It’s already been a long week. And (like many of you!) I can get exhausted.
Burnout is a real issue across professions…
and the medical world is no exception!
But Dr. Glaucomflecken has a way of bringing awareness to serious topics in a light-hearted way!
Today, I’m reacting to a video that’s both hilarious and heartbreaking. They say you sometimes have to laugh to keep from crying. Well, I definitely don’t want you to cry - but let’s laugh together and bring awareness to burnout!

It's worse in Canada with a health care system that hasn't increased capacity since the late 80s or early 90s. Every hospital is at 100% capacity everyday.

100% is an understatement, the hospital here runs at least 110% capacity at all times, it went down to 89% during the lockdowns. that being said, this isn't a contest

In my pediatric specialty training, we worked 110 hours a week. It was the 80’s. Somewhere along the line I got married and had a baby. I remember “sleeping” in a chair in the NICU caring for a baby with a significant deformity. The dad passed out in delivery room because they didn’t know ahead of time. US were not routine then and all I could think of was I’m nearly at term and I hadn’t had an ultrasound. Eventually I did because I went 2 weeks past my due date. I worked until I went into labor because I only had 4 weeks maternity leave. 💕🐝💕

Many a 3rd year student nurse including myself were burnt out when we had shift work & non paid overtime with most shifts. I had to wake up an intern reluctantly when he was curled up in the Staff room lying on a bunch of semi hard chairs. He was so tired. He stayed on the Medical Ward because there wasn’t any point leaving it was so hectic. Poor guy.🇦🇺

Ironic isn't it, Drs are limited to 80 hours a week, but when I was an Over the Road Truck Driver (1970s) , I was limited to 60 hours in 7 days ( or 70 hours in 8 days) with a maximum of 10 hours on duty, then a required 8 hours off duty. Current rules are same number of hours per week, but you can reset the clock by taking 34 continuous hours off duty. Otherwise, 11 hours driving (with a 30 minute required break, and 14 hours on duty, then you have to take 10 hours off duty (to try and line up with a 24 hour period to try to align with circadian rhythms) Interesting that we have all these rules for drivers, but not the medical fields which to me seem just as important if not more important to have such rules. Anyway, try to stay safe and healthy.

I quit / retired recently after 39 years in health service . I think I may have been a bit “over it all” . As I’m not old enough for retirement ( as the age has been increased here) and I needed $ I’ve had to get another job. And guess what! I went back to health but in a completely diff area to my profession - but only part time. Don’t know how long I will keep at it tho’ ❤

39 years of work not providing at least a minimum sustainable retirement is actually horrifying.

This is ridiculous! Everyone suffers job burnout, I know I did. Too bad the medical profession doesn't acknowledge it. I know I sure as heck wouldn't want a surgeon operating on me at the tail end of his 80 hour work week.

These places need a LOT more workers so they can split up the shifts therefor making them shorter and giving people a lot more opportunities to have rest days, ect.

It's unfortunate that many people experience burnout in our society. It's crucial to prioritize self-care and seek support when needed to combat the effects of burnout. You're not alone in feeling this way, and it's essential to take steps to address burnout and its underlying causes.

In the middle are frustrated (angry) patients with complex diagnoses shuffled from doctor to doctor, creating enormous medical bills.

While I've never had the level of burnout like you and other medical professionals have experienced, I remember earlier this year experiencing emotional burnout.
Most of the time I have energy to see Family and I even look forward to seeing them. Especially when they are members out of town.
But I felt like I literally had to push myself just to get dressed and ready to go to the Family get-together.
Luckily once I was there I gained some energy (plus food helped 😉) and there were members of the Family who were from out of town, whom I rarely see.
Had it not been for Family members from out of town, I probably wouldn't have made such an effort.
And weirdly enough, it happened at least 2 days in a row. I think I was overwhelmed by something else at the time, hense this experience.

My mom is a 25+ year ER Physician. She’s like a candle burned at both ends plus the middle. I told her I’m grateful now she stirred me away from becoming a physician back in the day.

Yes, health care is a horrid mess today. What's needed is solutions and nobody seems to be doing anything to change anything. The average person/patient has no way to effect change. Medical people are better positioned to create change. The greatest obstacle is politics and government. The foundational problem is insurance and corporate ownership. We can complain for another decade or two or we can do something if we only knew what to do. Stop complaining and do something! Tell us what we can do. Make something happen! At age 74 I will be dead and gone before anything gets better even if there is a solution. Find a way for the sake of all medical people and for all patients. Do it now! Find a way!
