❗️❗️❗️85% of parrots are either resold, given away, or abandoned within just 2 short years of being purchased. ADOPT DONT SHOP!
I cannot stress enough how heartbreaking this sad truth is.... Too many people impulse buy parrots because of cute or funny traits they've seen in other birds. No two parrots are alike...
A life stuck in a cage is cruel and so unfair to these magnificent beautiful creatures.
    They deserve the absolute best!
So if you are interested in a parrot, adopt one because you have the time and energy and if you want to save them from a life stuck behind bars, not solely because they are cute or funny etc.
parrots are a LIFETIME commitment. They can live up to 80+ years!!
I've given up many many things to give my two parrots the best life they can possibly have! (Night out, gone on weekends, vacation time, a clean quiet house, extra money.. Etc.)
But it's all worth it, my parrots are my family and I love them like my children!
Please DO YOUR RESEARCH before adopting.
After all, we have our friends, our jobs, and our hobbies...
    They only have us💗❗️❗️

A while ago I inherited 23 year old African grey (Eric). His first home was with a man who kept him in his cage for the first 20 years of his life. The only interaction he got was feeding and the occasional scratch. He then got given to another man who kept him for a few months then got bored. He then got given to a friend of my family (who I inherited him off) they could no longer keep him as they were getting old. When I first adopted Eric he would never step up he didn't want to come out of his cage and when o gave him fresh fruit and veg (which he never previously got given) he would throw it out and start to snap his feathers. Now 9 months later he's completely bonded with me, I've recently been able to stroke his back and tickle him. For his 24th birthday I got him a Java Tree (which he hates). I'm mentioning this because Gotchas story reminds me a lot of Erics. Although it was a lot more work and he may never be the "perfect parrot" I wouldn't trade him for the world and would always adopt not shop.

zaimah Begum-Diamond So sad 😢 I can't adopt as in my country there are only dog & cat shelters, no birds are neglected a lot here as we are a small populated nation

What country do you live in? If it is possible to buy parrots there are unwanted parrots. I hate to think of what happens to them if the rescues don't take them.

I live in east texas, no parrot rescues here, the only place you can get a bird is at petsmart, and they dont have parrots, just parakeets.

zaimah Begum-Diamond Moluccans are on the watch list right now though.
I do agree, but they need to place some back into the Wild from sanctuary’s or aviaries SOMEHOW? If possible. I’ve heard they aren’t good with breeding in captivity though (Moluccans specifically).

It's so wonderful to see people promoting responsible animal care. I'm the very proud and loving owner of a Pink & Grey Galah, William and two Wieros, Penny & Suzi. They are a lot of work but so worth it. All three were rescues and now the loves of my life (along with my 4 pythons and 6 shingleback lizards...oh and my fiancé, Tom)
Im also a wildlife rehabilitator in Western Australia so I have the privilege of caring for wild birds, mammals and reptiles.
Keep advocating for adopt don't shop and being a good pet owner. You have a beautiful family xxx

Thanks so much for sharing your love and passion with us! As a cats woman, with my husband being a dogs man, we've adopted a green cheeked conure 1 1/2 year ago (used to clip wings). All went so well, we decided to get an African Grey 5 months ago, Enzo... who also adopted my husband as his human!! 😕 I feel so much left out although I'm home all day and feed (prepare fruits/veggies brochette daily and grains), clean, play, talk, dance, sing, shower once a week... and still he bites me to bleed (which makes it impossible for me to potty train) and there's noooo way he'll let me pet him 😢 he'll only come on my forarm when necessary. Both Gizmo and Enzo can fly around in the house, but not out of their cage at the same time, as Enzo the Grey already attacked Gizmo the conure once who almost lost one eye... Is there any bit of advice you can share with me as I'm running out of energy and... passion? Merci beaucoup ☺ you are my inspiration!

Great videos! You have such a beautiful family! I have an adopted Green Cheek Conure. We have had him for about 3 and 1/2 years. He has come a super long way, but we still have a lot of problems with biting. We don't know exactly how he was treated in his previous home(s), but we were told that he was seized by the police in a meth lab raid, which is how he ended up at the shelter we adopted him from. He seems to go through cycles where the biting will be less frequent, but then he will bite my husband and I multiple times in just a few days. The biting has been rather bad recently, so I was hoping to get a little advice from you. Gotcha and Letty are amazing birdies, and they are so lucky to have such a patient and knowledgeable Mommy! Thanks so much for reading this and for sharing all of your videos!

Why not? Sounds like they know what they can handle. Some people don't have the patience or dedication to endure getting bitten in order to hopefully one day have a respectful bird, she said in the video she got bit so many times and blood was drawn but she didn't give up, I don't think I could handle that, which is one of the many reasons I won't get a cockatoo.

@@meadowfrance you might want to stay away from birds then, Sorry to say but any bird you will try to handle can bite you. I have a 5 year old umbrella cockatoo and my wife and I have both been biten by him. Yes it hurts when it happens but we have found that it only happens when there is a reason. My wife got bite in the neck once because sonny was on her shoulder and she moved wrong casuing sonny to lose his balance and unfortunatley their beak is like a hand for them so it happens. But as long as you are careful and dont try to scare themn either you will be fine. I actually get my UC to swing from my finger with his beak and it does not hurt at all.

I don't need to get one there's literally hundreds of them squawking around where I live so I get to see them do their random funny stuff all the time. They like to chat to each other as they fly past and they are really loud.

Katie thank you so much for not wanting to breed birds. I have rescued all types of animals from a 16.2 hand very large and lanky very lame thoroughbred ex racer and broodmare whose left front leg would not bend even staying arched in front of her when laying down that was headed to slaughter and many more SPECIAL pets. Although she could never be ridden and i have NEVER bred any animal she taught my two year old daughter how to sit a horse and to ride at three. My daughter does rescue now. i permanently injured my spine in 1990 and the last 14 years of my most damaged horses life she was never ridden although i still spent most of my days sitting or just touching just being near her. She was banned from all stables in my area and was scheduled for slaughter and was bought for meat price. I spent most of my days with her for the next three months not working her always but being near. Her nose had a broken boney ridge from their stud chains and the sides of her velvety mouth had scars from their bits. When my daughter and i were invited to that last stable the trainers complimented that she moved like a thoroughbred although she had excellent breeding and was clearly a standardbred pacer ex harness racer. As she stood there so quietly not moving i explained that Tasha as i named her was in fact Thunder Mist her registered name. They all became very loud and shouted there was no way Thunder Mist would behave so well. As i got off to show her tatoo another trainer yelled that it was her he would recognize her very low front heels anywhere. They then had a great discussion how i should breed her as her bloodlines were excellent and the foal quite valuable. i thanked them and quietly explained how i would never breed and never get rid of any animal until GOD takes them. She as all my horses is buried under the ground that they ran freely over after death from old age. No matter the animal and even knowing they had excellent lives with me i still miss them all although i was blessed to have them so many years. i explained this because there are so many horses that are kept until the owner gets bored or tired of the expense then they are passed around many if not most suffering terribly and then their true hell on earth starts as they head to slaughter where that death is even horrible. i have taken all sizes all types of animals down to hamsters and domesticated rats. I watched dogs and cats suffer horribly when dumped to BE FREE. Oh yes free of everything like food water and shelter and lay at the side of the road where dumped enduring so much but still waiting for the scum that left them until they were hit or to thin and weak to really run away anymore. I have been so blessed to have shared my life with each one. i also had many handicapped animals including a blind horse a blind dog a blind cat and deaf dogs and cats. As long as things remained the same others would not believe they were different because you couldn't see it when they moved around. My vet placed 3 dogs with me. Another vet at another area i lived jokingly said i ran a rehab home for animals. I have not meant this about me but all the wonderful babies already out there and even the handicapped that most would not have that are so special and not alone because of themselves but the owners that ultimately did not care about them. It makes me so angry to watch people breed animals for a source of money never caring about the mother or young. Among my many rescues were many purebreds not just the horses but dogs cats and even the rats. Some had cost alot of money but that didn't stop the abuse and neglect. Im sorry to have written so much but as well as wishing alot of breeding to stop i also wanted others to know that any pet has a potential of giving back so much more than we give them even those that are handicapped in some way. Any animal with any problems was made that way by a lousy owner. Please research and if you are wanting a purebred please contact rescue groups. There are so many that are saved by them but there are millions of every pet type that die each year in shelters because of over and careless breeding. Katie your bird channel is the only one i watch and i thank you again for sharing your time and family with us. You are very special and little Ollie steals everyone's heart. i am a 65 year old great grandmother and now because of my spine injury can barely walk. i now have two cats and they like every pet i have owned are neutered and spayed. i lost my last two dogs last year within six months of each other and it hurt so badly i could not get another dog till now because i was afraid i wouldnt be able to give it my heart because my grief was so bad. Thankfully my heart has almost healed.

I have to thank you for the amazing job you do taking care of gotcha and letty. Your channel inspired me to get a parrot myself. Thanks and keep up the good content. 😌

I love ur videos!! I have a nearly 1year old corella. I was wondering how u can get gotcha and letty to stay so calmly on your hand. I see in your videos that they seem happy to just sit there with you, while my bird gonzo will not stop trying to get on my shoulder and has chewed holes in any clothes that I wear around him, including constantly trying to get to my glasses and anything I am wearing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well done for speaking out against breeding and speaking up in favour of adopting unwanted and abandoned birds. You have a great platform for spreading this good message and you have used it with charm and politeness. A lovely channel generally 💕

Hi Katy! Ollie is just adorable, such a happy baby. My question: How would I go about getting experience with cockatoos? I have always loved them and really, really want to adopt one but I hesitate because they can be so difficult to take proper care of. What can I do to get experience and knowledge about them?

Gotcha is one of the most funny birds I have ever seen. If I have a bad day, then I watch some Gotcha's videos and after that I'm good to go.
Btw, You are a very pretty lady ;)

I know this was published 3 years ago but I'm a new subscriber. Your birds are so gorgeous and Ollie is such a beautiful boy. Nothing is cuter than a chubby baby. You should be commended for keeping your animal and human family so at ease with each other. I saw a video of an older Ollie playing with Gotcha's head and he was so gentle. Most kids with a couple of dogs wouldn't be as gentle. Great job raising such a happy, well cared for family.

I was wondering how you introduced (and how long it took to do)- Gotcha and Letty to your dogs? Who was there first, the birds or dogs? Can most parrots live with other pets?
Thank you for your videos - for a long time I've wanted to adopt a younger African Grey so I could hand-raise it (though it won't be until I live somewhere where an exotic bird vet is easier to get to, having a 4-hour drive is uncomfortable in the event of an emergency!).. but I won't add to the problem. I can see there's no reason to look for a younger bird when there's so many wonderful birds just like Letty and Gotcha who need homes.

Thanks for the great video! I'd love to know how you potty trained them. My parrots refuse to poop in their cages. They go on their play stands.
How do you get them to not poop on the floor when they are running around? I can tell by body language when they have to go so I pick them up & have them poop on their play stands or a piece of paper towel I always have with me when I am holding/cuddling them. If I don't catch the body language though (look away for a second, ect) they have no problem pooping on the floor, lol. My grey announces she pooped whenever this happens! 😂
I'd greatly appreciate any information on how you were able to fully potty train them. ☺

Could you characterize your birds? How are they, what funny thinks do they do, what impresses you about their intelligence and how do they show that they love you ?
