I will never forget Peter Williamson and his camera car, it was unbelievable and breathtaking at the time, If I had the $$$s I would have bought a Celica on the Monday even though I was a Holden bloke. 9th outright and two classes down while commentating, I was blown away.
Wow I remember the camera in Celica the best vision ever at the time, I loved the different classes. That's when the race was real, racing cars that you could buy off the showroom floor.
I was there in 79 and drove up in my 1966 chev impala from liverpool, it was freezing in that 2 man tent the night before the race and rained the morning of the race from 5am. i went to see the camaro,s race who were heavily handicapped so they couldn,t win. I think it was the last year for the Toranas / Vauxhalls from HB to UC.
I drove a stock Gemini down the mountain "once" the brakes stopped working, engine braking useless, had to pull the hand brake. I also had a big birthday cake on the back seat! It was 7am on a Sunday morning!
The Falcons and Toranas sound completely different. Is that because the Falcons had a 351cu and the Toranas a 308cu? Great memories of racing back then. I remember being in front of the TV for most of the Sunday in Perth watching 'The Great Race' from the mid 1970s onwards.
When Bathurst was interesting with all the different classes on track together.
Fantastic I loved that era of racing bought back so many memories
Thanks for sharing mate. Back when Bathurst was more of an Everyman race . Great footage that triggered some great memories.
Great memories, how much has the mountain changed over the years, loved these cars
Thanks man, that was awesome.
Appreciate your time so I could enjoy this👏🍻✌

78 was the year I built my first of many turbo 186 Holden motors in a HD panel van
The three “R” of motor sports Real cars,Real Driver’s and Real racing
Real Roads.
Priceless 🙏🙏🙏
good times . not like the corporate crap racing we have today .
Damn, you had me with that 351 in the Capri.
A Bathurst model Gemini, now that'd be a rare ride...

Nice vid, ford bailed due to gm bias like every manufatuurer
maybe they could bring this type of racing back to test the drivers real skills

Yes
Mate, pearler of a vid!
Kerry Packer couldn't get the televised rights so he entered the Channel 9 Comaro with the big number 9 plastered all over it
Great Video! Next time use a tripod please!
the A9X was so dominant they did bother racing the new VB commy
It was still called the Hardie - Ferodo 1000 in 1979 and changed in 1981.
Awesome video!!
Near 10 seconds between the top ten
This was the ‘Hardie -Ferodo 1000’…..the ‘James Hardie ‘ title did not occur until 1981.
Should have driven my Barra turbo in first gear... probably still will have beaten Brock with all 4gears
yeah probably, If you could drive ay.
You might have to build a time machine first champ 😎
