Apparently the reason Judy and Montgomery Clift were chosen to appear in the movie was because of their reputations for being erratic and unstable. The director wanted that facet of their personalities to seep into their characters and how they should act in such a scene. Perhaps if she had worked for a studio other than MGM in her heyday things might have been better and maybe her life longer but we'll never know. MGM and L.B. Mayer were very rough on their people. Great films but very costly to the people involved.
I don't agree at all. Judy was good here, yes, but her accent was not believable, her face shows ONE emotion and she appeared only for 6 minutes in this movie. Rita Moreno may not be such a legend, but she gave much more in "West Side Story" - besides brilliant dancing a powerful emotional performance from ecstatic happiness to volcanic anger to absolute desperation. I think the academy made a good choice.
I remember Moreno's dancing but don't recall her acting as being all that memorable. Judy's performance wasn't just good, it was extraordinary. Quality matters more than length. This was definitely an Oscar worthy performance.

She stood in here for Irene Scheffler Seiler, the woman who spent two years in a Nazi prison because she refused to denounce Leo Katzenberger, the real life Feldenstein who was murdered by the Nazis after a phony trial. Judy should have absolutely gotten the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, but it's hard to argue that Chita Rivera didn't deserve it for her role in West Side Story. I think that during the 15 minutes of her three scenes in this movie, the musical comedy actress put on one of the finest dramatic performances ever
I will forever adore Judy as Dorothy Gale in my second favorite movie of all-time... but dear God, was she ever so brilliant in this film. I wish she could've gotten the help she needed for her addictions, 'cause she really could've had an amazing second career as a dramatic actress, and her performance here is proof of that.
I had to watch this scene in memory of Judy who left us 52 years ago today, June 22nd. The cast in this film was a good one. Maximillian Schell played his part to the max. A great performance from him and everyone else.
That lady was so talented that she could dance with the best of them (Astaire, Kelly), sing with them (Sinatra, Merman) and what about this scene for real intense drama (with Schell, Tracy, Lancaster, Widmark) ??? She was one of a kind, a sensitive soul anybody could identify with, she forgave people who took advantage of her, incapable of a mean thought even for those who abused her, an artist who really loved her fans and they loved her inconditionally, and will do forever. I was 10 when she died and I remember the sorrow for her loss in media was such that I had to ask why, who was she ???. Then I watched The Wizard Of Oz (later I discovered that meant 'us'), and those marvelous That's Entertainment movies where her name was mentioned in such reverence and fondness by her fellow stars. Young people are discovering her thanks to the movie Judy. I recommend her 1963 movie I Could Go On Singing. While not a great movie it is a showcase for her marvelous singing. This film has some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. Judy Garland was amazing in this role. So heartbreaking. Same with Maximillian, Tracy, Lancaster, Widmark, and the other truly devastatingly heartbreaking role played by Montgomery Clift.
Judy had 3 scenes in this movie. There is another scene of her on the stand. It comes before this one and in my opinion is equally great- just not as emotional. Her dramatic scenes in I Could Go on Singing are really amazing as well. She was a genius.

She was nominated for this performance but Rita Moreno won Best Supporting Actress in West Side Story in 1961. Garland did get a Juvenile Academy Award in 1939. No idea about any effect Academy politics might've had on her winning. Her own self-destructive behavior didn't help her and sadly she died quite young at age 47.

@Ben A Not at all. You've fallen into the same trap that many people have. Just because the Nazis had "socialist" in their party name doesn't mean any more than "democratic" means in the official name of North Korea.

Max Schell was born in Vienna and raised there and in Zurich by his Swiss father and Austrian mother. He won an Oscar for this performance.

Judy should have won the Oscar. The part was small, but the performance was brilliant. Amazing A Star Is Born-she should have won the Oscar, Judgment at Nuremberg-should have won the Oscar. It's obvious, the Academy didn't like her. The no wins is that because Spenser Tracy ticked off the Academy off in 1940 because Judy didn't get nominated for the Oscar for Oz?
She was nominated for this performance but Rita Moreno won Best Supporting Actress in West Side Story in 1961. Garland did get a Juvenile Academy Award in 1939. No idea about any effect Academy politics might've had on her winning. Her own self-destructive behavior didn't help her and sadly she died quite young at age 47.
@@billboth4814 I know she was nominated for Judgement, which she didn't win. But, I believe she did win the Golden Globe for both Judgement and A.S.I.B. . I'm just wondering if the
reason she didn't win the oscar was because of some kind of dislike. She got snubbed twice. And losing to Grace Kelly really was a rip off. Most people didn't think she should have been nominated.

But, according to Mr. Tracy, when Judy broke down on the witness stand that entire sound stage froze, no one said anything for a minute or two. Finally Mr. Tracy broke the silence, and said something like NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL ACTING. I read this in a magazine, and that's Mr

Most historians would agree that if the US had stayed involved in world affairs & had kept strong militarily that Hitler & Stalin would never have become as dominant as they did.
You make a number of extraordinary assertione. If anyone "led" the US into WW I, it was British intelligence. And it is unlikely that the Brits would have succeeded had the Germans not had the incredible stupidity to sink a liner with many Americans aboard and then to try to conspire with Mexico against the US.
@GretschDog The propaganda value of sinking a liner full of women and children including several hundred Americans far outweighed any gain from keeping some rifle ammunition from British troops.
In any event, unrestricted sub warfare & the Zimmerman telegram played a much bigger role than the sinking of the Lusitania in getting Wilson to declare war.
I am not entirely sure what you mean. Is history complex? Of course. I am not a great believer in conspiracy theories. Even to the extent conspiracy theories have any validity, history tends to confound the best laid plains of mice and men.
What does it matter why? The fact remains that it was stupid to sink the liner. That was exactly what the Brits and Anglophile Americans like the Morgans wanted the Germans to do.
The infamous Zimmerman telegram is well documented. What is less well known is that the Mexicans (wisely) declined to go along with the German entreaty.
And Zimmerman corroborated the authenticity of the telegram!
In what way? As I say, even with the conspiratorial efforts of the Brits and the House of Morgan, if the Germans had not been so incredibly stupid, it would not have mattered.

He puts a cruiser task force in the Philippines, right in their shipping lanes, and issued a memo that said - well, if you lose one cruiser that's OK, just don't lose them all. And the navy didn't have to be at Pearl Harbor either. They would never have been hit at San Diego.
On one hand, I have no problem with provoking someone and using their response as an excuse to go ballistic. On the other hand, I do have a problem with lying about it.
