Spice Girls raised me! Miss the 90's!
Me too!!
Oh wow. This is such a trip down memory lane. They were HUUUUGE in the 90s they played them nonstop.
The names were given to be rude by a magazine. To try and diminish them. It did the opposite. Ginger Spice and Sexy Spice are the same. Ginger was original for Geri.
Their nicknames came from a British journalist who was writing an article about them. He didn’t know their names so just came up with the spice names which they took and rolled with it.
They got together after they all saw an advert in a newspaper looking for a girlband.
I worked with a girl who was a good friend of Emma (Baby Spice) who invited her to go to the audition, as she was also a singer and dancer. The way my colleague explained it, Emma had been a keen auditioner without success, so she assumed this would be a similar story and didn't go along to try out. To say she spent a few years kicking herself, is an understatement - sometimes it really does only take that one good audition to get your career going, I guess. Bizarrely, a year or so later, I served Emma when I worked in a London lingerie store! Cos, you know, life and coincidences and all that jazz 🙂
So the writer called the one black member scary? British press, oh well.😅
@@blackblake3658 yes that is the British press for you, she's growling all the way to the bank tho❤🤣👍🏾💕
Called the one with red hair Ginger as well smh
@@yzolakitchi ah interesting. Yea I believe there was a different girl in the original line up but she let when she got some kind of other job. Bet she was gutted.
@@yzolakitchiit wouldn't have been the same audition. Emma didn't attend the auditions. She was brought in after another girl left the group.
Their music was such a mood during my teenage years. Ah, their songs are timeless.
I screamed. This is also my favorite Spice Girls song.
Idk why but Mike calling Mel B "Sexy Spice" made my day haha. She's Sexy Spice in my heart from now on
Geri said she wanted to be called Sexy Spice back then instead of Ginger. Mel B had a typical Mel B reaction to that.
@@XanArt21Which is ironic considering they were the two that were hooking up 😂...
The American sound isn’t actually an American sound - it’s about how you form your vowels, and it’s much easier to sing using those vowel sounds than it is to sing with the vowel sounds made in most British accents.
Giving the side eye to the name Scary Spice is why I love you guys!!
Their nicknames originated from the British music show Top Of The Pops. The show was accompanied by a TOTP music magazine, and the editor at the time coined the names based on what he thought they suited.
Posh was always the one who was well spoken and always wore glam looking clothes. Sporty Spice because she always wore sports wear. Baby because she was the youngest of the bunch. Ginger because.... well....
And Scary because she was outspoken and loud!
And the frizzy hair... and tongue ring (which were rate at the time)
I'm so glad Spice Girls got a week I loved them as a kid. I only learned about them after Geri (Ginger) left the group so I def missed out but I was a huge fan from 98-2001. I even begged my dad to buy their dolls lol. 🤣
Always loved Mel B and growing up she was one of my role models. Her and Brandy were my world in the 90s.
Mike would totally pick Scary Spice nowadays. 😊
My 90s teen heart is happy. I loved Mel B so much.❤❤❤❤
She has gone through so much. I just learned last week about her suicide attempt(S) plural. I hope she gets some peace in her life from now on.
@@DeeDiamond2981 I loved her too. I remember walking through Leeds once in a small town called Burley and remember seeing Mel B running up off the main road and heading towards some houses. I remember thinking "wow, that really is her".
She had on a brightly voloured bomber jacket and some big platform shoes. Turned out it was her sister Danielle who Mel used to pass on her clothes to!
SPICE GIRLS FOREVER
Victoria Adams (now: Beckham). 😇
Even her name was a cliche posh family name lol.
Just celebrated 25 years married. I follow her on fb
Spice Girls week the same week as my birthday?? Thank you ✨🕺🏾✨
my girls!!! The spice girls was LOVED!! from the suburbs to the hood 😂🙌🏾. Yall remember the lollipops?
I never bought them cos I never saw them at a store near me but I bought the dolls. I got Mel B and Victoria dolls.
i still have the stickers!
Joe's "seems a little you know..." sent me lmaoooooo
Yayyy to Spice Girls week!!! I was born in ‘98 and my aunts loved Spice Girls. This song specifically was how I communicated with one of my aunts that I wanted to spend the night at her house.
My aunt introduced me to them (she was a young aunt in college) she literally said do u know the spice girls? I said no. So she drew them as little caricatures and that was my introduction to them before hearing Wannabe. She then played their album. I didn’t get to see their videos for at least a few months. So in a way it was like they came to life from a drawing for me lol.
Highkick Katrina(Mel C) is always singin' her saprano bum off!!!❤🎶🎶🎶
I found this channel now because I loveeeee the spice girls. Thank you for reacting to them. I subbed.
You will love this channel
I was absolutely obsessed with the Spice Girls when i was younger. I had this album on cassette, the Spice Girls movie, the music videos on vhs, and a Scary Spice barbie. I listened to that cassette on repeat.
Spice Gilrs is 90's pure juice. I just love they
9:30 Oh yeah, I too would love to be overpaid. 😂 As a young girl in the 90s, Spice Girls and “girl power” was such a big thing, what a trip down memory lane.
0:42 Earth Wind & Fire sample from their song, Saturday Nite.
My favorite Spice Girls song! Yes! 💖
This is probably my favorite song from them. I also love Spice up your life but more for the video than the song itself. Back in the days my favorite was Posh but now I think is Emma, the baby spice.
Spice up ya life video is underrated!!!
A spice girls week?! Omg please do “too much” by them
The list already has chosen songs from a subscriber that won for their list to be looked at for the week. There are weekly voting on whose list they should react to. If you want them to use your list it's either you get the most votes, win on a live or you pay
This song was MY JAM when I was a kid!!!
one of the best pop songs to this date. it literally takes me back to my childhood.
David Beckham saw this video in a pub, and said that he was going to marry the one in the black catsuit. David and Victoria just celebrated 25 years of marriage this month! Posh n Becks❤Viva Forever!❤
Not in a pub , in hotel room in Georgia.
This is was IT back in '96. I remember it like it was yesterday. Good times.
You should check out the Spice World movie as a special reaction 😆 it was the best thing ever!
YES PLEASE!!!! I would pay for that!!!!
This is a MUST
Awwhh yess I'm so happy we getting a Spice Girls week! 🔥
It's probs way too late and you'll never see this, but in regards to the nicknames, there was a pop magazine in the UK that used to give nicknames to the artists they interviewed, and the journalist who interviewed them in late 1996/early 1997 gave them the nicknames based on the experience. Mel B was very loud and sat on his lap during the interview and joked "You're scared of me, aren't you?", hence she got the name 'Scary Spice'. Ginger was originally going to be 'Saucy' Spice because she was very flirty in the interview, but he changed it last minute.
So like most things with the Spice Girls, it was all accidental and kind of serendipitous.
omg so excited for this week! cant wait for the rest of this week!!
Chris de Burgh ( Lady in Red) sounds soooo British when he sings the word ‘ Dance ‘
One thing that made them stick out to other group artists is they wrote all their own lyrics.
This would have been my number 1 so can’t wait to see where this goes
I can't wait for the rest of the week.
Omgggg my childhood 😍😍😍😍 Scary Spice was my spirit animal #GirlPower they also came out before Austin Powers
This is my favorite week by far! Amazing!
American accent? They have a very British accent even in this song. Also you should listen to their albums and interviews, they all sound really British!
SPICE GIRLS MOVIE THUMBS UP 👍
Pleaseeeee
Can we get a real fan on your show to help you understand the history? Happy to educate you. This is a great series! Xoxo
“Ginger Spice” was not the laziest nickname, was actually the smartest cuz she was Ginger/Redhead and “ginger” is actually a spice/herb.
Never been a huge dedicated Spice girls fan, but I like most of their music, and I had Melanie Cs first two solo albums, cause she is my favorite if I have to pick. The first Spice girls related songs I heard was Wannabe and Melanie Cs duet with Bryan Adams.
I love those 2 albums. Her voice was so beautiful on those songs. I think she even hit whistle notes on Closer.
The first of your non-ESC weeks I have to watch! Love this song.
screamed when i seen this, my fav spice girl song
Ommgggg best week ever!
We def need spice girls week 2. Some other good songs they got, Like Mama, Too Much, Goodbye, Holla, Headlines, Spice up your life
"2 Become 1", reaction please!!!!!!!🤩🤩🤩
YES!!!!!FINALLY!!!!!!!🎊 🎉‼️🎊🥰🥰
I don’t know if it’s my list or not but I did have “Say you’ll be there” as #5. I’ll know tomorrow if this is my list depending on the song.
The origins of their nicknames came from a small British magazine that named them in a cheeky sort of way shortly after their 1st 2 singles premiered. The Spice Girls took what was meant to be a lazy dig and RAN with it. Basically took the power back like true “Girl Power!”
So scary MAY have been a bit of a 90s dig at the only black woman in the group but Mel B took that and made it her own.
“Scary” is because of how wild and loud and openly honest she was. That can scare some men and intimate them how brazen her personality was. Then add her big in your face hair along with it which was amazing for us black folks back then because she wasn’t afraid to wear her natural fro instead of wigs and lace fronts.
“Ginger” is the easiest to understand because of red but she was also known as “SEXY” spice. Because of her big boobs, hot pants, and I guess red is the sexiest color, she played the most vixen type role visually.
“Baby” was every little boy and girls favorite and is genius because it’s the easiest to promote to their main fanbase of 4-12 year olds. She’s a Barbie doll. She’s blonde blue eyed and innocent with mini dresses and platforms. She was also the youngest member and acted like it personality wise.
You have to understand the Spice Girls is pure CAMP in the most extremely purposeful way. They knew what they were doing and they did it well.
Def Geri being Sexy Spice and Emma being Barbie Spice.
An impressive amount of time spent analysing the meaning of the individual Spice names.
Been from the north of England the fact that you picked up on us saying c*unt as opposed to couldn't is crazy. I feel seen lol
the nicknames were actually given to them by a magazine article about them early in their career - and the group just decided to adopt the names
I mean they were everything as a kid lol. This brings back so many memories. Great idea to react to them!
Thank you for this! I am so happy!
I was wondering about the nicknames also a while ago, but Melanie C said in an interview with Mayim Bialik that in the UK the ginger people are heabily bullied, so someone like Geri, who was very in-your-face, was like "power to the gingers" and that meant something huge for them over there. So, while not a personality, the nickname had some deeper meaning anyway.
Still the biggest selling girl group in the world. I love them
Im Sporty Spice.
Sporty spice had the best vocals
Did she ?
I thought so in every song she hit the high notes
Couldn't agree more
❤Vibes Vibes Vibes ❤
Living my best 🌈 life in 1st grade when this came out 😆
Victoria Adams-posh
Geri haliwell-ginger
Melanie brown-scary
Emma bunton-baby
Melanie chisom-sporty
Sporty had the most solo success.
Please do mel c i turn to you or never be the same again ft lisa left eye lopez.
13:08 Victoria's previous last name was Adams
I love Spice Girls❤ they were huge in Poland.
best song by far
Amazing song
Y’all need to do Naked by the Spice Girls!
YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
The actor in the video is Tony Ward.. who gained fame as Madonna's boyfriend who also starred in Justify My Love , Erotica and Cherish.
also as a major model through the 80's, 90's and early 2000s
Mike and joe who is your favorite spice girl
Had the biggest crush on baby spice
I don't think they're putting on accents paticularly. Maybe a bit on some of the vowel sounds.
Scary I heard a bit of her accent here❤
But ginger is the only one that actually is a spice.
Lol
I wanna dedicate this song for you guys
Emma Bunton - WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG
Take that next
Spiceeeee Girllssss!
Originally there was a rap part in this song as well... but it was ditched before it was recorded. They did the rap during the 'Mama' videoshoot (behind the scenes). Instead they went for the harmonica part.
Judd Lander who did the harmonica also did the harmonica on Karma Chameleon (Culture Club).
It is Scary Spice because Mel B is very intense and loud. She loves the name.
Baby is the youngest, a real mama's girl, so yeah...
Sporty is still a very healthy and sporty woman. She DJ's and has the most solo albums.
Ginger is a fake, her hair I mean 😂... she is more alburn than red.
Posh is just very posh, but actually has a pretty naughty dry sense of humor.
Extreme naughty dry sense of humor Mariah Carey is the same way. The both actually crack jokes a ton, but with serious faces lol😂
@@TheArtofBeingReactsloveee that!!
Iconic video 😍 SPICE GIRLS FOREVER
God the 90s was golden
Grade school memories
If you wanna see another good girl group, you should take a look at the german band "No Angels". 👍 They also made many good songs. It's actually worth listening to (I think you're gonna like some songs).
The guy was one of madonna's long time boyfriends and was in a few of her videos as well.
At school in my class we had a thing where you could bring in a vhs for downtime and everyone had to watch it. My friend would tape this from tv and bring it in. Every. single. week. If I was able to tape from tv and bring one in, it'd be a fucking guns n roses song LMAO. I loved Spice Girls but at that time they were tiring on the 'girl power'.
They got their names from a lazy journalist who couldn't be bothered to remember them. He just gave them those nicknames, and they decided to own it and take back those names.
my second favourite spice girls video. great though
Their Spice names were given by a lazy reporter who couldn't be bothered to remember their names for a teen pop magazine. He just came up with their names based on their appearance, but then later the names came to be their personas.
The Spice Girls came to be by answering an ad for a girl group, they were stifled by their management, took some industry contacts, ran away and started pitching themselves as Spice to execs until Simon Fuller signed them on. In the industry they were known as "those spice girls" and the name "spice girls" stuck.
Omg my childhood spice girls are huge still… they can do stadiums if they want they broke the all time records on their last stadium tour in the uk. Vegas is offering the biggest contract ever to do a residency there or tour
Ginger was more of the Leading Lady in the clique and spokeswoman of the five piece. She inspired a lot of confidence and femininity on all their behalfs
Ginger's ambition made the group successful, she had the idea of leaving their first manager and ger a new one and also contracts.
❤spice
I think you mixed up what you said about Rihanna's Bajan accent. In the beginning she actually spoke in that accent but later on she used it less and less and spoke with an American one as she became more famous. If you gear her dnow and don't know where ahe is from you won't know she's a Bajan.
It’s not an American accent, it’s singing with open vowels. If you have signing lessons it’s what you’re taught to do. Vowels in an English speaking accent are closed and it’s harder to sing with any power like that. It just happens to sound closer to an American speaking voice (which has open vowels) than an English one. You can definitely hear their own accents here too though.
Sorry what American accent?! All British thank you very much!!
I think Mike might've been confusing The Spice Girls with TLC? No Sexy Spice, but they had the CrazySexyCool album that played off their personalities.
A one off of Chappell Roan, "Good Luck Babe" would make you guys (me) happy! It's Bad Romance X with Kate Bush. Sonically irresistible. And *she* can SING.
Nice break from the spice girlies.
No Chappell deserves a full week not a one off.
My girls ❤
Yea I’ve always felt there was something, let’s say “off”, about Scary Spice’s name. Baby Spice’s name too. Those two names never set right with me, but for two different reasons. Nice to see two men call out the name baby spice. Nice to see two wm call out the name scary spice. ♥️
That’s funny cos as a Brit I don’t hear the American accent at all! Interesting!
I think it's because I'm British but I can easily pick up their native inflections when they sing. Remember that they all come from different parts of the country. Geri in particular struggles to sound authentically non British but largely because she's one of the weaker vocalists in the group (Posh being the other).
Bring SpiceGirls back
