I live in south wales in the uk and I leave my mountain minnows out year round in my turtle pond. I use them to eat the mosquito larvae. We get pretty cold winters here, we have prolonger periods of below freezing and at one point I had 2 inches of ice on the pond. They survived just fine!!
A large in-ground pond would still probably have water near 40 degrees at the bottom even when there is ice on top. Your pond is above ground, uninsulated and not very large. If you leave the white cloud mountain minnows out in the winter and the water temp drops below 41 then they may die. I have a similar pond to yours and I'm in NC. My minnows went into torpor and weren't doing well so I added a submersible aquarium heater. If you want minnows that can survive down to 33 degrees try rosy reds or mosquito fish.
@@carlosio hi mate. My pond is 6.5ft x 4ft. The deepest part is only about 2ft deep but most of it is about 8 inches deep. They have been out for 2 winters and the minnows are still going strong and look fat and happy

You could add a sponge filter-- they are super cheap and connect to your air pump hosing. No electricity needed. I have one in my whiskey barrel pond and it keeps my pond nice and clear. Also gives a place for good bacteria to grow.
I've actually just set up my outdoors tub. Gonna let mine run a couple weeks before adding my fish. I'm putting cherry barbs in mine. I have a floating planter in mine. Blood dock and creeping jenny.
Like Heath, I am in New Zealand and my WCMMs are outside all year round. Temperature occasionally slips below 30F at night mid-winter but they don't seem to mind it at all.
@@AquariumPlantLab I think the secret is to make sure the water is deep enough for the fish to stay well below any surface icing. You should be at least able to elongate the time they spend outdoors, i'e into autumn/fall.

A bit of hessian or shade cloth around the edge, could add some creepy jenny plant. would droop over the edge, hide the air hose and just make it look a tad more natural. :)
i am also this year going to do my first one i will be breeding bristlenose pleco and white clouds with a solar powered air pump in a 50 gallon tub i am really excited since i will also be building my own greenhouse out of bamboo
I'm trying a 20 long outside under an overhang with whiteclouds for the first time this year. Maybe will get 3 hrs of sunlight. It's finally just getting warm enough here in Wisconsin so should be able to add soon! Golden or regular whiteclouds? Nice vid enjoyed it!

Up here in the nw theres a lot of dragon flies. Have you had any issues with them? I was thinking of a white cloud minnow and ghost shrimp pond but heard dragon flies will eat them both.
Haha great question! I bet the frog would eat anything it can fit in it’s mouth! Most of those fish were slightly too large for the frog. No need to worry though, the fish are inside in an aquarium now, this setup is no longer running :)
Two things. There’s a roof above the pond so rain doesn’t get in. But I also drilled a small hole about 1 inch from the top of the tub. This acts as a maximum water level meter for when I do water changes. 😊
I only change the water a couple times a season actually. But I constantly remove duckweed. The duckweed acts as a waste sponge, so as long as you remove duckweed regularly you don’t need to do as many water changes :)

I'm in Swansea. Started a large half wine barrel pond for Japanese rice fish and white cloud mountain minnows. Any advice would be gratefully received

i think maybe this year you should try and breed bristlenose plecos 1 pair of those and then a group of ricefish

Ive never been too picky with food, I use flake food and I typically try new foods when I run out 👍
