you please tell how you cleaned binding edges that were stained with top? Thank you in advance!
Thats how you make finishing mistakes, not understanding the effect the lacquer will have on the final product. Due to light refraction it should pop the color more, he is also trying to maintain the natural wood under it so there is a luster he gets from the texture of the wood as well. Lacquer causes wood to sort of shimmer.
Hello! Thanks for the great video! Can you share how you use your dyes? are you mixing them with water or lacquer thinner? do you recommend using Leather Dyes for best result?
It's really wonderful ! now i have to find a good quality guitar body and the dye in a hardware store or what (i don't even know if we have soluble dye in france, never found it). But i had a question, your wood grain is absolutely wonderful for this type of sunburst painting but if we had a basic wood (almost with no wood grain and wood lines) is it possible to add some kind of "top wood" (don't know the exact term) that would be higher quality to make a sunburst effect out of a "cheap" wood ? I see that manufacturer do this but i'm worried it might be difficult to do it ourselves..
Hey BigD great vids. Can I achieve this look on a guitar thats has been finished before? If I take down the finish and get the top to look as clean as possible again? Im pretty sure that the finish Im going to be removing is mostly a tinted clear coat. Also, its a veneer top. I would appreciate any advice you might have on this. Or please feel free to re-direct me to another video that you have made covering this. Thanks a lot! Love this channel , its the better then watching any TV or movie.
awesome except for the 'teardrop' shape. i like for the top by the neck to have the burst in it too. same with the lower curved piece under the neck. i know it's a lot easier to just blacken the whole thing but the purple should extend to it also.
i made that comment when he was talking about the teardrop shape and had them darkened in, then i went back to the vid ans was glad to see he extended the purple into the 'horns'.
Is there any reason you started with the purple first? I noticed on the lacewood orangeburst video you started with black then sanded back. Going to attempt a dark green burst on a jazzmaster body and was just curious.
Hi, FANTASTIC WORK! a few questions... Did you apply any kind of varnish or something before start apllying the purple and black colors? and how calls that kind of paint that you used on the guitar? greets from Argentina! (forgive my ban english)
Dude great work! but i have some questions... first, there is some reason why you don't make all de holes (bridge holes for example) before staining the wood? second, why don't you put any protection on the biding, the dye hasn't any effect on it? thanks!
I have a question about the prep. Do you wipe the wood down with a wet cloth before sanding to raise the grain so it doesn't raise when you dye it? or do you use the first coat as the grain raiser, then the sanding takes care of it? thanks!
oh man...oh man..purple heartwood...purple guitar..whimpers. I want a purple LP soooo bad. I've been looking at getting an Epi purple sparkle, and I've seen some on the $500 range but I have no money :/ I'd love a purple heartwood LP stained like this. I wish I had the tools and skill to make my own guitar :/ This is so beautiful.
You had a perfect finish at the 7.41 minute mark...but then you f*ucked it up completely...why? Oh, wait...I used the link below and it is beautiful. Congrats.
I am varitoneswitch on ebay. don't have anything listed right now. come sept everything goes that I have been working on. no one buys anything in the summer.
What the hell is figer Big D hahaha, are you talking about figure? I know I'm an asshole but I gotta break balls once and a while. Awesome guitar as always but sometimes I like the way it looks befor you sand it.
Mother of god. Thats one of the nicest top/color combo's I've ever seen. It literally looks like its exploding. I really need to see this with clear coat!
That purple is awesome. Well done.
This looks great. Researching for a purple burst idea for myself. Wish there was a pic of the final build.
From all your videos, I found this colour was the most beautiful
i LOVE a dark purple on a guitar you nailed that!
Oh my goodness! You have d one a purple burst! Thank you BigD!
I love this color! I love the figure in the top too!

What a great looking piece of wood.

I`ve seen a couply of your staining vids now, you are really talented with this!
thank you!
Love that colour
you killed it with the black sunburst ............................
Amazing.... Now i think i know what the colour of my next guitar is going to be!!
I love that color!
Thank you for a great demo! Beautiful finish! One question: for how long do you have to keep first layer of black dye before sending it? THank you!
That is some amazing figure on that wood. great looking work.
beautiful looking guitar. great video

That is a beautiful grain! I'm going to build a 7-string tele with this same finish and try to find a similar grain.

Do you make your own bodies? I had no audio on this computer. How much for like this guitar finished with a tremolo?
It's me or all of your guitar look alway more beautifull in the middle of the video? I never love the final result thought. At 3:00 minutes, this is my kind of guitar!
haha Its the wet look of the wood. I just buffed this sucker and its pretty sweet I think i need to do a quick vid of it.

Did you dilute the Transtint purple or used it full strength?
What brand of sanding sealer is best?
Hi Big D, watching your videos and Instagram channel as well. The work is outstanding! Could you please tell how you cleaned binding edges that were stained with top? Thank you in advance!
Looked better before the sanding job.
I agree.. looks like shit after he sanded the piss out of it. Horrible stain job.

Actually, a like the sanded one more
@@miked3168 i looked for your expertise and nothing. About like you...nothing
Hello , where can I get the sanding sealer please ? Thank you so much . Do you need tu finish with a varnish or TrueOil ?
sanding sealer can be purchased off amazon
Looks awesome....going to do this to a Charvel Pro Mod
Do you sand down the sealer prior to applying the lacquer? I’m about to do my own purple burst LP.
Hello! Thanks for the great video! Can you share how you use your dyes? are you mixing them with water or lacquer thinner?
do you recommend using Leather Dyes for best result?
Did you ever get an answer to this by chance?
@@JohnK-id1zjnope. I switched to nitrocellulose lacquer. I like it much better.
Looks good man. I like my airbrush for burst.
Could you use Danish Oil as the final coat to seal everything in?
Question, we don’t have to worry about the dye staining the binding?
Do you SAND before you put on your finish after the sanding sealer??!!!
Before the feathering, it looks like purple velvet!
Do you sand down the sanding sealer before applying the clear coat BigD?

with that awesome stain you should have just oiled it up with trueoil up to a gloss finish instead of bursting and sanding it.
When you say "feather" could you elaborate more please?
Are you putting the TransTint dye in alcohol or water ? What is the proportion of dye / liquid used ? Thank you for your time.
What is that little sander you are using? I like it. :)

Hey
BigDGuitars, what are you mixing the Transtint with?
So sanding sealer after stain. what if you have a situation that you need to use grain filler. Grain filler, Dye/stain, sanding sealer, lacquer?

This is so beautiful.
How do you scrape the binding without interfering with the stained wood?
That's amazing! Were you doing a swirling motion with the cloths when you applied the stain?
awesome id love that colour on my ibanez gax 30
lovely
Love purple, not a fan of black edges. I'd feather in a darker purple 💜
can you use this on leather?
I’m assuming you don’t have to wetsand the stained paint??
In the past you have started with the black and sanded that back......why the different approach this time ?
What was your dye/water mix?
So the transtint won't stain the binding?
does the stain not effect the binding at all? or are you just really confident with your staining? =)
Ben Wilson and I just got to the bit of the video where you mention that =P
can you use transtint and mohawk ultra on the same guitar?
1. What material did you use for put the dye or stain on the top of guitar body?
2. What material do you recommend to do this step?
Hey I'm wondering the same thing can this be done with stain?
@@marlinewilliams102 5 years later and I wonder the same...
How much to strip and paint an epiphone sg. Pro purple
how do you clean the binding after applying the dye, just wipe it off?
Scrap with a razor.
1:50 stop. It was purple.
But it's wasn't a burst, was it?
what paint did you use ?
Stain.
Dye
Shadow Image correct.
Looks like the top is maple, my wood supplier calls that "fishbone" figuring...
Would this work on mahogany?
It should as long as you fill the grain
Anybody able to tell me which type of clear coat is best for these dyed guitars? Acrylic Enamel or Laquer?
Laquer
Wow!!!

What kind of pain are you used? :)
angelus
Where are you selling your bodies? eBay? If so, under which name?
I am varitoneswitch on ebay. don't have anything listed right now. come sept everything goes that I have been working on. no one buys anything in the summer.
***** I would ;)
I'll check back in September then!
I want it
alguien me puede decir que tipo de tinta usa?
You should really,REALLY show a finished result picture at the end...You're skipping out on the money shot dude!
finished work is here: ua-cam.com/video/duHFbRwXbWg/v-deo.html
Take a drink every time he says purple.....
cheers!
So odd seeing this now, knowing how the transtint went the way of the dodo for Angelus, lol.
Should've left more of that awesome figured purple show. Way too much encroachment of black, much too dark IMO.
Can't you just paint on the guitar?
That's all you had to say was fuckin' pine, pine dont go on a goddamn guitar ,people.
He always sounds like he's about to cry
only when the comments are mean, sigh... hahahah
lol
The color is amazing, but personally, you ruined it going with a tear drop shape, I think you should have gone with just an edge around the guitar
@reverb
What the hell is figer Big D hahaha, are you talking about figure? I know I'm an asshole but I gotta break balls once and a while. Awesome guitar as always but sometimes I like the way it looks befor you sand it.
Eddie Julian Figer. I thought the same thing! Figer. What the hell is figer??
You make it look too easy bro
Looks nice, but that's not much of a burst.
I THINK THAT IS A MAPLE TOP NOT PINE ;-D
+john bounds port orford cedar.
john bounds sure looks like maple to me.
You sanded the bottom way to much, sanded out the figure!
what are the rags you use? do I need to use something specific?
