I adored Patty Duke, and of course Judy Garland. I saw Patty Duke in a small convenience store in Burbank many years ago. She was in shorts and barefoot. I think she was at the counter getting cigarettes. I wanted to go up and say Hi, but I respected her space. I wasn't 100% sure it was her. When she went to her car I noticed her personalized plates said Patty. I had missed my opportunity to say hello to one of my favorite actresses. May she R.I.P.
Patty was great! She was a tremendous talent. She was also a wonderful human being. She helped people come out of the closet with manic depression. She inherited this illness. It took a terrible toll on her relationships and her life. She was one of the lucky ones. Lithium was the miracle drug for her. It isn't always. Patty kept working and turned in many, many wonderful performances. Patty was brave enough to speak out, write books, and advocate for the mentally and emotionally ill. I am glad she found stability and happiness in a long term relationship. She was very courageous. She was also very gallant and tried to mend fences or atone for prior bad behaviors whenever she could. She was a class act all the way.
Anna (as she liked to be called) was very kind and understanding in painting a picture of Judy Garland. She was so careful in her wording. I love both of them.
As a child, I always had a hard time watching her. Her mannerisms and fidgeting were difficult for me. Today, it's different. I still see those but I hear the quality and expression in her voice and acknowledge her as the master of popular song that she is.
Judy Garland did so much & still, to this day does so much for the World of Show Business because she constantly reminds us what real talent is. She accomplished so much in those short 47 yrs than anyone ever has. Yet people keep bring up her personal problems. Anyone who's ever seen a clip of Judy in front of a camera will see a STAR that's just amazing! When she refused to work its because she was ill & couldnt give us the Judy we all were used to seeing & hearing. She was worked to death.
Judy Garland was one of the most accessible stars to her fans. She was down to earth and she respected and loved her fans and it showed each time she performed. Even now on youtube, whenever she sang she is the only singer that can sing to a packed house & millions of ppl on tv, and still make each person that she was singing to just them. Valley of the Dolls wasnt the right vehicle for Judy. Her fans couldnt see her being humilated by getting her wig torn off even if tho it was just a movie.
How great it would've been to hear her deliver those bitchy lines at the beginning. Ms. Lawson you haven't signed the contracts - - AND I DON'T INTEND TO!!!! Only hit to come out of a Helen Lawson is Helen Lawson - and that's MEEEEEEEEE, baby REMEMBER?!? 😆
@farrellmcnulty909 Miss Susan Hayward agreed to do the movie ONLY if Miss Garland was paid her full salary. " She's a star. You don't do that to a star" ( Susie also demanded- and got- " twice what you contracted to pay Garland ")
Patty Duke was the epitome of a strong woman! A survivor since she was a child! I loved her as if I'd known her. I grieved uncontrollably at her passing. I still can't wrap my head around that she's gone! She will always live on in out hearts! R.I.P. Anna ❤
Still bums me out and makes me sad that she passed on.. And then just recently, I read that she was the original choice (All due respect to Hayley Mills) for ''The Trouble With Angels'', along side with Mary Badham ! What A TRIP that would have been !
Richard Michaels The greatest actress ever! I was in the Castro theater in the 70's. It's almost 2020 and Hollywood runs a global pedophile child sex trafficking government. Wonder what she knew.
Wow, I never realized so many people disliked Patty Duke. She was a big part of my childhood, and I think she's awesome. Very talented but always very down to Earth too.
Kudos to Patty for speaking so kindly of Judy. It was a difficult time in Judy's life and Patty reveals to us what a decent human being she is by her tolerance and patience for the glorious Judy. They are together in Paradise while all the other haters are with the Roses and Mark Robson
Delusional Surfer Bob Who the F do you think you are? Let’s see your photo. You’re a sad POS if all you care about is what people look like. You’re not that far removed from being a racist, actually. You are surely a lousy excuse for a human being.
She is the reason that V.O.T.D's is my favorite movie. She was a stellar lady as well as an actress. Her portrayal of Helen Keller was brilliant and although many remakes were done, no one who followed playing the role of Helen could come close to Miss Dukes performance. R.l.P and know you'll never be forgotten.
There is no doubt that Judy is more talented (than just about everyone) but Patty Duke is very talented in her own right. I don't think she is telling a bad story about Judy Garland at all. In fact, I think it's a rather heartwarming story.
Patty Duke was a child star on Broadway playing Helen Keller at a very young age, like under 10 years old and was remarkable. She was not a "hack" by any means. She had a lot of struggles which were not of her making, read her bio.
Patty Duke was always working as a child… Many people are unaware of the numerous commercials she did, ads, and smaller roles such as two Christmas performances for television. In two, she worked with the great Helen Hayes ( as a Nun )… She worked and worked, doing many roles in early 1950's television.
Now I always thought that Judy, even if she had no other talent, was a TERRIFIC story teller. But Patty, bless her everloving heart, is right there with her. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for the set of Valley Of The Dolls.
Regarding the suit anecdote: I saw an interview on another video with a wardrobe person who worked with Judy and said it was hard to find clothes that fit her in stores because of her height and figure. So the wardrobe crew on her movies would often make pieces she could wear in daily life to help her out.
God Bless you Patty your amazing and very honest as ALWAYS ! It's nice to hear you be one of the few to really tell it like it is. Thanks for sharing this Video ~
Awesome story! I grew up on Nick at Nite reruns of The Patty Duke Show and as anyone who was alive the last thirty or forty years I know of poor beautiful tragic Judy. Great vid! 👍
It doesn't matter that she barely knew Judy Garland. The story is about Judy, not Patty. And it seems that Judy could leave a profound impression only being around a person once or twice.
What a great story. Patty Duke and Bruce Villanch. Wow. Love to see the entire interview. She was so honest about everything. May her memory be a blessing.

Patty Duke was a wonderful actress and I have always loved watching her in films and tv. I love 'the movie industry so I enjoy these 'backstage' interviews revealing the' real life' characters of the actors and actresses especially of classic Hollywood. Patty was such a charming funny person herself a survivor.
1. Anna looks her age, which is refreshing in Hollywood, but she is NOT horrible looking. She is gorgeous still. 2. Judy was talented. Anna is talented. People forget that Judy and Anna were / are very similar. I often wonder if Judy did not suffer with bipolar disorder (manic depression) herself. Anna is not bad-mouthing Judy as much as reliving the memories of that time. You can feel how much respect she had for that woman. Rude comments are unnecessary, ignorant & revolting.
Thanks for posting this piece of Hollywood history. I feel grateful to live in a time when Patty Duke & Barbara Parkins are still alive...it would have been great if Sharon Tate got to be the age that Patty is in this clip.
What 2 incredible talents both Patty Duke and Judy Garland were. Patty was fortunately able to conquer many of her demons - Judy was not. Judy was abused by Hollywood starting at a very young age and Patty was taken advantage of by the horrible Rosses. But they gave so much to the world because of their talents.
@@liamkilburn2456 Just curious. Of the hundreds of random women you ask "How are you doing?" how many have given you the time of day, much less hooked up with you?

Its so weird. Some directors condone alcohol and drug use on the set, and its a well know fact and secret that there are drug dealers lurking about selling their wares to celebrities and anybody else, and yet when it gets out of hand, the powers that be throw the actors/actresses/crew out on their butts and then refuse to even acknowledge their existences anymore.
I think this lady is wonderful. She has survived never having a childhood. Just like a lot of great childhood stars. They have been taken advantage of and misled. But she is a survivor and I for one salute her and any other actor or actress who has gone through this, just to give you a Great movie or what ever else media to watch.

Patty Duke was being very kind, such empathy towards Judy. Both were amazing talents, missed by millions. RIP girls
Patty Duke was such a great actress. I don't care if it was on the big screen or the Lifetime channel movies, she was great.
She did some so-so sitcoms on FX (or was it Fox) when that was getting off the ground. I watched them for her.
Nothing wrong with Lifetime movies- Patty made anything good.
