A cage is a metaphor for what contains a person and their unique personality in such a way that it makes them feel physical, emotionally, and/or intellectually stunted. This metaphorical cage can be a known entity. Or they can be unknown, such as you were raised in a racist environment, and because of your unknowingly hostile views of different people, you are unable to attain the jobs that you seek. Whether it is a cage a person creates for themselves (i.e. I should be smarter, more accomplished, richer, thinner, braver) or a cage constructed by someone else (i.e. your family’s ideas, your religion’s ideas, your culture’s ideas) cages create hostile inner environments.
