My senior year of high school. I became a Mavericks fan watching this series, and I still am to this day. June 04, 1988 was a bittersweet day for me. I graduated that day, but that’s the day the Lakers beat Dallas in game 7 of the WCF.
We got our revenge by sweeping the Lakers in 2011 on our way to the Chip.

CBS in the 80's was so good.
The intros set the tone for all those great Playoff Series.
In the 90's, the great Playoff matchups continued. Bob Costas narrating to those opening vignettes followed by "Roundball Rock" was the pennical.

A much better playoff outing for these Mavs, pushing the ShowTime Lakers to 7 games in the West Finals.
Much better for the Mavs, after their brutal first round exit in the previous playoffs to the 7-seed Sonics, who had a losing record
Mavs first season in the NBA was the 1980-1981 season, and they had some nice teams in the 1980s, with this 1988 playoff run being their greatest run.
And then their brutal 1990's decade started, until the arrival of Nash-Dirk-Finley-Don Nelson-Cuban changed everything in the new millennium

The '88 Mavs are one of my personal "best teams" to never win a title! Their strengths were: 1)they were big, extremely long, could protect the paint as well as any team and, could be an absolute force on the glass, leading the NBA in TOTAL and OFFENSIVE rebounding in '88 2)could run-the-break or play half-court, 3)Had great outside shooting with Aquirre, Harper, Perkins, Blackman, and Davis, 4)Had solid post-up options in Aquirre, Perkins, and periodically Donaldson, 5)Were a GREAT free-throw shooting team, shooting 79%(4th '88), 6)Were an excellent passing team at ALL 5 positions, 7)Could switch on screen-action w/o compromising themselves defensively, 8)Tremendous home crowd! Their few weaknesses were: 1)Decision-making was sometimes careless and questionable, 2)Could rely on their outside shooting too much, 3)Effort and consistency was sometimes an issue, especially with Aquirre, Perkins, and Tarpley. Though the rosters were slightly different each year, the Mavs and Lakers played some hard fought series in '84, '86, & '88! Mavs would win on occasion at The Forum during the regular season but, couldn't quite get over-the-hump in the playoffs and beat the Lakers. Lakers had difficulty with Dallas's length, size, shooting, and quick guard-play but, in the end, the Lakers were just too good with the 3 HOFers, enormous experience, and battle-tested intelligent play!

You mean like when Harper ran out the clock cause he thought they were ahead, but were tied and then ending up loosing in OT!? BTW Lakers had 3 HOFs, but probably should be 4 with Byron Scott. One of the best to never make the All Star Game. Strick is probably number 1 in that category.

@@terrancesmith428 Exactly! Scott and the Lakers were playing some of their best playoff basketball during the 80's during that 11-0 stretch to the finals. The 9-day layoff doomed the Lakers! Riley took them to Hawaii, where they use to hv their camp and, he practiced the hell out of them to keep them in shape. The night before the Gm.#1, Scott tore his hamstring and, Magic tore his in the 3rd quarter of Gm.#2 which, the Lakers were controlling and playing well at the time. Playing w/o Scott was difficult enough but, w/o Magic- it was a wrap! Taking out 40pts a gm is unrecoverable plus, Scott's defense on Detroit's guards. Even w/o those two, the Lakers were still competitive. Worthy was amazing in #3 & #4! Had the Lakers been healthy and, still been able to maintain their level-of-play they were playing with against Phoenix, I think they would hv stood an excellent chance at a 3-peat! Part of the reason the '88 series went to 7gms was because of the two previous 7gm series against Utah and Dallas. Lakers were gassed! When both teams were playing their A-games- the Lakers were the better team! But, that's not how it always plays out. Would hv been nice to see what would hv happened!

@RamsLakersDodgers The 9-day layoff killed the Lakers! They went to Hawaii and practiced hard for 3hrs a day to keep in condition. Had the Lakers played Detroit healthy with the same rhythm and level-of-play they had against Phoenix, they would hv 3-peat! Forget what year that was changed. Just two years prior to this the owners wanted to swap Worthy for Aguirre and Jerry West jumped in and said no dice. Worthy would go on to be a major force for the lakers the next few years - especially in 87 and 88. Aguirre would get two rings with the Pistons. @@coreyortiz9913 yea I agree. the new “Mavs” font is nice tho. But the rest of the uniforms are just too gimmicky now, same goes for the rest of the teams. They need to all go back to the 1990’s uniforms! start back from there, then go to the early-mid 2000’s. Classic uniform era, in my opinion.
