Great video, I also have a Primecom Tech EVSE charger that ive been using for the past few years and im definitely happy. I initially had some questions, and the company helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the informative video!

Mine stopped working. Think it’s the connection from the charger to the car. Anyone have any tips

Probably the kill switch in the plug. Check the resistance.

Thanks for your video. Just a mote that CE mark is not equivalent to UL ETL, TUV or other nationally recognized testing Labs (NRTL). CE mark represents a manufacturers declaration that the marked device complies with all EU directives that are applicable to the product. In fact the CE mark can be legally displayed even if evaluation of the product is based on self test and declaration (no third party testing agency is involved). It is a mistake to conclude that the presence of the CE mark denotes safety agency compliance. There is no way to know that unless you are able to view the manufacturer's Declaration of Conformity (DoC) that indicates what directives, harmonized standards, and test agency involvement were the basis of placing the mark.

I went with the COUPLAGO unit. Looked at others like Shells version. I needed a lvl 1 and 2 combo and was surprised by how few choices we had. Wish I had known about tesla tap before and would have gone with their portable since it auto adjusts to amps.
Cheers and thanks for the content

Thanks for the comment! I also didn't know about the Tesla unit until recently - long after I had already purchased my Primecom Tech.

Even if your EVSE has a fixed current limit, you should still be able to limit it to something lower from your EV, just need to remember to set that before plugging in. From the few OEM EVSE tear-downs I have seen, it also appears that manyt OEM "120V" EVSEs are universal internally. I wish more of them did like Tesla's EVSE with swappable plugs.

Yes, if you car can do that. I feel that all vehicles should have that option. Unfortunately, mine does not. It seems like Ford may be going the Tesla way with the Mach-e Charger, but I think it only comes with two plugs.

The Volt/Bolt only let you limit to 8A for 120v charging. As soon as they see 240v, it’s all up to the EVSE.

@@emmettturner9452 My mother has the stock 120V EVSE that came with her 2020 Bolt and it does 12A, just got to enable GPS and set home location to make it automatically go 12A. It will still do 12A elsewhere, though it needs to be manually set each time.

@@teardowndan5364 Yes. That’s exactly what I’m talking about.
The car defaults to 8A on 120v in North America, but the standard NEMA 5-15 plug is supposed to be good for 15A, 12A continuous. The reason it defaults to the EVSE’s “full” 12A on 240v is because it can more safely assume it’s not a general use outlet that’s worn out from frequent unplugging. You can manually override to 12A if you know your outlet can handle it (doesn’t get hot) and you can use GPS to automate this if you regularly use the portable EVSE at home.
All NEMA 5-15R receptacles are rated for 12A continuous but in the real world a lot of them were melting from worn, high-resistance, contacts… including the one in our garage after using the Volt’s override to charge at 12A. That’s why we finally put in a 240v circuit. :)
The reason I put “full” in quotes up there is because their late model Volt and pre-2023 Bolt EV unit is actually a ClipperCreek Gen2 16A unit but the GM firmware limits it to 12A max. The AmazingE version is the exact same except with the 30A NEMA 15-30 plug and different firmware. It goes straight to 16A since that’s a 47% margin. Rule of thumb is at least 20%, hence, 12A max on a 15A receptacle.
Even then I found a new NEMA 14-30 receptacle with a worn ground socket after only a few uses since it wasn’t intended for frequent unplugging (dryer, oven, etc). That’s why people recommend getting a commercial or industrial grade socket if you don’t hard-wire your EVSE and need to unplug frequently to carry it with you.

There are two versions of the CE .mark that look very similar. One is the European CE that is roughly equivalent to our UL. The other has the C and E a little closer together and only means it was made in China. Easy to mix up, even side by side.

You keep calling it a charger but it is not a charger. As the title says it is an EVSE.

Yup. Although technically incorrect, to my brain, "charger" feels like the correct word.
